Abstract

We develop an improved variant of $U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) ansatz to investigate the ground state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ square $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In order to improve the accuracy of the ansatz, we discuss a simple strategy to select automatically relevant symmetric sectors and also introduce an optimization method to treat second-neighbor interactions more efficiently. We show that variational ground-state energies of the model obtained by the $U(1)$-symmetric iPEPS ansatz (for a fixed bond dimension $D$) set a better upper bound, improving previous tensor-network-based results. By studying N\'{e}el order parameter and correlation function in the large-$D$ limit, we find that a deconfined quantum-critical point occurs at $J^{c_1}_{2}=0.530(5)$, where the correlation length of the system diverges as $\xi \sim D^{1.2}$. The estimated critical anomalous exponents $\eta_{s}=0.65(5)$ and $\eta_{d}=1.9(1)$ for spin and dimer correlations respectively show strong deviation from those of the well-known $\mathcal{J}$-$\mathcal{Q}$ model, suggesting possibly a different universality class. The pattern of local bond energy for the intermediate phase is compatible with the columnar valence bond solid (VBS) state, with a quite competitive variational ground-state energy in comparison with plaquette VBS one predicted by the density matrix renormalization group. We show that the associated VBS order parameter first monotonically increases with $J_2$ and finally a first-order quantum phase transition takes place at $J^{c_2}_{2}=0.610(3)$ to the conventional Stripe phase. We compare our results with earlier DMRG and PEPS studies and suggest future directions for resolving remaining issues.

U(1) -symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair states study of the spin-1/2 square J1−J2 Heisenberg model

Reza Haghshenas, D. N. Sheng

We develop an improved variant of $U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) ansatz to investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ square ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In order to improve the accuracy of the ansatz, we discuss a simple strategy to select automatically relevant symmetric sectors and also introduce an optimization method to treat second-neighbor interactions more efficiently. We show that variational ground-state energies of the model obtained by the $U(1)$-symmetric iPEPS ansatz (for a fixed bond dimension $D)$ set a better upper bound, improving previous tensor-network-based results. By studying the finite-$D$ scaling of the magnetically order parameter, we find a N\'eel phase for ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}<0.53$. For $0.53<{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}<0.61$, a nonmagnetic columnar valence bond solid (VBS) state is established as observed by the pattern of local bond energy. The divergent behavior of correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\sim}{D}^{1.2}$ and vanishing order parameters are consistent with a deconfined N\'eel-to-VBS transition at ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}}/{J}_{1}=0.530(5)$, where estimated critical anomalous exponents are ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{s}\ensuremath{\sim}0.6$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{d}\ensuremath{\sim}1.9$ for spin and dimer correlations, respectively. We show that the associated VBS order parameter monotonically increases with ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$ and finally a first-order quantum phase transition takes place at ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{2}}/{J}_{1}=0.610(2)$ to the conventional Stripe phase. We compare our results with earlier DMRG and PEPS studies and suggest future directions for resolving remaining issues.

Quantum phase diagram of spin-1 J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice: An infinite projected entangled-pair state and density matrix renormalization group study

Reza Haghshenas, Wang-Wei Lan, Shou-Shu Gong +1 more

We study the spin-1 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor ${J}_{1}$ and the next-nearest-neighbor ${J}_{2}$ couplings by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. The iPEPS simulation, which studies the model directly in the thermodynamic limit, finds a crossing of the ground state from the N\'eel magnetic state to the stripe magnetic state at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.549$, showing a direct phase transition. In the finite-size DMRG calculation on the cylinder geometry up to the cylinder width ${L}_{y}=10$, we find that around the same critical point the N\'eel and the stripe orders are strongly suppressed, which implies the absence of an intermediate phase. Both calculations identify that the stripe order comes with a first-order transition at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.549$. Our results indicate that unlike the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ square model, quantum fluctuations in the spin-1 model may not be strong enough to stabilize an intermediate nonmagnetic phase.

Tensor-product state approach to spin- 12 square J1−J2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model: Evidence for deconfined quantum criticality

Ling Wang, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Frank Verstraete +1 more

The ground state phase of a spin-$\frac{1}{2} {J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a square lattice around the maximally frustrated regime $({J}_{2}\ensuremath{\sim}0.5{J}_{1})$ has been debated for decades. Here we study this model using the cluster update algorithm for tensor-product states (TPSs). The ground state energies at finite sizes and in the thermodynamic limit (with finite size scaling) are in good agreement with exact diagonalization study. Through finite size scaling of the spin correlation function, we find the critical point ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}}=0.572(5){J}_{1}$ and critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.50(8),\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{s}=0.28(6)$. In the range of $0.572<{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.6$ we find a paramagnetic ground state with an exponentially decaying spin-spin correlation. Up to a $24\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}24$ system size, we observe power law decaying dimer-dimer and plaquette-plaquette correlations with an anomalous plaquette scaling exponent ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{p}=0.24(1)$ and an anomalous columnar scaling exponent ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}=0.28(1)$ at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.6$. These results are consistent with a potential gapless $U(1)$ spin-liquid phase. However, since the $U(1)$ spin liquid is unstable due to the instanton effect, a valence bond solid order with very small amplitude might develop in the thermodynamic limit. Thus, our numerical results strongly indicate a deconfined quantum critical point at ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}}$. Remarkably, all the observed critical exponents are consistent with the $J\text{\ensuremath{-}}Q$ model.

Absence of spin liquid phase in the J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Xiangjian Qian, Mingpu Qin

We perform an in-depth investigation of the phase diagram of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. We take advantage of density matrix renormalization group and fully augmented matrix product states methods and reach unprecedented accuracy with large bond dimensions. We utilize excited-level crossing analysis to pinpoint the phase transition points. It was believed before that there exists a narrow spin liquid phase sandwiched by the N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence bond solid (VBS) phases. Through careful finite-size scaling of the level crossing points, we find a direct phase transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$, suggesting the absence of an intermediate spin liquid phase. We also provide accurate results for ground-state energies for a variety of sizes, from which we find that the transition between the N\'eel AFM and VBS phases is continuous. These results indicate the existence of a deconfined quantum critical point at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.535(3)$ in the model. From the crossing of the first derivative of the energies with ${J}_{2}$ for different sizes, we also determine the precise location of the first-order phase transition between the VBS and stripe AFM phases at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.610(5)$.

Investigation of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice: A study with projected entangled-pair states

L R Ma, Wei-Lin Tu, Didier Poilblanc +1 more

The nature of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice remains an open and actively debated problem. In this work, we employ the infinite projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) to systematically investigate the model under different symmetry constraints. Our simulations reveal a direct transition from the $120^\circ$ Néel state to a putative QSL at $J_2/J_1\approx 0.08$, signaled by the collapse of magnetic order. We further show that, through either an appropriate unitary rotation or spontaneous spin long-range order, the stripe antiferromagnetic phase can also be accurately captured within the infinite PEPS framework. A central focus of our study is the role played by the PEPS symmetry in approximating the QSL ground-state sandwiched between the two magnetic phases. We first found that a fully-symmetric topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Resonating Valence Bond state, which can be written as a simple PEPS with bond dimension $D=3$, exhibits a reasonably good variational energy. Motivated by this finding, we have further constructed generic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric PEPS of larger bond dimension (up to $D=7$). We found that, under wavefunction optimization, spinons condense and, simultaneously, topological vison excitations get confined, hence precluding $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. This strongly indicates the gapless (or critical) nature of the QSL phase, which is most naturally consistent with a U(1) Dirac spin liquid scenario.

Symmetric projected entangled-pair states analysis of a phase transition in coupled spin- 12 ladders

Juraj Hašík, Glen Bigan Mbeng, Sylvain Capponi +2 more

Infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) have been introduced to accurately describe many-body wave functions on two-dimensional lattices. In this context, two aspects are crucial: the systematic improvement of the Ansatz by the optimization of its building blocks, i.e., tensors characterized by bond dimension $D$, and the extrapolation scheme to reach the ``thermodynamic'' limit $D\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. Recent advances in variational optimization and scaling based on correlation lengths demonstrated the ability of iPEPS to capture phases with spontaneously broken continuous symmetry such as the antiferromagnetic (N\'eel) one with high fidelity, in addition to valence-bond solids which are already well described by finite-$D$ iPEPS. In contrast, systems in the vicinity of continuous quantum phase transitions still present a challenge for iPEPS, especially when non-Abelian symmetries are involved. Here, we consider the iPEPS Ansatz to describe the continuous transition between the (gapless) antiferromagnet and the (gapped) paramagnet that exists in the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on coupled two-leg ladders. In particular, we show how accurate iPEPS results can be obtained down to a narrow interval around criticality and analyze the scaling of the order parameter in the N\'eel phase in a spatially anisotropic situation.
