Abstract

One recipe for mathematically formulating a relativistic quantum mechanical scattering theory utilizes a two-Hilbert space approach, denoted by $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{0}$, upon each of which a unitary representation of the Poincaré Lie group is given. Physically speaking, $\mathcal{H}$ models a complicated interacting system of particles one wishes to understand, and $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ an associated simpler (i.e., free/noninteracting) structure one uses to construct 'asymptotic boundary conditions" on so-called scattering states in $\mathcal{H}$. Simply put, $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ is an attempted idealization of $\mathcal{H}$ one hopes to realize in the large time limits $t\rightarrow\pm\infty$. The above considerations lead to the study of the existence of strong limits of operators of the form $e^{iHt}Je^{-iH_{0}t}$, where $H$ and $H_{0}$ are self-adjoint generators of the time translation subgroup of the unitary representations of the Poincaré group on $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{0}$, and $J$ is a contrived mapping from $\mathcal{H}_{0}$ into $\mathcal{H}$ that provides the internal structure of the scattering asymptotes. The existence of said limits in the context of Euclidean quantum theories (satisfying precepts known as the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms) depends on the choice of $J$ and leads to a marvelous connection between this formalism and a beautiful area of classical mathematical analysis known as the Stieltjes moment problem, which concerns the relationship between numerical sequences $\{\mu_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ and the existence/uniqueness of measures $\alpha(x)$ on the half-line satisfying \begin{equation*} \mu_{n}=\int_{0}^{\infty}x^{n}d\alpha(x). \end{equation*}

The Quantum-Mechanical Scattering Problem

Thomas F. Jordan

The purpose of this paper is threefold: to provide a mathematically rigorous formulation of the quantum-mechanical scattering problem from the time-independent point of view as has been done by Jauch from the time-dependent point of view, to establish a union between the two formulations, and to investigate the necessity of the asymptotic condition which occurs as a postulate in the time-dependent formulation. The formulation of the problem depends only on the ``total'' and ``free'' Hamiltonian operators. Under the conditions necessary for the time-dependent formulation, the wave operators defined by the asymptotic limits provide a unique solution of this problem. The possibility that solutions can exist when the asymptotic conditions are not valid is investigated by defining wave operators by an integral representation. The conditions sufficient for these to provide a unique solution are shown to be possibly weaker than the asymptotic conditions; there may be a class of Hamiltonian operators for which such solutions exist but for which the asymptotic limits do not. An explicit characterization of such a set of Hamiltonian operators is not achieved, but this question of the necessity of the asymptotic condition has been reduced to a specific mathematical problem. It is hoped that this paper will find a reader who is able to carry the mathematical investigation further.

Quantum Mechanics as the Unique Lorentzian Continuation of an Osterwalder--Schrader Positive Theory

Chast K. Wolfe

This record contains the manuscript Quantum Mechanics as the Unique Lorentzian Continuation of an Osterwalder–Schrader Positive Theory by Chast K. Wolfe. The paper proves that the full mathematical structure of quantum mechanics—complex Hilbert space, linear and unitary time evolution, the Born rule, canonical (anti-)commutation relations, Poincaré invariance, the spin–statistics correspondence, and the existence of a unique vacuum—arises uniquely from the standard Osterwalder–Schrader (OS) axioms: reflection positivity, Euclidean covariance, locality, regularity, and the Markov semigroup property. Starting from a reflection-positive Euclidean field theory, the work establishes a monotone chain of implications showing that OS positivity forces:(1) a unique complex structure on the reconstructed Hilbert space,(2) linear unitary Lorentzian time evolution generated by a self-adjoint Hamiltonian,(3) the Born rule via Gleason’s theorem,(4) CCR/CAR relations in the Gaussian case, and(5) full OS → Wightman reconstruction, including Poincaré covariance, TCP analyticity, spin–statistics, and vacuum uniqueness. The paper also proves that nonlinear, real, or quaternionic variants of quantum theory are incompatible with OS positivity together with Euclidean covariance and locality. Thus, within the class of OS-positive models, standard complex quantum mechanics is the unique Lorentzian continuation. Quantum Field Theory of Particles with Braid Group Statistics in 2+1 Dimenions

Jens Mund

The present thesis is concerned with the local quantum physics of relativistic particles and fields in three space-time dimensions, whose statistics is to be described by a representation of the braid group -- so-called plektons or, if the representation is Abelian, anyons. In particular the issue of the existence of free anyonic fields is addressed. In our context, these are operators affiliated with the `local´ field algebras and creating only single particle vectors from the vacuum. (Localizability here refers to regions extending to infinity in some spacelike direction.) Under a mild regularity condition for these fields, we can derive commutation relations which are not compatible with braid group statistics. Further, model-independent results concerning the PCT operator and the connection of spin and statistics are obtained. Assuming the observable algebra to satisfy the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, a PCT theorem for plektons is derived. For anyons it is shown that the Bisognano-Wichmann property of the observable algebra lifts, in a `twisted´ version, to the field algebra. In particular, the PCT-operator coincides, up to a `twist operator´, with the modular conjugation of the field algebra associated to a standard wedge region. From this fact, the spin-statistics theorem for anyons is derived. The structure of the Hilbert space of scattering states of plektons and anyons is further clarified. It is known to be fixed by the relevant representations of the braid group and by the rules which determine the charges contained in the scattering states (the `fusion´ rules). We present Møller operators W+ and W- from the spaces of outgoing and incoming scattering states into a reference Hilbert space, which translate the physical ray representation of the Poincaré group on the spaces of scattering states into a canonical ray representation on the reference Hilbert space. A new result concerns the `incoming free PCT operator´, i.e. the product of the PCT operator with the S-matrix S = ( W+)* W- : It is exhibited how this model-independent operator acts in the reference Hilbert space. In the case of anyons, the fusion rules are trivial and the relevant representations of the braid group are classified by a finite set of complex numbers, namely the statistics parameters of the particles under consideration. Hence in the anyonic case the above results yield explicit formulae for the ray representation of the Poincaré group and for the incoming free PCT-operator. In view of the Bisognano-Wichmann property, we have thereby constructed the product of the Tomita operator associated to any given wedge region with the S-matrix, i.e. the `incoming free´ Tomita-operator of the anyonic field algebra.
