Abstract

We theoretically investigate the quantum states of a Hamiltonian model for quasi-one-dimensional ultracold trapped gases. From the ansatz given by the numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation of the system, we develop a scattering potential functional form and an approximate solution for the analytical approach of the model. We obtain the set of approximate eigenstates and eigenenergies that can be used in future improvements on the study of atomic scattering in low dimensional ultracold gases. We also show that there is a parity inversion of the ground state of the model as the interaction strength increases.

Analytical solutions for the dynamics of two trapped interacting ultracold atoms

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We discuss exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation for the system of two ultracold atoms confined in an axially symmetric harmonic potential. We investigate different geometries of the trapping potential, in particular we study the properties of eigenenergies and eigenfunctions for quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional traps. We show that the quasi-one-dimensional and the quasi-two-dimensional regimes for two atoms can be already realized in the traps with moderately large (or small) ratios of the trapping frequencies in the axial and the transverse directions. Finally, we apply our theory to Feshbach resonances for trapped atoms. Introducing in our description an energy-dependent scattering length we calculate analytically the eigenenergies for two trapped atoms in the presence of a Feshbach resonance.

Two ultracold atoms in a quasi-two-dimensional box confinement

Fan Yang, Ruijie Du, Ran Qi +1 more

We investigate the scattering and two-body bound states of two ultracold atoms in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) confinement, with the confinement potential being an infinitely deep square well (box potential) in the transverse ($z$) direction, and the motion of the atoms in the $x\text{\ensuremath{-}}y$ plane being free. Specifically, we calculate the effective 2D scattering length and 2D effective range parameter of the low-energy scattering, as well as the energy and the transverse-excited-mode probability of the bound states. Comparing these results with those obtained under a harmonic transverse confinement potential, which has the same characteristic length as the box potential, we find that in most of the cases the 2D effective range parameter for the box confinement is approximately 0.28 of the one for the harmonic confinement. Moreover, the transverse-excited-mode probability of the bound states for the box confinement is also much lower than the one for the harmonic confinement. These results suggest that the transverse excitation in the box confinement is notably weaker than the one in the harmonic confinement with the same characteristic length. Therefore, achieving quasi-2D ultracold gases well described by pure-2D effective models, particularly those with 2D contact interaction, is more feasible through box confinement. Our results are helpful for the quantum simulation of 2D many-body physics with ultracold atoms, e.g., the suppression of 2D effective range parameter may lead to an enhancement of quantum anomaly in two-dimensional Fermi gases. Additionally, our calculation method is applicable to the two-body problems of ultracold atoms in other types of quasi-2D confinements.

Confinement-induced resonances for a two-component ultracold atom gas in arbitrary quasi-one-dimensional traps

Vittorio Peano, Michael Thorwart, Christophe Mora +1 more

We solve the two-particle s-wave scattering problem for ultracold atom gases confined in arbitrary quasi-one-dimensional (1D) trapping potentials, allowing for two different atom species. As a consequence, the centre-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom do not factorize. We derive bound-state solutions and obtain the general scattering solution, which exhibits several resonances in the 1D scattering length induced by the confinement. We apply our formalism to two experimentally relevant cases: (i) interspecies scattering in a two-species mixture, and (ii) the two-body problem for a single species in a non-parabolic trap.

Quantum mechanics of one-dimensional trapped Tonks gases

Marvin D. Girardeau, Ewan M. Wright

Several experimental groups are currently working towards realizing quasi-one-dimensional (1D) atom waveguides and loading them with ultracold atoms. The dynamics becomes truly 1D in a regime (Tonks gas) of low temperatures and densities and large positive scattering lengths for which the transverse mode becomes frozen, in which case the many-body Schrodinger dynamics becomes exactly soluble via a Fermi-Bose mapping theorem. In this paper we review our recent work on the exact ground state and quantum dynamics of 1D Tonks gases and assess the possibility of approaching the Tonks regime using Bessel beam optical dipole traps.

Crossover dark soliton dynamics in ultracold one-dimensional Bose gases

D. J. Frantzeskakis, P. G. Kevrekidis, Nick P. Proukakis

Ultracold confined one-dimensional atomic gases are predicted to support dark soliton solutions arising from a nonlinear Schrödinger equation of suitable nonlinearity. In weakly-interacting (high density) gases, the nonlinearity is cubic, whereas an approximate model for describing the behavior of strongly-interacting (low density) gases is one characterized by a quintic nonlinearity. We use an approximate analytical expression for the form of the nonlinearity in the intermediate regimes to show that, near the crossover between the two different regimes, the soliton is predicted and numerically confirmed to oscillate at a frequency of sqrt(2 / 3) Ω, where Ω is the harmonic trap frequency. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Description of ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional geometry of a harmonic trap with a realistic interaction

I. S. Ishmukhamedov, D. S. Valiolda, S. A. Zhaugasheva

We compute the ground-state energy of two atoms in a one-dimensional geometry of a harmonic optical trap. We obtain a dependence of the energy on a one-dimensional scattering length, which corre-sponds to various strengths of the interaction potential V int (x) = V 0 exp {−2cx 2}. The calculation is performed by numerical and analytical methods. For the analytical method we choose the oscillator representation method (OR), which has been successfully applied to computations of bound states of various few-body systems. The main results of this paper are (1) a numerical investigation of the validity range of the previously used pseudopotential method and (2) an investigation of the validity range of the OR for the potential V(x) = V conf (x) + V int (x) = x 2/2 + V 0 exp {−2cx 2}.
