Measurement of Stokes-operator squeezing for continuous-variable orbital angular momentum

Jun Guo, Chunxiao Cai, Long Ma +3 more

Abstract We demonstrate experimentally a measurement scheme for the Stokes operators for the continuous-variable squeezed states of orbital angular momentum (OAM). An OAM squeezed state is generated by coupling a dim Hermite-Gauss HG01-mode quadrature-squeezed light beam with a bright HG10-mode coherent light beam on a 98/2 beam splitter. Using an asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer with an extra Dove prism in one arm, we measured the three orbital Stokes operators of the OAM squeezed states with a self-homodyne detection and finally characterized their positions and noise on the orbital Poincaré sphere.

Continuous Variable Entanglement and Squeezing of Orbital Angular Momentum States

Mikael Lassen, Gerd Leuchs, Ulrik L. Andersen

We report the first experimental characterization of the first-order continuous variable orbital angular momentum states. Using a spatially nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO) we produce quadrature entanglement between the two first-order Laguerre-Gauss modes. The family of orbital angular momentum modes is mapped on an orbital Poincaré sphere, where the mode's position on the sphere is spanned by the three orbital parameters. Using a nondegenerate OPO we produce squeezing of these parameters, and as an illustration, we reconstruct the "cigar-shaped" uncertainty volume on the orbital Poincaré sphere.

Mode counting in high-dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement

Martin P. van Exter, Wouter H. J. Peeters, J. P. Woerdman

We demonstrate experimentally how the orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement within a photon pair can be fully characterized with a two-photon interferometer that contains an image rotator. The Schmidt number of the OAM entanglement can be tuned between 1 and 8.

Orbital angular momentum analysis of high-dimensional entanglement

Wouter H. J. Peeters, Emile Verstegen, Martin P. van Exter

We describe a simple experiment that is ideally suited to analyze the high-dimensional entanglement contained in the orbital angular momenta (OAM) of entangled photon pairs. For this purpose we use a two-photon interferometer with a built-in image rotator and measure the two-photon visibility versus rotation angle. Mode selection with apertures allows one to tune the dimensionality of the entanglement; mode selection with spiral phase plates and fibers allows detection of a single OAM mode. The experiment is analyzed in two different ways: either via the continuous two-photon amplitude function or via a discrete modal (Schmidt) decomposition of this function. The latter approach proves to be very fruitful, as it provides a complete characterization of the OAM entanglement.

Continuous variable spin–orbit total angular momentum entanglement on the higher-order Poincaré sphere

Hui Guo, Na Liu, Hengxin Sun +2 more

Optical spin-orbit coupling is an important phenomenon and has fruitful applications. Here, we investigate the spin-orbit total angular momentum entanglement in the optical parametric downconversion process. Four pairs of entangled vector vortex modes are experimentally generated directly using a dispersion- and astigmatism-compensated single optical parametric oscillator, and for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the spin-orbit quantum states are characterized on the quantum higher-order Poincaré sphere, and the relationship of spin-orbit total angular momentum Stokes entanglement is demonstrated. These states have potential applications in high-dimensional quantum communication and multiparameter measurement.

Photonic Orbital Angular Momentum for quantum interplaying with atoms and entanglement

Laurence Pruvost

Photonic Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is becoming a pertinent quantum variable for atom-light interaction, in particular for non-linear interaction which leads to photon entanglement and OAM-entanglement. With two 4-levels atomic schemes, we show that Four Wave Mixing addressed by vortex beams leads to very different OAM-entanglement especially for large OAM values.
