Study of the time evolution of correlation functions of the transverse Ising chain with ring frustration by perturbative theory

Abstract

We consider the time evolution of two-point correlation function in the transverse-field Ising chain (TFIC) with ring frustration. The time-evolution procedure we investigated is equivalent to a quench process in which the system is initially prepared in a classical kink state and evolves according to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Within a framework of perturbative theory (PT) in the strong kink phase, the evolution of the correlation function is disclosed to demonstrate a qualitatively new behavior in contrast to the traditional case without ring frustration.

Quantum quench in the transverse field Ising chain: I. Time evolution of order parameter correlators

Pasquale Calabrese, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Maurizio Fagotti

We consider the time evolution of order parameter correlation functions after a sudden quantum quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain. Using two novel methods based on determinants and form factor sums respectively, we derive analytic expressions for the asymptotic behaviour of one- and two-point correlators. We discuss quenches within the ordered and disordered phases as well as quenches between the phases and to the quantum critical point. We give detailed accounts of both methods.

Kink-kink correlations in nonlinear quenches across a quantum critical point

Lakshita Jindal, Kavita Jain

When a quantum system exhibiting a second order phase transition is quenched across the critical point in large but finite time, the dynamics are not adiabatic in the critical region and the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) mechanism provides a framework to determine local observables such as the mean defect density. However, to find higher-point functions, one has to go beyond the KZ paradigm asshown in recent works on one-dimensional transverse field Ising model (TFIM) following a linear quench. It has been found that (i) besides the KZ scale, the quench dynamics depend on another length scale that arises due to the finite phase difference between the low energy modes, and (ii) contrary to the expectations based on the KZ mechanism, in general, the correlation functions do not decay exponentially with distance. Motivated by these results for the linear quench, we are interested in understanding if these properties are universal, and consider the 1D TFIM when the transverse field varies algebraically in the vicinity of the critical field. We focus on the equal-time,longitudinal kink-kink correlation function at the end of the quench from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase, and find that (i) the correlator depends only on the KZ length for superlinear quenches, otherwise an additional dephasing length is required to describe it, and (ii) the dephased correlator decays as a compressed exponential with an exponent that changes continuously with the quench exponent. Our results are obtained using an adiabatic perturbation theory, analytical arguments and exact numerical integration of the relevant equations.

Quantum quenches from excited states in the Ising chain

Leda Bucciantini, Márton Kormos, Pasquale Calabrese

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We prove that stationary values of local correlation functions can be described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. Then we study the full time evolution of the transverse magnetization by means of stationary phase methods. The equal-time two-point longitudinal correlation function is analytically derived for a particular class of excited states for quenches within the ferromagnetic phase, and studied numerically in general. The full time dependence of the entanglement entropy of a block of spins is also obtained analytically for the same class of states and for arbitrary quenches.

Quantum Quench in the Transverse-Field Ising Chain

Pasquale Calabrese, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Maurizio Fagotti

We consider the time evolution of observables in the transverse-field Ising chain after a sudden quench of the magnetic field. We provide exact analytical results for the asymptotic time and distance dependence of one- and two-point correlation functions of the order parameter. We employ two complementary approaches based on asymptotic evaluations of determinants and form-factor sums. We prove that the stationary value of the two-point correlation function is not thermal, but can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). The approach to the stationary state can also be understood in terms of a GGE. We present a conjecture on how these results generalize to particular quenches in other integrable models.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising chain

Tatjana Puškarov, Dirk Schuricht

We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.

Quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism: Kink correlations after a quench in the quantum Ising chain

Radosław J. Nowak, Jacek Dziarmaga

The transverse field in the quantum Ising chain is linearly ramped from the para- to the ferromagnetic phase across the quantum critical point at a rate characterized by a quench time ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{Q}$. We calculate a connected kink-kink correlator in the final state at zero transverse field. The correlator is a sum of two terms: a negative (antibunching) Gaussian that depends on the Kibble-Zurek correlation length only and a positive term that depends on a second longer scale of length. The second length is made longer by dephasing of the state excited near the critical point during the following ramp across the ferromagnetic phase. This interpretation is corroborated by considering a linear ramp that is halted in the ferromagnetic phase for a finite waiting time and then continued at the same rate as before the halt. The extra time available for dephasing increases the second scale of length that asymptotically grows linearly with the waiting time. The dephasing also suppresses magnitude of the second term, making it negligible for waiting times much longer than ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{Q}$. The same dephasing can be obtained with a smooth ramp that slows down in the ferromagnetic phase. Assuming sufficient dephasing, we also obtain higher order kink correlators and the ferromagnetic correlation function.
