An investigation is made of the possible time dependence of decay laws for unstable particles. The probability P(t) that an unstable particle has not decayed at time t is expressed in terms of S-matrix quantities. It is concluded that, contrary to popular belief, the exponential decay law P=e-Γt is only one of a discrete set of possible decay laws.

The Time Evolution of Unstable Particles

We study the time evolution of an unstable particle which decays through a weak interaction. We conclude that, in general, the “survival” probability of any unstable particle contains a “new” mode inversely proportional to a certain power of time, apart from the well-known exponential decay mode which is overwhelmingly dominant. We discuss briefly this new decay mode.

It is well known, both theoretically and experimentally, that the survival probability for an unstable quantum state, formed at t = 0 , is not a simple exponential function, even if the latter is a good approximation for intermediate times. Typically, unstable quantum states/particles can decay in more than a single decay channel. In this work, the general expression for the probability that an unstable state decays into a certain i -th channel between the initial time t = 0 and an arbitrary t > 0 is provided, both for nonrelativistic quantum states and for relativistic particles . These partial decay probabilities are also not exponential and their ratio turns out to be not a simple constant, as it would be in the exponential limit. Quite remarkably, these deviations may last relatively long, thus making them potentially interesting in applications. Thus, multichannel decays represent a promising and yet unexplored framework to search for deviations from the exponential decay law in quantum mechanical systems, such as quantum tunneling, and in the context of particle decays .

Nonclassical face of quantum decay processes

A detailed analysis of the quantum decay processes shows the survival probability ( t ) can not take that exponential form at any time interval including times smaller than the lifetime τ . We show that for times t ∼ τ and for the times later than τ the form of ( t ) looks as a composition of an oscillating and exponential functions. The amplitude of these oscillations is very small for t ≪ τ and grows with increasing time and depends on the model considered. We also study the survival probability of moving relativistic unstable particles with definite momentum : It turns out that late time deviations of the survival probability of these particles from the exponential-like form of the decay law should occur much earlier than it follows from the classical standard approach resolving itself into replacing time t by t / γ (where γ is the relativistic Lorentz factor) in the formula for the survival probability ( t ).

The true quantum face of the “exponential” decay: Unstable systems in rest and in motion

Results of theoretical studies and numerical calculations presented in the literature suggest that the survival probability P0(t) has the exponential form starting from times much smaller than the lifetime τ up to times t ⪢τ and that P0(t) exhibits inverse power–law behavior at the late time region for times longer than the so–called crossover time T ⪢ τ (The crossover time T is the time when the late time deviations of P0(t) from the exponential form begin to dominate). More detailed analysis of the problem shows that in fact the survival probability P0(t) can not take the pure exponential form at any time interval including times smaller than the lifetime τ or of the order of τ and it has has an oscillating form. We also study the survival probability of moving relativistic unstable particles with definite momentum . These studies show that late time deviations of the survival probability of these particles from the exponential–like form of the decay law, that is the transition times region between exponential–like and non-exponential form of the survival probability, should occur much earlier than it follows from the classical standard considerations.
