Size of photons and the idea of coherence

Abstract

Ever since behavior of photons were explained in terms of the matter-wave duality, mystery about the size of such a photon as it behaves like a particle has never slipped out from the scientific discussions. It is normally believed that the size of the photons is of the order of the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave. This paper addresses this scientific concern and attempts at opening the issue up for discussion after making a completely theoretical but consistent proposition. The argument presented here borrows the idea from the way particles have been conceptualized in quantum mechanics. In quantum mechanics it is argued that a particle gets represented not by a single wave but a group of waves in a way that the group velocity of such a group of waves exactly gives the velocity of the particle. Based on the same argument it is explained how the coherence length instead of the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave, must estimate the linear dimension of a photon. In the end, the discussion on the size of a photon in view of the special theory of relativity is also initiated in this paper.

THE CLASSICAL STRUCTURE MODEL OF SINGLE PHOTON AND CLASSICAL POINT OF VIEW WITH REGARD TO WAVE-PARTICLE DUALITY OF PHOTON

Dong-Lin Zu

The enigma of the wave-particle duality of photon has remained unimpressively explained for a century since Einstein presents the concept of the photon in 1905. This article establishes a classical geometric structure model of a single photon based on fleld matter, educes a formula for the size of a photon; assumes that there only are two kinds of photon of right hand and left hand circular polarized, and suggests the frequency ! of photon polarization rotated to be its spin frequency. It ascribes the wavelike of photon to its spin motion and the particle-like to its translation motion. From the point of photon particle instead of wave view to re-analyze Young's double-slit interference and polarizer experiments, gives reasonable mechanism. It deflnes the phase velocity and the group velocity of a photon. It gives a unifled and consistent understanding of quantum particle of light and classical electromagnetic waves fleld. Evidently, such a precisely deflned conceptual model is reasonable, objective and easy to accept for classical physicists. The puzzle (1) of the wave-particle duality of light has remained unsatisfactorily explained nearly a century since Albert Einstein flrst proposed the photon, the quantum unit of light ‡ E=~!; ~=~ ~ ·

The expression E = h × f is misleading because it implies the distribution of a photon quantum over 299 792 458 m, while the expression E = (h × c)/λ enables us to explain the particle-wave duality

Reiner Georg Ziefle

The two equations E = h × f and E = (h × c)/λ for the quantum of energy of electromagnetic radiation provide the same result but describe electromagnetic radiation very differently. E = (h × c)/λ describes the quantum of energy of electromagnetic radiation to be located already in one wavelength and therefore like a particle. E = h × f describes the quantum of energy distributed over 299 792 458 m and therefore like a wave. To obtain h × f for the quantum of energy, we have to refer the quantum of energy to 299 792 458 m. Only then we obtain from E = (h × c)/(299 792 458 m), as the distance of 299 792 458 m of the velocity c is cancelling out now, E = h × 1/s = h × Hz, which is the precondition to obtain the correct value for the quantum of energy by multiplying Planck’s constant h by the frequency f. This already indicates the necessity of today's physics to have to speak of a particle-wave duality. It turns out that electromagnetic radiation consists of the first wavelength that carries the quantum of energy and behaves like a particle, which today is called “photon,” and a few following wavelengths that do not carry a further quantum of energy and behave like a wave, which today is called “electromagnetic wave.” By this knowledge, the particle-wave duality vanishes, and we obtain one single physical phenomenon, which I call “photon-wave.” The strange behavior of quantum objects at a single slit, at double-slits, and at beam splitters can now be understood in a causal way. “God does not play dice!” Einstein was right.

Discussion on the Particle-Wave Duality and the Wave Velocity Problem

Huang Zhi-xu

The velocity is a macroscopic concept. The question what is the meaning of velocity in Quantum Mechanics( QM) ,this problem itself is inno answersituation. In the semi-classical theory, for the reconstruction of the velocity definition,we have v→= ▽S / m[m is the particle's mass and ψ = Aexp( j S /h) ]. This method builds the relation of velocity and wave function, but it is not the necessary and useful concept of wave's speed. The velocity of light in vacuum is a common basic constant of physics, however QM also need this parameter obviously,i. e. the new wave mechanics is on need of this physical quantity. The process and result of people's practice show that, scientist has intended to bring forth in the measurement of c with very high accuracy does stand out,if he used the scalar equation c = fλ. Modern physics maintain that the wave velocities( phase velocityvp、group velocity vg) are scalars, not vectors. The wave has its special scientific features; the regular pattern is different from the Classical Mechanics( CM). It needs supports of the QM,but it is not identical with the serious QM. Now,it has not only a theory that can explain the wave problems perfectly,so it is support by the classical physics and quantum physics. The quantization process of EM fields explains the particle-wave duality mathematically. Post quantization, from the EM fields we obtained the photons. But scientist still is puzzled by a difficult question:what is photon. As the common knowledge, the matter waves of photon still a paradox in physics. In addition, the electronic probability waves corresponding the Schrdinger equation, but people says the photonic probability waves have not that wave equation. In other words, the physical meanings of matter wave's phase velocity are not clear, and why the phase velocity of de Broglie waves is faster-than-light,many explanations will be needed. Many instances similar to these examples make the particle-wave duality still the magic ghost in modern physics. Finally, the study on negative wave velocity( NWV) in recent years has a great deal of experience on wave sciences, and bring the new chance on theoretical thinking.

Natural Philosophy of Photons: On the Nature of Electromagnetic Waves

X. L. Li

This paper explores the nature of the photon through the double-slit thought experiment, demonstrating that it is not a wave-particle duality. The essence of the photon is that of a pure particle. The double-slit thought experiment concerning photons is pivotal in proving that photons, along with other particles such as electrons, atoms, and macromolecules, are purely particulate in nature. Between the double-slit partition and the screen, photons do not produce coherence or the superposition of probability wave functions. Instead, they generate alternating bright and dark fringes through repeated oscillations between the slits and the detection screen. Within space, photons can interfere with each other's paths based on their momentum, simultaneously altering their trajectories and even their velocities. Thus, a beam of photons possessing greater momentum may carry along a portion of lower-momentum photons, propagating them over considerable distances. By examining the wavelength of electromagnetic waves, the intrinsic relationship between electromagnetic waves and photons is revealed. This establishes that electromagnetic waves are fundamentally pure particle-wave phenomena of photons. The wavelength of an electromagnetic wave essentially represents the spatial distance between consecutive photons as they advance in formation through space. The longer the wavelength of an electromagnetic wave, the greater the distance between successive photons, causing them to diverge more widely in space, as seen with radio waves. Conversely, shorter wavelengths result in closer spacing between photons, leading to more concentrated emission and a pronounced directionality, exemplified by gamma rays. Within the visible spectrum of electromagnetic waves, humans can occasionally transmit information bearing specific content via photons. This information, conveyed through photons, can traverse distances ranging from metres to thousands of kilometres, where it is received and discerned by another individual.

What Is a Photon

R. Loudon

The concept of the photon is introduced by discussion of the process of electromagnetic field quantization within a closed cavity or in an open optical system. The nature of a single-photon state is clarified by consideration of its behaviour at an optical beam splitter. The importance of linear superposition or entangled states in the distinctions between quantum-mechanical photon states and classical excitations of the electromagnetic field is emphasized. These concepts and the ideas of wave-particle duality are illustrated by discussions of the effects of single-photon inputs to Brown-Twiss and Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Both the theoretical predictions and the-confirming experimental observations are covered. The defining property of the single photon in terms of its ability to trigger one. and only one, photodetection event is discussed.
