Abstract

We propose an effective method to achieve extremely slow light by using both the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the localization of a coupled cavity waveguide (CCW). Based on quantum mechanics theory and the dispersion relation of a CCW, we derive a group-velocity formula that reveals both the effects of the EIT and CCW. Results show that ultralow light velocity at the order of several meters per second or even static light, could be obtained feasibly. In comparison with the EIT mechanism in a background of vacuum, this proposed method is more effective and realistic to achieve extremely slow light. And it exhibits potential values in the field of light storage.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and controllable group velocity in a five-level atomic system

Lihui Jin, Shangqing Gong, Yueping Niu +1 more

The optical properties of a five-level atomic system composed of a 'Lambda'-type four-level atomic and a tripod four-level atomic systems are investigated. It is found that the behaviors of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and group velocity can be controlled by choosing appropriate parameters with the interacting dark resonances. In particular, when all the fields are on resonance, the slow light at the symmetric transparency windows with a much broader EIT width is obtained by tuning the intensity of the coupling field in comparison with its sub-system, which provides potential applications in quantum storage and retrieval of light.

Slow light with cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

Jiepeng Zhang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

We report an experimental observation of slow light propagation in cold Rb atoms exhibiting cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The steep slope of the atomic dispersion manifested by EIT reduces the light group velocity. The cavity filtering and feedback further contribute to the slowdown and delay of the light pulse propagation. A combination of the cavity and the EIT atomic system significantly improves the performance of the slow light propagation. A propagation time delay of approximately 200 ns was observed in the cavity and Rb EIT system, which is approximately 70 times greater than the time delay calculated for the light pulse propagation through the same Rb EIT system without the cavity.

Analysis of the Slow Speed of Light and Ultrafast Light Path to Achieve

Xiaoli Li

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) technology can be used to achieve slow speed of light corresponding to normal dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng/d ω0),and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA)can be used to achieve ultrafast light or even negative group velocity of light corresponding to anomalous dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng /d ω0. The study of ultraslow light and ultrafast light is of interest in the research of the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, electronics and the theory of information.

Dynamic light storage based on controllable electromagnetically induced transparency effect

Liu-Ying Zeng, Jun-Fang Wu, Chao Li

We analytically and numerically investigate a signal light storing mechanism based on the controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. We demonstrate that the isolation between the waveguide and the cavities cannot be achieved instantly as soon as the two cavities are tuned into resonance, no matter the index tuning rate is ultrafast or slow. We also investigate the temporal evolution features of the intracavity energy when the pulse during time is prolonged. We find many periodical oscillations of the trapped energy in both cavities, and they are entirely complementary. Our analysis shows that the adiabatic wavelength conversion in both cavities and a phase difference π between them play critical roles in this phenomenon.

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency in cylindrical waveguide

Agus Muhamad Hatta, Ali A. Kamli, Ola Al-Hagan +1 more

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the core of cylindrical waveguide (CW) for an optical fiber system containing three-level atoms is investigated. The CW modes are treated in the weakly guiding approximation which renders the analysis into manageable form. The transparency window and permittivity profile of the waveguide due to the strong pump field in the EIT scheme is calculated. For a specific permittivity profile of the waveguide due to EIT, the propagation constant of the weak signal field and spatial shape of fundamental guided mode are calculated by solving the vector wave equation using the finite difference method. It is found that the transparency window and slow light field can be controlled via the CW parameters. The reduced group velocity of slow light in this configuration is useful for many technological applications such as optical memories, effective control of single photon fields, optical buffer and delay line.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an all-dielectric nano-metamaterial for slow light application

Qiao Wang, Li Yu, Huixuan Gao +2 more

Slow light technique has significant potential applications in many contemporary photonic device developments for integrated all-optical circuit, such as buffers, regenerators, switches and interferometers. In this paper, we present an efficient coupling mechanism of an electromagnetically induced transparency like (EIT-like) effect in an all-dielectric nano-metamaterial. This EIT-like effect is generated by destructive interference between a radiative Fabry-Perot (FP) mode and a dark waveguide (WG) mode, which is based on a combined structure of a dielectric grating and multilayer films. The dark WG mode is excited by guided mode of dielectric grating instead of radiative FP mode. In analogy to the molecular transition process, the FP mode, guided mode and WG mode are denoted by excited states of |1〉, |2〉 and |3〉. The two coupling pathways of the EIT-like effect in our metamaterial are |0〉 → |1〉 and |0〉 → |2〉 → |3〉 → |1〉, where |0〉 is the ground state. The simulated resonant wavelength of WG mode is consistent with theoretical result. We further confirm this EIT-like effect through a two-oscillator coupling analysis. We achieve a group refractive index of 913.6 by adjusting these two modes coupling of the EIT-like effect, which is useful for developing slow light device. This work provides a valuable solution to realize electromagnetically induced transparency in all-dielectric nanomaterial.
