Leggett-Garg inequality violation under non-Markovian noise

Abstract

We study the violations of Leggett-Garg (LG) inequality in a qubit subjected to non-Markovian noisy channels such as Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Noise (OUN). Quite generally, the state-independence of the violation in the noiseless case is preserved under the application of noise. Within a given family of noisy channels (in specific, RTN or OUN), we find an enhancement in the violation in the non-Markovian case as compared to the Markovian case. We thus find that non-Markovianity provides a stronger demonstration of quantumness of the system.

Canonical Leggett-Garg inequality: Nonclassicality of temporal quantum correlations under energy constraint

Titas Chanda, Tamoghna Das, Shiladitya Mal +2 more

Nonclassicality of temporal correlations pertaining to noncommutative sequential measurements is defined through the violation of macrorealistic inequalities, known as Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGI). We investigate the energy cost of the process associated with the Leggett-Garg test in the context of noiseless and Markovian noise for arbitrary initial states. We prove that in noiseless and in certain noisy scenarios, the maximal violations of LGI under the energy constraint occurs when the average energy of the process is equal to the negative of the energy of the initial state. Such a dependence of LGI on the choice of the initial state is not seen in the unconstrained case. Moreover, we find that in the presence of a moderate amount of Markovian noise, the amount of violation of LGI remains almost unaltered with a suitable choice of the evolution and dephasing operators in the neighborhood of the maximal violation line, thereby showing the robustness of temporal correlations under environmental effects.

Enhanced quantumness via non-Markovianity

Haiping Li, Jian Zou, Bin Shao

In this paper we address the issue of the interplay between non-Markovianity and nonclassicality of a system. We consider the action of non-Markovian environments on a qubit in terms of two models, a classical noise model and a quantum microscopic collision model. For both models we use the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) as a criterion of quantumness, and use the conditional past-future (CPF) correlation to measure non-Markovianity. Besides for the collision model, we also use violation of the nondiscord generating and detecting (NDGD) dynamics to indicate the nonclassicality. And LGI, NDGD, and CPF are probed sequentially by three projective measurements of some observable. In this paper we do not use the assumption of the quantum regression theorem and especially for the collision model the measurement backaction on the environment is explicitly considered. We find that compared with the Markovian dynamics the LGI can be violated for a longer time interval, i.e., non-Markovianity can preserve the quantumness of the system. For the collision model we find that for a specific measurement process, although the non-Markovianity cannot be detected, the effect of non-Markovianity of the system dynamics on nonclassicality still exists, and for some specific measurement operator the violation of both LGI and NDGD will never occur for the Markovian dynamics while with the enhancement of non-Markovianity the quantumness can appear. We also find that the NDGD can be violated for a much wider parameter regime than the LGI.

Probing nonclassicality under dissipation

Md. Manirul Ali, Po‐Wen Chen

Abstract We investigate the nonclassicality of an open quantum system using Leggett–Garg inequalities (LGI) which test the correlations of a single system measured at different times. Violation of LGI implies nonclassical behavior of the open system. We investigate the violation of the Leggett–Garg inequality for a two level system (qubit) spontaneously decaying under a general non-Markovian dissipative environment. A robust nonclassical behavior is shown through the violation of LGI in the non-Markovian regime of the environment. Our results are exact as we have evaluated the two-time correlation functions exactly without using quantum regression theorem. We probe quantum signatures of the open system through the exact dynamics of Leggett–Garg inequalities for a wide range of system-environment parameters beyond Born–Markov regime.

Effect of random telegraph noise on entanglement and nonlocality of a qubit-qutrit system

Hakimeh Jaghouri, Samira Nazifkar

We study the evolution of entanglement and nonlocality of a non-interacting qubit-qutrit system under the effect of random telegraph noise (RTN) in independent and common environments in Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. We investigate the dynamics of qubit-qutrit system for different initial states. These systems could be existed in far astronomical objects. A monotone decay of the nonlocality (entanglement) is found in the Markov regime, while for non-Markovian noise, phenomena of sudden change (death) and revival occurs. We find that the preserving nonlocality (entanglement) depends on initial state of the system in common and independent environments; so, we can not strictly conclude that independent or common environments are more robust against the noise.

Quantum violations of L u ¨ ders bound Leggett–Garg inequalities for non-unitary quantum channel

Asmita Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract Leggett Garg inequalities (LGIs) provides an elegant way for probing the incompatibility between the notion of macrorealism and quantum mechanics. For unitary dynamics the optimal quantum violation of a LGI is constrained by the L u ¨ ders bound. In this paper, we have studied two formulations of LGIs in three-time LG scenario, viz, the standard LGIs and third-order LGIs both for unbiased and biased measurement settings. We show that if system evolves under non-unitary quantum channel between two measurements, the quantum violations of both forms of LGIs exceed their respective L u ¨ ders bounds and can even reach their algebraic maximum in sharp measurement settings. We found that when the measurement is unsharp the quantum violations of both standard and third-order LGIs for non-unitary quantum channel can be obtained for lower value of the unsharpness parameter compared to the unitary dynamics. We critically examined the violation of L u ¨ ders bound of LGIs and its relation to the violation of various no-signaling in time conditions, another formalism for testing macrorealism. It is shown that mere violations of no-signaling conditions are not enough to warrant the violation of standard LGIs, an interplay between the violations of various NSIT condition along with a threshold value play an important role. On the other hand violation of third-order LGI is obtained when the degree of violation of a specific no-signaling in time condition reaches a different threshold value.
