Abstract

The free energy of a classical Heisenberg chain with three or four spin interactions is shown to equal that of a spin-infinity Ising model. The two-spin Heisenberg correlation function equals a many-spin Ising correlation function and can oscillate with distance.

Magnetism in One-Dimensional Systems—The Heisenberg Model for Infinite Spin

Michael Ellis Fisher

It is observed that the free-energy, susceptibility, and correlation functions for a linear chain of N spins with nearest-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg coupling can be calculated explicitly in the (classical) limit of infinite spin. The results are compared briefly with those for Ising and Heisenberg chains of spin 12.

Heisenberg Linear Chain Magnets with Unlike Spins –An Exactly Soluble Model–

Hisao Okamoto, Katsuhiko Nagano, Tahashi Karasudani

The free energy, susceptibility and correlation functions for a linear chain of N +1 spins with unequal nearest-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg couplings due to two unlike spins randomly distributed on the chain are calculated explicitly in the (classical) limit of infinite spin. The temperature and concentration dependence of susceptibility are given in comparison with that for one-component systems.

Magnetic Properties of the Random Mixture of the Classical Heisenberg Spins

Shigetoshi Katsura

The specific heat, the susceptibility, and the correlation function at zero field above the critical temperature of the random mixture (quenched site and bond problems) of the classical Heisenberg spins with nearest neighbor interaction were obtained exactly for the linear chain and for an infinite Bethe lattice (Bethe approximation of the two and three dimensional lattices) above the critical temperature. The results are simply expressed by the replacements of 2 cosh K → 4π (sinh K)/K and tanh K → L(K) (L(K) = Langevin function) for K = KAA, KAB, KBA, and KBB in the corresponding expressions of the random mixture of the Ising spins, and qualitative properties of both models are similar.

Diagrammatic representation of the two-spin correlation function for the generalized heisenberg model

Eugene Stanley, M. Howard Lee

We consider a “generalized Heisenberg model”, with a Hamiltonian given by ℋ︁(D) = –JΣij S(D)j, where the quantities Si are isotropically-interacting D-dimensional classical spins and the summation is restricted to nearest-neighbor pairs of sites <i,j>. Thus when D = 1, 2, and 3, this model reduces to the S = 1/2 Ising, plane rotator, and classical Heisenberg models which are useful for describing phase transitions in, respectively, liquid-gas systems, Bose fluids, and magnetic materials. Unfortunately this Hamiltonian is exactly soluble only in the limit D → ∞, in which case the solution corresponds to the spherical model of Berlin and Kac. For finite D, we must consider approximation procedures in order to obtain any useful information. In this paper we develop a diagrammatic representation, valid for arbitrary D, for successive terms in the high-temperature expansions of the free energy and the spin-spin correlation function—from which we can obtain series expansions for all the thermodynamic properties of the system.
