Abstract

We investigate theoretically an enhancement of four-wave mixing (FWM) process in phase-dependent double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) six-level atomic media. It is shown, owing to the multiphoton destructive interference, that the conversion efficiency of FWM can be enhanced by manipulating the relative phase of the applied fields in this ultraslow propagation regime. Moreover, we also find that the conversion efficiency is amplified with the presence of the microwave field in comparison with the previous six-level scheme [Phys. Rev. A76, 043809 (2007)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.76.043809].

Highly efficient four-wave mixing in a coherent six-level system in ultraslow propagation regime

Hui‐jun Li, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain a highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) in a coherent six-level tripod system by using a double-dark resonance and multiphoton destructive interference induced transparency. We show both analytically and numerically that the optical-wave mixing in such a system with a pump wave and an internally generated FWM wave mediated by electromagnetically induced transparency and hence propagating with matched ultraslow group velocities can result in a significant enhancement of FWM conversion efficiency. This interesting scheme may be used to generate coherent short-wavelength radiation in dense optical media with very low pump-wave intensity.

CONTROLLABLE FOUR-WAVE MIXING IN A MICROWAVE-DRIVEN SIX-LEVEL ATOMIC SYSTEM

Ai-Xi Chen, Zhiping Wang, Li Deng

A scheme of high-efficiency four-wave mixing (FWM) is discussed in the case of an atomic medium in a six-level configuration via two electromagnetically induced transparencies (EIT) and a multiphoton destructive interference induced transparency. By adjusting the intensity of the microwave field, an increase of several orders in the conversion efficiency of FWM can be obtained. Our scheme may provide new possibilities for technological applications such as nonlinear spectroscopy at very low light intensity, quantum single-photon nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Linear Growth of Continuous-Wave Four-Wave Mixing with Dual Induced Transparency

Wang Wen-Yi, Jiahua Li

Using Schrödinger–Maxwell formalism, we propose and analyze an optical four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme for the generation of coherent light in a coherent six-level atomic medium based on dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that the significantly enhanced conversion efficiency enabled by ultraslow propagation of pump waves has no direct relationship with the single-photon detuning, which is different from the FWM with a single EIT. The most important feature is that our scheme is also capable of inhibiting and delaying the onset of the detrimental three-photon destructive interference that looks like a recent scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) 243902] and may be used for generating short-wave-length coherent radiation.

High-efficiency four-wave mixing in a five-level atomic system based on two-electromagnetically induced transparency in the ultraslow propagation regime

Zhiping Wang, Shuangxi Zhang

We have analyzed a five-level Λ-configuration four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme for obtaining high-efficiency FWM based on the two-electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the ultraslow propagation regime. We find that the maximum FWM efficiency is nearly 30%, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous schemes based on the two-EIT. Our scheme allows the possibility for new technological applications such as nonlinear spectroscopy at very low light intensity, quantum single-photon nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Engineering helical phase via four-wave mixing in the ultraslow propagation regime

Chao Yu, Zhiping Wang

We describe a theoretical investigation of a four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in a six-level atomic system driven by a field with orbital angular momentum and making use of two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) control fields. The obtained results allow us to control the helical phase of the output FWM field by varying the intensities of the two EIT control fields as well as the detuning of the probe field. More interestingly, we can achieve FWM output fields that are very stable under variation of the system parameters and allow the helical phase twist to be manipulated and suppressed, if desired, by adjusting the probe detuning. In this way, our scheme may open a tool to control the helical phase in a compact, efficient, and robust way.
