Simpler description of the quantum dynamics in the ultra-strong coupling regime of the Rabi Hamiltonian

Abstract

The Rabi Hamiltonian is characterized by: Ω - the frequency of the transition between the atomic levels, ω - the oscillator frequency, and λ - the coupling between these two subsystems. Even though the Rabi Hamiltonian is quite simple its complete solution is rather complicated and simpler Hamiltonian forms are needed for various regimes of parameters. In the ultra-strong coupling regime of the Rabi Hamiltonian there is a quantum transition point given by λ = √Ωω. In an adiabatic regime this point is also a transition from an adiabatic potential with one minimum to an adiabatic potential with two minima. In this short communication we verify the validity of the approximate adiabatic dynamics around quantum transition point.

Quantum dynamics of two-photon quantum Rabi model

Zhiguo Lü, Chunjian Zhao, Hang Zheng

Abstract We apply a simple analytical method based on a unitary transformation to calculate the ground state, its excitation spectrum and quantum dynamic evolution of physical quantities for the double-photon quantum Rabi Hamiltonian over the wide coupling-strength range. The concise analytical method possesses the same mathematical simplicity as the approach of the rotating wave approximation (RWA). By quantitative comparison with the numerically exact result obtained by matrix diagonalization, we confirm that our calculated results obtained by transformed rotating-wave method are not only accurate in the weak coupling regime but also correct in intermediate strong-coupling case. In the intermediate ultrastrong-coupling regime, the calculated values of the ground state and lower lying excited states are nearly the same as the exact ones. It turns out that our calculation for the energy spectrum is beyond the ordinary-RWA. Meanwhile, we demonstrate the signatures resulting from the counter-rotating wave terms by monitoring the population, the coherence, the squeezing of the photon under the ultra-strong conditions. In particular, we find that when the frequency of the photon is much larger than the transition frequency of the system, the lineshape of the time evolution becomes complicated with the increase of the coupling strength, which may be verified experimentally.

Oscillator tunneling dynamics in the Rabi model

E. K. Twyeffort Irish, Julio R. Gea-Banacloche

The familiar Rabi model, comprising a two-level system coupled to a quantum harmonic oscillator, continues to produce rich and surprising physics when the coupling strength becomes comparable to the individual subsystem frequencies. We construct approximate solutions for the eigenstates and energies in the regime in which the oscillator frequency is small compared to that of the two-level system and the coupling strength matches or exceeds the oscillator frequency. The resulting oscillator dynamics closely resembles that of a particle tunneling in a classical double-well potential. Relating our calculation to an earlier semiclassical approximation in which coupling to the two-level system creates an effective potential for the oscillator, we examine the extent to which this picture is valid. We find that, for certain parameter regimes, the interpretation of the oscillator dynamics in terms of tunneling holds to a good approximation despite the fundamentally entangled nature of the joint system. We assess the prospects for observation of oscillator tunneling in the context of nano- or micromechanical experiments and find that it should be possible if suitably high coupling strengths can be engineered.

Analog quantum simulation of the Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime

Jochen Braumüller, Michael Marthaler, Andre Schneider +4 more

The quantum Rabi model describes the fundamental mechanism of light-matter interaction. It consists of a two-level atom or qubit coupled to a quantized harmonic mode via a transversal interaction. In the weak coupling regime, it reduces to the well-known Jaynes-Cummings model by applying a rotating wave approximation. The rotating wave approximation breaks down in the ultra-strong coupling regime, where the effective coupling strength g is comparable to the energy ω of the bosonic mode, and remarkable features in the system dynamics are revealed. Here we demonstrate an analog quantum simulation of an effective quantum Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime, achieving a relative coupling ratio of g/ω ~ 0.6. The quantum hardware of the simulator is a superconducting circuit embedded in a cQED setup. We observe fast and periodic quantum state collapses and revivals of the initial qubit state, being the most distinct signature of the synthesized model. An analog quantum simulation scheme has been explored with a quantum hardware based on a superconducting circuit. Here the authors investigate the time evolution of the quantum Rabi model at ultra-strong coupling conditions, which is synthesized by slowing down the system dynamics in an effective frame.

The Rabi Hamiltonian in the dispersive regime

Titus Sandu

The Rabi Hamiltonian is studied in the dispersive regime and ultra-strong coupling. We employ a recent unitary transformation to obtain not only the approximate Hamiltonian and its energy levels but also its eigenfunctions. The relationship of the approximation with other regimes and their approximations are also discussed.

The two-qubit quantum Rabi model: inhomogeneous coupling

Lijun Mao, Sainan Huai, Yunbo Zhang

We revisit the analytic solution of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model with inhomogeneous coupling and transition frequencies using a displaced oscillator basis. This approach enables us to apply the same truncation rules and techniques adopted in the Rabi model to the two qubits system. The derived analytical spectra match perfectly with the numerical solutions in the parameter regime where the qubits’ transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultrastrong coupling regime. We further explore the dynamical behavior of the two qubits as well as the evolution of entanglement. The analytical methods provide unexpectedly accurate results in describing the dynamics of the two qubits in the present experimentally accessible coupling regime. The time evolutions of the probability for the qubits show that the collapse-revival phenomena emerge, survive and finally disappear when one coupling strength increases from weak to strong coupling regimes and the other coupling strength is well into the ultrastrong coupling regime. The inhomogeneous coupling system exhibits new dynamics, which are different from the homogeneous coupling case.

Adiabatic approximation for three qubits ultrastrongly coupled to a harmonic oscillator

Li-Tuo Shen, Rongxin Chen, Huai‐Zhi Wu +1 more

We study the system involving mutual interaction between three qubits and an oscillator within the ultrastrong coupling regime. We apply the adiabatic approximation approach to explore two extreme regimes: (i) the oscillator's frequency is far larger than each qubit's frequency and (ii) the qubit's frequency is far larger than the oscillator's frequency, and analyze the energy-level spectrum and the ground-state property of the qubit-oscillator system under the conditions of various system parameters. For the energy-level spectrum, we concentrate on studying the degeneracy in low-energy levels. For the ground state, we focus on its nonclassical properties that are necessary for preparing the nonclassical states. We show that the minimum qubit-oscillator coupling strength needed for generating the nonclassical states of the Schr\"odinger-cat type in the oscillator is just one half of that in the Rabi model. We find that the qubit-qubit entanglement in the ground state vanishes if the qubit-oscillator coupling strength is strong enough, for which the entropy of three qubits remains larger than 1. We also observe the phase-transition-like behavior in the regime where the qubit's frequency is far larger than the oscillator's frequency.
