Erasing the Past and Impacting the Future with Kaons at a Phi-factory

Abstract

The well known quantum eraser concepts are applied to entangled kaons. Due to different measurement procedures, a specific feature of neutral kaons not shared by other quantum systems, we show that novel options for the quantum eraser phenomena open. Moreover, the proposed kaonic erasers may in future be experimentally demonstrated with the upgraded KLOE detector at the φ-factory.

Kaonic Quantum Erasers at KLOE 2: ``Erasing the Present, changing the Past''

A. Bramòn, Gianni Garbarino, Beatrix C. Hiesmayr

Neutral kaons are unique quantum systems to show some of the most puzzling peculiarities of quantum mechanics. Here we focus on a quantitative version of Bohr's complementary principle and on quantum marking and eraser concepts. In detail we show that neutral kaons (1) are kind of double slit devices encapsulating Bohr's complementarity principle in a simple and transparent way, and (2) offer marking and eraser options which are not afforded by other quantum systems and which can be performed at the DAPHNE machine.

The Dynamical Nonlocality of Neutral Kaons and the Kaonic Quantum Eraser

Beatrix C. Hiesmayr

Testing quantum foundations for systems in high energy physics gets currently more and more attention e.g. witnessed for entangled neutral K‐mesons by the approved programme of the KLOE collaboration at the accelerator facility DAPHNE (Frascati, Italy). We focus on this quantum system in high energy physics and discuss two topics, Bell inequalities and the kaonic quantum eraser, and show how the neutral kaon system differs from systems of ordinary matter and light. In detail, we show a relation of the imbalance of matter and antimatter to the violation of a Bell inequality and discuss another Bell inequality which is maximally violated for a non‐maximally entangled state though neutral kaons can be considered as two state systems. We compare in general this system in high energy physics with bipartite qudits. Last but not least we review the quantum marking and eraser procedure and explain why neutral kaons offer more eraser possibilities than usual quantum systems.

Quantum Mechanics with Neutral Kaons

A. Bramòn, Gianni Garbarino, Beatrix C. Hiesmayr

We briefly illustrate a few tests of quantum mechanics which can be performed with entangled neutral kaon pairs at a Phi-factory. This includes a quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle, the quantum eraser phenomenon and various forms of Bell inequalities.

Kaonic Quantitative Complementarity and Quantum Erasers

We illustrate two basic aspects of quantum mechanics applied to the neutral kaon system. A quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle is first described for the free space evolution of single kaons and entangled kaon pairs. We then show that the neutral kaon system is also suitable for an optimal demonstration of the “quantum eraser”, including its operation in the “delayed choice” mode.

Observation of the post-tagging effect for entangled K mesons at KLOE

ANTONIO DI DOMENICO

Novel quantum phenomena have been recently discussed in association to a peculiar time correlation between entangled neutral kaons produced at a $\phi$-factory: the past state of the first decayed kaon, when it was still entangled before its decay, is post-tagged by the result and the time of the future observation on the other kaon decay. This surprising ``from future to past'' effect is fully observable. Preliminary results obtained on the analysis of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE collider are presented, showing experimental evidence of this new effect.
