Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a machine-learning-based detector

Jiawei Li, Ying Guo, Xudong Wang +3 more

The discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (DM-CV-QKD) could break the distance limitation of Gaussian-modulated CV-QKD. In practice, the high-performance error correction code plays an important role in DM-CV-QKD and affects the secure transmission distance. However, DM-CV-QKD usually works under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the design of high-performance error correction code under this condition is difficult, so that it would impose a limitation on further improvement of the secure distance. We propose a DM-CV-QKD with the machine-learning-based detector to further improve the secure distance. The numerical result shows that the proposed scheme could validly improve the system performance. Viewed from another perspective, the proposed scheme could be employed to overcome various impairments induced by the channel and thereby lower the demand of error correction codes on the SNR threshold of the quantum channel without compromising the system performance. The proposed scheme opens the door to applying machine leaning to directly process the raw secret key and improve the performance for CV-QKD systems.

Multi-label learning for improving discretely-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Qin Liao, Gang Xiao, Hai Zhong +1 more

Abstract We propose a novel scheme for discretely-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) using machine learning technologies, which called multi-label learning-based CVQKD (ML-CVQKD). In particular, the proposed scheme divides the whole quantum system into state learning process and state prediction process. The former is used for training and estimating classifier, and the latter is used for generating final secret key. Meanwhile, a multi-label classification algorithm (MLCA) is also designed as an embedded classifier for distinguishing coherent state. Feature extraction for coherent state and related machine learning-based metrics for the quantum classifier are successively suggested. Security analysis based on the linear bosonic channel assumption shows that MLCA-embedded ML-CVQKD outperforms other existing discretely-modulated CVQKD protocols, such as four-state protocol and eight-state protocol, as well as the original Gaussian-modulated CVQKD protocol, and it will be further enhanced with the increase of modulation variance.

Discrete modulation continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution scheme based on realistic detector compensation

Xiaodong Wu, Duan Huang, Peng Huang +1 more

Discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme has good compatibility with efficient error correction codes, which leads to high reconciliation efficiency even at low signal-to-noise ratio. Besides, the implementation of this protocol is simpler than that of Gaussian modulation scheme. However, the quantum efficiency of homodyne detector commonly used in the experiment is only 0.6, which will seriously affect the practical application performance of discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme. To solve this problem, we propose a discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme based on realistic detector compensation. In our scheme, for the outputs of two quantum channels, each adopts a phase sensitive amplifier to compensate for the corresponding realistic homodyne detector. The simulation results show that the phase sensitive amplifier can well compensate for the quantum efficiency of the realistic detector and effectively improve the performance of the discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme with realistic detector in terms of secret key rate and secure transmission distance. The proposed protocol provides an effective method for promoting the practical development of the discrete modulation continuous variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution scheme.

Discrete Modulated Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution: Security and Noise Tolerance Enhanced by Decoy States and Effective Error Correction Protocol Integration

Abdul Mukit, Md Sabbir Hossen Bijoy, Sajid Muhaimin Choudhury +1 more

As the possibility of a genuine, functioning quantum computer becomes closer to reality every day, so does the urge to use the principles of quantum physics to improve the security of communications. One of the most studied areas of quantum communication is quantum key distribution (QKD), however there are still challenges to overcome, such as low detection accuracy, the need for extensive computation, and the lack of extremely efficient error correction. Even though Continuous Variable QKD has seen some significant advancements, there hasn't been much effort to integrate these advancements to make the CVQKD system stronger. By combining discrete modulation, the use of decoy states with the combination of cascade reconciliation and effective polar code-based error correction, our work aims to make the CVQKD more feasible for practical implementation and offer a secure, accurate, and noise-resistant Q KD protocol.

Information reconciliation for phase shift keying discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Zhenguo Lu, Weilin Liu, Yu Zhang +2 more

Discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols are compatible with modern coherent optical communication technologies and devices. As a key part of the protocol, the performance of information reconciliation directly affects the secret key rate and transmission distance. Herein, we propose a reconciliation scheme for hard-decision strategy--based discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol with eight-phase shift keying by combining slice reconciliation and raptor-like low-density parity-check (RL-LDPC) codes. We design the optimal binary sequence encoding of the discretized values of the receiver and sender, which reduce both the number of levels of error correction and the reconciliation complexity. In order to reduce the frame error rate, both the degree distribution and the size of the base matrix of RL-LDPC code is optimized. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reach reconciliation efficiencies of 92.05% and 93% with frame error rates of 6.2% and 11.7% at the signal-to-noise ratio of 0.15, respectively. At these points, the key rates can reach 0.0193 and 0.0195 bits/pulse, respectively.

Rate-Adaptive Reconciliation for Experimental Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution With Discrete Modulation Over a Free-Space Optical Link

Kadir Gümüş, João Frazão, Vincent van Vliet +8 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has been proposed as a method for securely exchanging keys to protect against the security concerns caused by potential advancements in quantum computing. In addition to optical fibre transmission, the free-space optical (FSO) channel is an interesting channel for CV-QKD, as it is possible to share keys over this channel wirelessly. The instability of the FSO channel caused by turbulence-induced fading, however, can cause a degradation in the system's performance. One of the most important aspects of CV-QKD is the reconciliation step, which significantly impacts the performance of the CV-QKD system. Hence, rate-adaptive reconciliation is necessary for CV-QKD over FSO to combat the fluctuations in the channel and improve secret key rates (SKRs). Therefore, in this paper, we simulate the impact of discrete modulation on the reconciliation efficiency and consider the use of$d$-dimensional reconciliation with$d > 8$to mitigate this impact, improving reconciliation efficiencies by up to 3.4%. We validate our results by experimentally demonstrating CV-QKD over a turbulent FSO link and demonstrate SKR gains by up to 165%. Furthermore, we optimise the reconciliation efficiency for FSO links, achieving additional SKR gains of up to 7.6%.
