Abstract

We investigate photon transport in a waveguide coupled to two-level quantum emitters with long-range interactions. We derive an exact solution for transmission and reflection amplitudes in the framwork of real-space Hamiltonian. Our explicit formula allows for a complete description of photon transport in the presence of N quantum emitters with arbitrary non-local interactions. We apply this approach to single-photon transport in an one-dimensional waveguide coupled to two atoms with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). Our numerical results confirm the Fano spectrum line shapes as a result of strong DDI, and demonstrate how the split of perfect reflection spectrum and the resonance transmission can be achieved by tuning the photon-atom and the atom-atom interactions.

Waveguide transport mediated by strong coupling with atoms

Mu-Tian Cheng, Jingping Xu, G. S. Agarwal

We investigate single-photon scattering properties in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a quantum emitter's chain with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). The photon transport is extremely sensitive to the location of the evanescently coupled atoms. The analytical expressions of reflection and transmission amplitudes for the chain containing two emitters with DDI are deduced by using a real-space Hamiltonian. Two cases, where the two emitters symmetrically or asymmetrically couple to the waveguide, are discussed in detail. It shows that the reflection and transmission typical spectra split into two peaks due to the DDI. The Fano minimum in the spectra can be used to estimate the strength of the DDI. Furthermore, the DDI makes spectra strongly asymmetric and creates a transmission window in the region where there was zero transmission. The scattering spectra for the chain consisting of multiple emitters are also given. Our key finding is that DDI can broaden the frequency bandwidth for high reflection when the chain consists of many emitters.

Transmission Characteristics of Waveguide-Coupled Nanocavity Embedded in Two Atoms with Dipole-Dipole Interaction

Mu-Tian Cheng, Xiao-San Ma, Xia Wang

Photon scattering properties in one-dimensional waveguide side coupled to a nanocavity embedded in two atoms with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) are investigated theoretically. The analytical expressions of the transmission and reflection amplitudes are deduced by using the real-space Hamiltonian. A method to determine the coupling strength of DDI is proposed. Realization of single photon switching by modulation the DDI is investigated. The influence of dissipations on the performance of the single photon switching are exhibited. An asymmetric Fano-type resonance, which can be controlled by the DDI, appears in the transmission spectrum.

Single-photon transport properties in a one-dimensional resonator waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator containing two separated two-level atoms

Single-photon transport properties in a one-dimensional coupled resonator waveguide, coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator interacting with two separated two-level atoms, are theoretically investigated. Based on the real-space approach, the transmission and reflection amplitudes of the single photon are deduced. Numerical results demonstrate that the transmission and reflection depend on the resonator–atom coupling, the intermode backscattering, and especially the phase difference between these two separated atoms. Effects of dissipation on single-photon transport properties are also discussed.

Dynamical theory of single-photon transport in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to identical and nonidentical emitters

Zeyang Liao, Hyunchul Nha, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

We develop a general dynamical theory for studying a single-photon transport in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide coupled to multiple emitters which can be either identical or nonidentical. In this theory, both the effects of the waveguide and non-waveguide vacuum modes are included. This theory enables us to investigate the propagation of an emitter excitation or an arbitrary single-photon pulse along an array of emitters coupled to a 1D waveguide. The dipole-dipole interaction induced by the non-waveguide modes, which is usually neglected in the literature, can significantly modify the dynamics of the emitter system as well as the characteristics of the output field if the emitter separation is much smaller than the resonance wavelength. Nonidentical emitters can also strongly couple to each other if their energy difference is less than or of the order of the dipole-dipole energy shift. Interestingly, if their energy difference is close but nonzero, a very narrow transparency window around the resonance frequency can appear which does not occur for identical emitters. This phenomenon may find important applications in quantum waveguide devices such as optical switches and ultranarrow single-photon frequency comb generator.

Fully quantum-mechanical analytic results for single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator interacting with a two-level atom

Jung‐Tsung Shen, Shanhui Fan

We analyze the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-type resonator interacting with a two-level atom. The single-photon transport properties such as the transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the resonator and the atom responses, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. The treatment includes the inter-mode backscattering between the two degenerate whispering gallery modes of the resonator, and the dissipations of the resonator and the atom. We also show that a generalized critical coupling condition, that the single-photon transmission at the output of the waveguide goes to zero on resonance for a matched system, holds for the full coupled waveguide-ring resonator-atom system.

Single-photon transport in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide with local and nonlocal coupling to a nanocavity containing a two-level system

Mu-Tian Cheng, Xiao-San Ma, Meng-Ting Ding +2 more

Single-photon scattering properties in a coupled-resonator waveguide (CRW) coupled to a nanocavity embedded with a two-level system are investigated theoretically. Two cases are considered: when the nanocavity is locally coupled to one resonator and when it is nonlocally coupled to two resonators of the CRW. The transmission and reflection amplitudes are obtained for the two cases, respectively. The results show that the position of perfect transmission remains unchanged, while the position of perfect reflection is shifted due to the nonlocal coupling. An asymmetric Fano resonance appears in the transmission spectrum and can be controlled by adjusting the coupling strengths in the nonlocal coupling case. The effects of the coupling strengths and dissipation on the transport properties are also analyzed for the two cases.
