Integrability and the Conformal Bootstrap

Abstract

Conformal blocks are the central ingredient of bootstrap programme to constructing d-dimensional conformal field theories. I will show that such blocks can be mapped to eigenfunctions of a 2-particle hyperbolic Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian. The latter describes two coupled P\”oschl-Teller particles. Their interaction, whose strength depends smoothly on the dimension $d$, is known to be integrable. Several consequences of this observation will be sketched before I conclude with an outlook on new perspectives for the bootstrap programme.

From Gaudin Integrable Models to d -Dimensional Multipoint Conformal Blocks

In this work, we initiate an integrability-based approach to multipoint conformal blocks for higher-dimensional conformal field theories. Our main observation is that conformal blocks for N-point functions may be considered as eigenfunctions of integrable Gaudin Hamiltonians. This provides us with a complete set of differential equations that can be used to evaluate multipoint blocks.

Calogero-Sutherland approach to defect blocks

Mikhail Isachenkov, Pedro Liendo, Yannick Linke +1 more

Abstract Extended objects such as line or surface operators, interfaces or boundaries play an important role in conformal field theory. Here we propose a systematic approach to the relevant conformal blocks which are argued to coincide with the wave functions of an integrable multi-particle Calogero-Sutherland problem. This generalizes a recent observation in [1] and makes extensive mathematical results from the modern theory of multi-variable hypergeometric functions available for studies of conformal defects. Applications range from several new relations with scalar four-point blocks to a Euclidean inversion formula for defect correlators.

Large-parameter limits of conformal blocks

Connor Behan

Conformally invariant quantum field theories can be “bootstrapped” because they can be defined without reference to a Lagrangian or a Hamiltonian. When they are instead defined in terms of spins and scaling dimensions of local operators, much of the parameter space can be ruled out as unphysical. We review recent results about conformal blocks — special functions important in these numerical studies. Our new result is that they approach monomials as the dimension difference between two operators becomes large. We also discuss the case of large space–time dimension and the question of which limits are useful for the bootstrap.

Gaudin models and multipoint conformal blocks: general theory

Ilija Burić, Sylvain Lacroix, Jeremy A. Mann +2 more

Abstract The construction of conformal blocks for the analysis of multipoint correlation functions with N > 4 local field insertions is an important open problem in higher dimensional conformal field theory. This is the first in a series of papers in which we address this challenge, following and extending our short announcement in [1]. According to Dolan and Osborn, conformal blocks can be determined from the set of differential eigenvalue equations that they satisfy. We construct a complete set of commuting differential operators that characterize multipoint conformal blocks for any number N of points in any dimension and for any choice of OPE channel through the relation with Gaudin integrable models we uncovered in [1]. For 5-point conformal blocks, there exist five such operators which are worked out smoothly in the dimension d.

Conformal field theory on the plane

Sylvain Ribault

We review conformal field theory on the plane in the conformal bootstrap approach. We introduce the main ideas of the bootstrap approach to quantum field theory, and how they apply to two-dimensional theories with local conformal symmetry. We describe the mathematical structures that appear in such theories, from the Virasoro algebra and its representations, to BPZ equations and conformal blocks. Examples include Liouville theory, (generalized) minimal models, free bosonic theories, the $H_3^+$ model, and the $SU_2$ and $\widetilde{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ WZW models. We also discuss relations between some of these models, and limits of these models when the central charge and/or conformal dimensions tend to particular values.
