Lattice mapping for many-body open quantum systems and its application to atoms in photonic crystals

Inés de Vega

We present a derivation that maps the original problem of a many-body open quantum system (OQS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator reservoir into that of a many-body OQS coupled to a lattice of harmonic oscillators. The present method is particularly suitable to analyze the dynamics of atoms arranged in a periodic structure and coupled with the electromagnetic field within a photonic crystal. It allows to solve the dynamics of a many-body OQS with methods alternative to the commonly used master, stochastic Schr\"odinger, and Heisenberg equations, and thus to reach regimes well beyond the weak coupling and Born-Markov approximations.

Quantum error correction under numerically exact open-quantum-system dynamics

Aravind Plathanam Babu, Tuure Orell, Vasilii Vadimov +3 more

The known quantum error-correcting codes are typically built on approximative open-quantum-system models such as Born-Markov master equations. However, it is an open question how such codes perform in actual physical systems that, to some extent, necessarily exhibit phenomena beyond the limits of these models. To this end, we employ numerically exact open-quantum-system dynamics to analyze the performance of a five-qubit error-correction code where each qubit is coupled to its own bath. We first focus on the performance of a single error-correction cycle covering timescales and coupling strengths beyond those of Born-Markov models. We observe distinct power-law behavior of the error-corrected channel infidelity $\ensuremath{\propto}{t}^{2a}$: $a\ensuremath{\lesssim}2$ in the ultrashort times $t<3/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $a\ensuremath{\approx}1/2$ in the short-time range $3/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{c}}<t<30/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{c}}$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ is the cutoff angular frequency of the bath. Furthermore, the observed scaling of the performance of error correction is found to be robust against various imperfections in physical qubit systems, such as perturbations in qubit-qubit coupling strengths and parametric disorder. For repeated error correction, we demonstrate the breaking of the five-qubit error-correction code and of the Born-Markov models if the repetition rate of the error-correction cycles exceeds $2\ensuremath{\pi}/\ensuremath{\omega}$ or the coupling strength $\ensuremath{\kappa}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}\ensuremath{\omega}/10$, where $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is the angular frequency of the qubit. Our results provide bounds of validity for the standard quantum error-correction codes and pave the way for applying numerically exact open-quantum-system methods for further studies of error correction beyond simple error models and for other strongly coupled many-body models.

Research on models of open quantum system interacted with bath

Based on the exact non-Markovian system dynamic equation about the reduced density matrix of quantum system, which is a non-closed,unequal in time,integral-differential equation,a closed, equal in time, differential Markovian master equation was derived about the reduced density matrix of quantum system by means of Born approximation and Markov approximation. The Lindblad form of the Markovian master equation,GKS expression for the convenience of testing positivity,Bloch sphere expression for single qubit system,Kraus expression describing dissipative quantum system without specific information of environment were analyzed respectively.Four kinds of Markov approximations that can remove the non-Markovian property were compared. The post-Markovian master equation was analyzed that can meet the perfect requirements of dissipative dynamic when the Markov approximation is not suitable to the open quantum system. When energy exchange existed between the heat bath and quantum system, and the total system composed of the bath and the quantum system has a conservation of energy, the dynamic equation of open quantum system was presented when the bath does not have a constant state, and the Markovian master equation was derived by the Markov approximation.
