Abstract

We propose a model to manipulate group velocity of a multi-frequency probe light in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium consisting of five-level cascade-type atoms associated with a giant self-Kerr nonlinearity. An analytic expression of group index for the probe light is derived as a function of parameters of the probe and coupling fields, atomic density, and lifetimes of excited atomic states. In the presence of the self-Kerr, both probe and controlling fields can be used as knobs to manipulate the probe light between the subluminal and superluminal propagation modes in three separated frequency regions. The theoretical model agrees with experimental observation, and it is helpful to find the optimized parameters and related applications. Furthermore, by using such a cascade excitation scheme, it could be possible to choose the uppermost excited electronic states having long lifetimes, as Rydberg states, to slow the light down to a few mm/s.

The effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system

Le Van Doai

Abstract We propose an analytical model to study the effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity of probe light in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this scheme, a nonlinearity of the medium is enhanced greatly around in three spectral regions corresponding to transparent windows. As a consequence, such a giant Kerr nonlinearity of the medium changes significantly group index for probe light which can obstruct light slowdown. Moreover, this model shows also that the probe propagation can switch between subluminal and superluminal modes in three EIT windows by adjusting the parameters of the signal and coupling fields. Such analytical model is not only convenient for considering the influence of laser parameters on group velocity but is also easy used to fit the experimental results.

Manipulating giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity at multiple frequencies in an atomic gaseous medium

Le Van Doai, Nguyen Le Thuy An, Dinh Xuan Khoa +2 more

We proposed a model for manipulating giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity in an atomic gaseous medium consisting of six-level inverted-Y systems. The absorption, dispersion, and cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficients of the medium are derived as analytical functions of the parameters of probe, coupling, and signal fields. It is shown that the cross-Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced significantly in three transparent windows under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Furthermore, the cross-Kerr nonlinearity can be manipulated between positive and negative values by controlling intensity and/or frequency of the coupling laser. Such controllable giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity with the analytical interpretation is convenient to find experimental parameters and is useful for studying applications of controllable multi-channel quantum phase gates.

Enhancement of self-Kerr nonlinearity via electromagnetically induced transparency in a five-level cascade system: an analytical approach

Dinh Xuan Khoa, Le Van Doai, Doan Hoai Son +1 more

We propose to use a five-level cascade system to enhance self-Kerr nonlinearity under an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) condition. Using density-matrix theory, an expression of the self-Kerr nonlinear coefficient for a weak probe light is derived. Variations of the self-Kerr coefficient with respect to the frequency and intensity of a strong coupling light are investigated. The Kerr nonlinearity is basically modified and enhanced greatly in the spectral regions corresponding to EIT transparent windows. Furthermore, the sign, slope, and magnitude of the self-Kerr coefficient can be controlled with the frequency and intensity of the coupling light. Such a controllable Kerr nonlinearity can find interesting applications in optoelectronic devices working with low light intensity at multiple frequencies.

Fast and slow light propagations in a four-level cascade atomic medium

Nguyen Van Phu, Ho Hai Quang, NGUYEN Thi Ngan +4 more

Under weak probe field, rotating wave and electric dipole approximations, we have derived analytic expressions for absorption and dispersion coefficients, group index and group velocity in a four-level cascade atomic medium interacting with the probe and pump laser fields. The model is applied to 85Rb atomic system to study the control of the fast and slow light propagation of the probe beam according to the intensity and frequency of the pump laser beam. With this excitation model, we find two transparent domains and thus the light group velocity is also controlled at these two frequency domains. In particular, the amplitude and the sign of the group index are easily changed by adjusting the intensity or frequency of the pump laser. That is, the probe beam propagation can be changed between fast and slow light modes by adjusting the intensity or frequency of the pump laser. Our analytical results can be useful for related experimental studies.

Effect of Doppler broadening on giant self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level ladder-type system

Nguyen Huy Bang, Dinh Xuan Khoa, Doan Hoai Son +1 more

In this paper, we propose an analytical model to study the effect of Doppler broadening on self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level ladder-type atomic system. First- and third-order susceptibilities and the self-Kerr nonlinear coefficient are found as the function of temperature and parameters of laser fields. The analytical model is applied to hot $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb and $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms, and it is shown that under the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect, the self-Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced around three transparent spectral regions. When the temperature of atomic vapor increases (i.e., Doppler width increases), the depth and width of the EIT windows decrease accordingly, and therefore the amplitude of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient decreases significantly. In addition, because the frequency gaps between hyperfine levels of upper excited state ${{5\rm D}_{5/2}}$5D5/2 of $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb atoms are much smaller than those of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms, the EIT windows as well as the nonlinear dispersion curves for $^{85}{\rm Rb}$85Rb atoms are closer than those for $^{87}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms as the Doppler effect presents. The analytical results agree well with the experimental observation when reducing to a three-level atomic system. The analytical model can be used to easily fit the experimental observations of self-Kerr nonlinearity in a five-level atomic system under different temperature conditions and apply to a variety of applications relating to all-optical-switching techniques.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Huy Bang, Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
