Abstract

Edward G Harris Chichester: J Wiley 1975 pp Vol 1: xvii + 383, Vol 2: xvii + 384–780 price £13.50 each During the 30 years that followed its first publication the book Theoretical Physics by Georg Joos had three editions and 20 reprints. In the last decade, however, such attempts to provide a general and sound introduction to the main topics of theoretical physics have been rather out of fashion.

Fundamental Principles of Modern Theoretical Physics

R H Furth Oxford: Pergamon 1970 pp xv + 351 price £4 10s Prof Furth's book based upon lectures given to final year undergraduates at Birkbeck College, London, treats the subject of modern theoretical physics under three headings: quantum theory, relativity theory and statistical mechanics. There are many undergraduate texts which attempt to paint an overall view of modern physics but these are usually at a considerably more elementary level than the present volume.

Modern Physics – The Quantum Physics of Atoms, Solids and Nuclei (3rd edn)

Robert L Sproull and W Andrew Phillips 1980 Chichester: John Wiley xi + 682 pp price £16 The new edition of this nicely produced work has been significantly extended and updated. It is clearly aimed at physics and engineering students who are near the beginning of their courses and requires very little prior mathematical or physics knowledge beyond that contained in the first term of a typical physics degree.

The Basis of Modern Physics

David Bailin

J. M. Irvine Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd. 1967 Pp. vii + 124. Price 7s. 6d. This is a compact book which attempts to isolate and explain the main ideas of modern physics. These are identified as relativity and quantum mechanics, so that the reader may well be left with the impression that there have been no basic ideas since about 1930.

Quantum Physics

Stephen Gasiorowicz Chichester: J Wiley 1974 pp xiii + 514 price £9 Though designed as an introductory book, and clearly and agreeably presented, the overall flavour is that of a more advancedtext. The reviewer, an admirer of the author's previous book on elementary particles, suspects that the mix here was most stimulating in the lecture course from which the book springs, but that it is less appropriate to a textbook.

Atomic Physics

J C Willmott Chichester: J Wiley 1975 pp xiv + 357 price £8.50 ( cased ) £4.25 ( paperback ) This book is another in the Manchester Physics Series of textbooks and is intended for students in their second year of an honours physics course at an English university. The book follows the conventional historical approach to the subject beginning with the experimental evidence for atomicity and the breakdown of classical physics; an introduction to wave mechanics followed by an elementary account of angular momentum in quantal systems and applications to the hydrogen atom.

An Introduction to Theory and Applications of Quantum Mechanics

CHRISTOPHER M. CARE

Amnon Yariv 1982 Chichester: John Wiley xiii + 300 pp price £16.50 (£8.50 paperback) As the title suggests, Professor Yariv has written an introductory text on quantum mechanics which is intended particularly for students of applied physics. The author begins by developing the basic formalism of quantum mechanics in a very clear and concise style.
