Wave packets, probabilities of transitions, and multiphoton excitation of atoms

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, A. M. Movsesian

Continuum–continuum, bound–bound, bound–free, and free–bound atomic field-induced transitions are investigated. The initial atomic state is supposed to be given by a wave packet of coherently populated levels of continuous or discrete spectra. Interference effects were found to increase the probabilities of these types of transition and to change their dependence on the pulse duration τ. Interference is shown to occur also in the two-photon ionization probability with highly excited Rydberg levels as intermediate states. Criteria of applicability of the energy diffusion model are formulated. The different diffusion criteria are shown to be incompatible with each other, owing particularly to described interference effects. An alternative picture of multiphoton excitation is suggested. This picture is similar to the above-threshold ionization and predicts the appearance of some maxima in the spectrum of excited electrons below the ionization threshold.

Effect of quantum interference on multiphoton resonant excitation involving high-lying Rydberg orbitals

L. Deng, W. R. Garrett, M. G. Payne +1 more

We report observations of destructive quantum interference in multiphoton resonant excitation of high-lying Rydberg states in xenon. In a recent laser-induced breakdown experiment by Peet [Phys. Rev. A 51, 3982 (1995)], it was claimed that the interference was absent for such high-lying states. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Laser-induced continuum structure in helium:ab initionon-perturbative calculations

Niels J. Kylstra, Emmanuel Paspalakis, P. L. Knight

We present the results of non-perturbative, R -matrix Floquet calculations of laser-induced continuum structures (LICS) in helium. We consider the case in which a Nd:YAG laser is used to embed the 1s4s Rydberg state in the continuum. The resulting modification of the photoionization rate of the 1s2s state is then calculated. This LICS has been studied recently by Halfmann et al (1998 Phys. Rev. A 58 R46) and good agreement with their experimental and theoretical findings is obtained. We also investigate the effects of incoherent channels due to higher-order multiphoton processes and LICS involving the 1s4d state. The validity of the simple two-level models that are frequently used for modelling LICS is tested by comparing these results with R -matrix Floquet calculations.
