Non-Hermitian Schrödinger dynamics with Hagedorn’s wave packets

Abstract

Hagedorn wave packets form an orthonormal basis of the L2-functions and are known solutions of the semiclassical Schrödinger equation with quadratic Hamiltonians. In this thesis we analyse their structure, in particular the polynomial part, their connection to the Hermite functions and their representation in phase space. Based on these findings we utilise them to investigate the time evolution generated by the Schrödinger equation with a non-Hermitian, quadratic Hamiltonian. Operators of this type appear for example in the context of diffusion models and absorbing potentials and are thus of interest in physics and chemistry. We provide explicit formulas for the propagated wave packets and thereby show that the non-unitary evolution activates lower excited states. At last we apply our results to the Lindblad master equation with quadratic internal Hamiltonian and linear Lindblad terms.

Semiclassical phase-space methods for Hermitian and non-Hermitian quantum dynamics

Rush, Alexander

In this thesis, we study semiclassical phase-space methods for quantum evolution in Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. We first present the dynamics of Gaussian wave packets under non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and interpret them as a classical dynamics for complex Hamiltonians. We use these to derive exact dynamics for wave packets in the quadratic Swanson oscillator. We show that in the case of unbroken PT-symmetry there can be periodic divergences in this system and relate this to the fact that any operator mapping the system to a Hermitian counterpart is unbounded. We apply the semiclassical wave-packet dynamics to two further anharmonic example systems: a PT-symmetric wave guide, a version of which we propose as a filtering device for optical beams, and a non-Hermitian single-band tight-binding model, for which we use classical equations of motion to model both narrowly and widely distributed initial states. We further develop an exact quantum propagator for non-Hermitian dynamics using lattices of wave packets, whose evolution is governed by the semiclassical equations of motion. We demonstrate that this accurately reproduces quantum dynamics compared to the split operator method. Finally we study a Hermitian two-mode many-particle model for bosonic atom-molecule conversion, for which the classical phase-space structure is an orbifold. We show that standard semiclassical tools may be applied to recover features such as the dynamics, spectrum and density of states of the many-particle system.

Non-Hermitian propagation of Hagedorn wavepackets

Caroline Lasser, Roman Schubert, Stephanie Troppmann

We investigate the time evolution of Hagedorn wavepackets by non-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonians. We state a direct connection between coherent states and Lagrangian frames. For the time evolution, a multivariate polynomial recursion is derived that describes the activation of lower lying excited states, a phenomenon unprecedented for Hermitian propagation. Finally we apply the propagation of excited states to the Davies–Swanson oscillator.

Wave-packet evolution in non-Hermitian quantum systems

Eva-Maria Graefe, Roman Schubert

The quantum evolution of the Wigner function for Gaussian wave packets generated by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is investigated. In the semiclassical limit $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ this yields the non-Hermitian analog of the Ehrenfest theorem for the dynamics of observable expectation values. The lack of Hermiticity reveals the importance of the complex structure on the classical phase space: The resulting equations of motion are coupled to an equation of motion for the phase-space metric---a phenomenon having no analog in Hermitian theories.

Quantum and semiclassical aspects of Lindblad dynamics

Bradley Longstaff

The Lindblad equation is commonly used to model dissipation and decoherence in open quantum systems. Yet many of the properties of Lindblad dynamics are still little understood. This thesis explores various aspects of the Lindblad equation and its connections with non-Hermitian quantum theories. The evolution speed of Lindblad dynamics is investigated and an explicit expression for the speed is derived. The radial component, connected to the rate at which the purity of the state changes, is shown to be determined by the modified skew information of the Lindblad operators. The semiclassical time evolution of Gaussian states under Lindblad dynamics is then considered and a new type of phase-space dynamics is derived for the centre of a Gaussian Wigner function. By viewing the phase-space Lindblad equation as a Schroedinger equation with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, a further set of semiclassical equations are derived. These can describe the interference terms in Wigner functions. Further, a PT-symmetric two-level system driven through two consecutive exceptional points at finite speed is considered and an analytical expression for the probability of a non-adiabatic transition is derived. It is shown that the transition through the exceptional points can be experimentally addressed in a PT-symmetric lattice using Bloch oscillations. Finally, a quantum implementation of this PT-symmetric system using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice with single-particle losses is investigated.

Lindblad dynamics of Gaussian states and their superpositions in the semiclassical limit

E M Graefe, Bradley Longstaff, T Plastow +1 more

Abstract The time evolution of the Wigner function for Gaussian states generated by Lindblad quantum dynamics is investigated in the semiclassical limit. A new type of phase-space dynamics is obtained for the centre of a Gaussian Wigner function, where the Lindblad terms generally introduce a non-Hamiltonian flow. In addition to this, the Gaussian approximation yields dynamical equations for the covariances. The approximation becomes exact for linear Lindblad operators and a quadratic Hamiltonian. By viewing the Wigner function as a wave function on a coordinate space of doubled dimension, and the phase-space Lindblad equation as a Schrödinger equation with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, a further set of semiclassical equations are derived. These are capable of describing the interference terms in Wigner functions arising in superpositions of Gaussian states, as demonstrated for a cat state in an anharmonic oscillator subject to damping.

Symplectic Group, Ladder Operators, and the Hagedorn Wave Packets

Tomoki Ohsawa

We develop an alternative view of the semiclassical wave packets of Hagedorn---often called the Hagedorn wave packets---stressing the roles of the symplectic and metaplectic groups along with the Heisenberg--Weyl group. Our point of view clarifies the relationship between the Hagedorn wave packets and the Hermite functions by building a bridge between the ladders of wave functions in both theories. This Hagedorn--Hermite correspondence provides an elegant view as well as simple proofs of some essential results on the Hagedorn wave packets. We build the theory starting from fundamental properties of ladder operators. Particularly, we show that the ladder operators of Hagedorn are a natural set obtained from the position and momentum operators using the symplectic group. The idea that pervades our view of the Hagedorn wave packets is so-called symplectic covariance; it generalizes some of fundamental results concerning the Hagedorn wave packets as well as simplifies their proofs. We apply our formulation to show the existence of minimal uncertainty products for the Hagedorn wave packets; it generalizes the one-dimensional result by Hagedorn to multi-dimensions. The Hagedorn--Hermite correspondence also leads to an alternative derivation of the generating function for the Hagedorn wave packets and clarifies its relationship with the generating function for the Hermite functions. This result, in turn, reveals the relationship between the Hagedorn polynomials and the Hermite polynomials.
