Abstract

Using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and dual vortex theory we analyze the ground state phase diagram of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with nearest neighbor repulsion. In contrast to the case of a triangular lattice, no supersolid emerges for strong interactions. While a uniform superfluid prevails at half-filling, two novel solid phases emerge at densities $\rho=1/3$ and $\rho=2/3$. These solids exhibit an only partial ordering of the bosonic density, allowing for local resonances on a subset of hexagons of the kagome lattice. We provide evidence for a weakly first-order phase transition at the quantum melting point between these solid phases and the superfluid.

Continuous Easy-Plane Deconfined Phase Transition on the Kagome Lattice

Xue‐Feng Zhang, Yin-Chen He, Sebastian Eggert +2 more

We use large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study an extended Hubbard model of hard core bosons on the kagome lattice. In the limit of strong nearest-neighbor interactions at 1/3 filling, the interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuations leads to a valence bond solid ground state. The system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a superfluid phase as the interaction strength is decreased. It is still under debate whether the transition is weakly first order or represents an unconventional continuous phase transition. We present a theory in terms of an easy plane noncompact CP^{1} gauge theory describing the phase transition at 1/3 filling. Utilizing large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations with parallel tempering in the canonical ensemble up to 15552 spins, we provide evidence that the phase transition is continuous at exactly 1/3 filling. A careful finite size scaling analysis reveals an unconventional scaling behavior hinting at deconfined quantum criticality.

Phase diagram of interacting bosons on the honeycomb lattice

Stefan Weßel

We study the ground-state properties of repulsively interacting bosons on the honeycomb lattice using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the hard-core limit, the half-filled system develops long-ranged diagonal order for sufficiently strong nearest-neighbor repulsion. This staggered solid melts at a first-order quantum phase transition into the superfluid phase, without the presence of any intermediate supersolid phase. Within the superfluid phase, both the superfluid density and the compressibility exhibit local minima near the particle (hole) density of one quarter, while the density and the condensate fraction show inflection points in this region. Relaxing the hard-core constraint, supersolid phases emerge for soft-core bosons. The suppression of the superfluid density is found to persist for sufficiently large, finite on-site repulsion.

Mixed columnar-plaquette phase of hard-core bosons and its quantum melting

Stefan Weßel

We examine the ground-state phase diagram of repulsively interacting hard-core bosons on the quarter-filled checkerboard lattice using quantum Monte Carlo simulations constrained to the canonical ensemble. At a sufficiently large repulsion, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a superfluid into a valence-bond-solid regime. We identify this as a weakly first-order quantum melting transition at quarter filling. Furthermore, by examining appropriate order parameters, we exhibit the mixed nature of the valence bond solid, with both columnar and plaquette long-ranged order. Our results demonstrate the realization of the mixed columnar-plaquette phase found recently for the square lattice quantum dimer model in a microscopic bosonic system.

Supersolid Hard-Core Bosons on the Triangular Lattice

Stefan Weßel, Matthias Troyer

We determine the phase diagram of hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsion, paying special attention to the stability of the supersolid phase. Similar to the same model on a square lattice we find that for densities rho<1/3 or rho>2/3 a supersolid phase is unstable and the transition between a commensurate solid and the superfluid is of first order. At intermediate fillings 1/3<rho<2/3 we find an extended supersolid phase even at half filling rho=1/2. The emergence of the supersolid on the triangular lattice reflects a novel and interesting way for a quantum system to avoid classical frustration, similar to an order-by-disorder mechanism. It also offers an exciting possibility of realizing such phenomena in ultracold atoms on optical lattices.

Supersolid Order from Disorder: Hard-Core Bosons on the Triangular Lattice

Roger G. Melko, Arun Paramekanti, A. A. Burkov +3 more

We study the interplay of Mott localization, geometric frustration, and superfluidity for hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsion on the triangular lattice. For this model at half filling, we demonstrate that superfluidity survives for arbitrarily large repulsion, and that diagonal solid order emerges in the strongly correlated regime from an order-by-disorder mechanism. This is thus an unusual example of a stable supersolid phase of hard-core lattice bosons at a commensurate filling.
