First- and second-order quantum phase transitions of a q -state Potts model in fractal lattices

Abstract

Quantum phase transitions of a q-state Potts model in fractal lattices are studied using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulation technique. For small values of q, the transition is found to be second order and critical exponents of the quantum critical point are calculated. The dynamic critical exponent z is found to be greater than one for all fractals studied, which is in contrast to integer-dimensional regular lattices. When q is greater than a certain value q_{c}, the phase transition becomes first order, where q_{c} depends on the lattice. Further analysis shows that the characteristics of phase transitions are more sensitive to the average number of nearest neighbors than the Hausdorff dimension or the order of ramification.

Quantum criticality from Ising model on fractal lattices

Beni Yoshida, Aleksander Kubica

We study the quantum Ising model on the Sierpiński triangle, whose Hausdorff dimension is $\log 3/ \log 2 \approx 1.585$, and demonstrate that it undergoes second-order phase transition with scaling relations satisfied precisely. We also study the quantum $3$-state Potts model on the Sierpiński triangle and find first-order phase transition, which is consistent with a prediction from $ε$-expansion that the transition becomes first-order for $D > 1.3$. We then compute critical exponents of the Ising model on higher-dimensional Sierpiński pyramids with various Hausdorff dimension via Monte-Carlo simulations and real-space RG analysis for $D\in[1,3]$. We find that only the correlation length exponent $ν$ interpolates the values of integer-dimensional models. This implies that, contrary to a generally held belief, the universality class of quantum phase transition may not be uniquely determined by symmetry and spatial dimension of the system. This work initiates studies on quantum critical phenomena on graphs and networks which may be of significant importance in the context of quantum networks and communication.

Quantum critical behavior of the quantum Ising model on fractal lattices

Hangmo Yi

I study the properties of the quantum critical point of the transverse-field quantum Ising model on various fractal lattices such as the Sierpiński carpet, Sierpiński gasket, and Sierpiński tetrahedron. Using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulation method and finite-size scaling analysis, I identify the quantum critical point and investigate its scaling properties. Among others, I calculate the dynamic critical exponent and find that it is greater than one for all three structures. The fact that it deviates from one is a direct consequence of the fractal structures not being integer-dimensional regular lattices. Other critical exponents are also calculated. The exponents are different from those of the classical critical point and satisfy the quantum scaling relation, thus confirming that I have indeed found the quantum critical point. I find that the Sierpiński tetrahedron, of which the dimension is exactly 2, belongs to a different universality class than that of the two-dimensional square lattice. I conclude that the critical exponents depend on more details of the structure than just the dimension and the symmetry.

The Monte Carlo method is used to study phase transitions in the two-dimensional Potts model with the number of states spin q=3 on square and hexagonal lattices. Considered systems with linear dimensions Lx L=N, L=21/102. The obtained numerical data indicate that in the considered In the Potts model, a second-order phase transition is observed in accordance with the analytical theory. The Binder cumulants method of the fourth order determines the values of the critical points of the Potts model on different lattices. Calculation of critical exponents on fractal lattice Ising model by higher-order tensor renormalization group method

Jozef Genzor

The critical behavior of the Ising model on a fractal lattice, which has the Hausdorff dimension log_{4}12≈1.792, is investigated using a modified higher-order tensor renormalization group algorithm supplemented with automatic differentiation to compute relevant derivatives efficiently and accurately. The complete set of critical exponents characteristic of a second-order phase transition was obtained. Correlations near the critical temperature were analyzed through two impurity tensors inserted into the system, which allowed us to obtain the correlation lengths and calculate the critical exponent ν. The critical exponent α was found to be negative, consistent with the observation that the specific heat does not diverge at the critical temperature. The extracted exponents satisfy the known relations given by various scaling assumptions within reasonable accuracy. Perhaps most interestingly, the hyperscaling relation, which contains the spatial dimension, is satisfied very well, assuming the Hausdorff dimension takes the place of the spatial dimension. Moreover, using automatic differentiation, we have extracted four critical exponents (α, β, γ, and δ) globally by differentiating the free energy. Surprisingly, the global exponents differ from those obtained locally by the technique of the impurity tensors; however, the scaling relations remain satisfied even in the case of the global exponents.

Thermal Ising transitions in the vicinity of two-dimensional quantum critical points

Stephan Heßelmann, Stefan Weßel

The scaling of the transition temperature into an ordered phase close to a quantum critical point as well as the order parameter fluctuations inside the quantum critical region provide valuable information about universal properties of the underlying quantum critical point. Here, we employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations to examine these relations in detail for two-dimensional quantum systems that exhibit a finite-temperature Ising-transition line in the vicinity of a quantum critical point that belongs to the universality class of either (i) the three-dimensional Ising model for the case of the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field on the square lattice or (ii) the chiral Ising transition for the case of a half-filled system of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsion. While the first case allows large-scale simulations to assess the scaling predictions to a high precision in terms of the known values for the critical exponents at the quantum critical point, for the later case, we extract values of the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}$, related to the order parameter fluctuations, which we discuss in relation to other recent estimates from ground-state quantum Monte Carlo calculations as well as analytical approaches.

Phase transitions in two-dimensional ferromagnetic Potts model with q = 3 on a triangular lattice

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Albert Babaevich Babaev, G. Ya. Ataeva

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Potts model with the number of spin states q = 3 on a triangular lattice were studied using Monte-Carlo method. The systems of linear size L = 20–120 were considered. Using the method of the fourth-order Binder cumulants, it was demonstrated that the second order phase transition is observed in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Potts model. The static critical exponents for the heat capacity α, susceptibility γ, magnetization β and correlation radius ν were calculated based on the finite-dimensional scaling theory.
