Generalized generating functional for mixed-representation Green’s functions: Coherent-state path integral representation

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study mixed-representation Green's functions from the point of view of coherent-state path integrals. This is achieved by using the machinery of generalized generating functionals of Green's functions, previously introduced by the present authors in the context of standard phase-pace path integrals. The obtained results are illustrated in the context of the linear harmonic oscillator.

Harmonic Oscillator, Coherent States, and Feynman Path Integral yz

Dae-Yup Song

The Feynman path integral for the generalized harmonic oscillator is reviewed, and it is shown that the path integral can be used to nd a complete set of wave functions for the oscillator. Harmonic oscillators with dierent (time-dependent) parameters can be related through unitary transformations. The existence of generalized coherent states for a simple harmonic oscillator can then be interpreted as the result of a (formal) invariance under a unitary transformation which relates the same harmonic oscillator. In the path integral formalism, the invariance is reflected in that the kernels do not depend on the choice of classical solutions.

Harmonic Oscillator, Coherent States, and Feynman Path Integral

Dae-Yup Song

The Feynman path integral for the generalized harmonic oscillator is reviewed, and it is shown that the path integral can be used to find a complete set of wave functions for the oscillator. Harmonic oscillators with different (time-dependent) parameters can be related through unitary transformations. The existence of generalized coherent states for a simple harmonic oscillator can then be interpreted as the result of a (formal) {\em invariance} under a unitary transformation which relates the same harmonic oscillator. In the path integral formalism, the invariance is reflected in that the kernels do not depend on the choice of classical solutions.

Correct Path-Integral Formulation of Quantum Thermal Field Theory in Coherent State Representation

Jun-Chen Su, Zheng Fu-Hou

The path-integral quantization of thermal scalar, vector, and spinor fields is performed newly in the coherent-state representation. In doing this, we choose the thermal electrodynamics and φ 4 theory as examples. By this quantization, correct expressions of the partition functions and the generating functionals for the quantum thermal electrodynamics and φ 4 theory are obtained in the coherent-state representation. These expressions allow us to perform analytical calculations of the partition functions and generating functionals and therefore are useful in practical applications. Especially, the perturbative expansions of the generating functionals are derived specifically by virtue of the stationary-phase method. The generating functionals formulated in the position space are re-derived from the ones given in the coherent-state representation.

Coherent State Path Integrals for Systems with Constraints

John R. Klauder

We outline the principal results of a recent examination of the quantization of systems with first- and second-class constraints from the point of view of coherent-state phase-space path integration. Two examples serve to illustrate the procedures.

Path integrals and stationary-phase approximations

John R. Klauder

The general formalism for path integrals expressed in terms of an arbitrary continuous representation (generalized coherent states) is applied to give $c$-number formulations for the canonical algebra and for the spin algebra, and is used to derive meaningful stationary-phase approximations for these two cases. Some clarification of a recent discussion by Jevicki and Papanicolaou for the spin case is given.

Coherent states and a path integral for the Morse oscillator

Christopher C. Gerry

Coherent states for the Morse oscillator are constructed using generalized coherent states associated with the SO(2,1) noninvariance group for this potential. By using the path integral over these states, it is shown that the Morse oscillator may be viewed as a harmonic oscillator evolving in a fictitious time. To show that this picture is mathematically consistent, we compute the path integral for the Green's function and recover the bound-state spectrum.
