Several Famous Science Experiments for the Essences of Light

Huang Zhi-xun

Several early science experiments such as Michelson-Morley test,Lebedev test,Compton test,Maiman test, etc, for the light's esscnces are discussed. With the development of faster-than-light,very slow light speed, and negative refraction index researches,it is of current interest to understand the situations of the subject about light waves. The new experimental contributions to quantum optics recently are also described, including the laser cooling,Bose-Einstein condensation, and the atom laser.

Laser Cooling and Bose-Einstein Condensation. Bose-Einstein Condensation in Atomic Gases.

Kenji Toyoda, Yoshiro Takahashi, T. Yabuzaki

Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in dilute atomic gases has extensively been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Its principle is to be mentioned, as well as important techniques to realize BEC, such as those for laser cooling and evaporative cooling. As an example of new BEC studies, BEC in a system with a spin degree of freedom is also mentioned, for which we propose here an application of optical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to observe the distribution of spin-polarized atoms with high resolution.
