Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive overview on jamming strategies in the physical layer for securing wireless communications. As a complement to traditional cryptography-based approaches, physical layer based security provisioning techniques offer a number of promising features that have not been previously available. Among the physical layer security techniques, jamming is an effective way to degrade the channel quality of the eavesdroppers for ensuring security. We start by giving a brief introduction to the fundamental principles of physical layer security and jamming. Then we classify jamming strategies from three different perspectives and explain the major related designs in various scenarios. Finally, we discuss the open issues of jamming that can be helpful to foster future research.

Physical Layer Security Jamming: Theoretical Limits and Practical Designs in Wireless Networks

Kanapathippillai Cumanan, Hong Xing, Peng Xu +5 more

Physical layer security has been recently recognized as a promising new design paradigm to provide security in wireless networks. In addition to the existing conventional cryptographic methods, physical layer security exploits the dynamics of fading channels to enhance secured wireless links. In this approach, jamming plays a key role by generating noise signals to confuse the potential eavesdroppers, and significantly improves quality and reliability of secure communications between legitimate terminals. This article presents theoretical limits and practical designs of jamming approaches for physical layer security. In particular, the theoretical limits explore the achievable secrecy rates of user cooperation-based jamming whilst the centralized and game theoretic-based precoding techniques are reviewed for practical implementations. In addition, the emerging wireless energy harvesting techniques are exploited to harvest the required energy to transmit jamming signals. Future directions of these approaches and the associated research challenges are also briefly outlined.

An Overview of Key Technologies in Physical Layer Security

Abraham Sanenga, Galefang A. Mapunda, Tshepiso Jacob +3 more

The open nature of radio propagation enables ubiquitous wireless communication. This allows for seamless data transmission. However, unauthorized users may pose a threat to the security of the data being transmitted to authorized users. This gives rise to network vulnerabilities such as hacking, eavesdropping, and jamming of the transmitted information. Physical layer security (PLS) has been identified as one of the promising security approaches to safeguard the transmission from eavesdroppers in a wireless network. It is an alternative to the computationally demanding and complex cryptographic algorithms and techniques. PLS has continually received exponential research interest owing to the possibility of exploiting the characteristics of the wireless channel. One of the main characteristics includes the random nature of the transmission channel. The aforesaid nature makes it possible for confidential and authentic signal transmission between the sender and the receiver in the physical layer. We start by introducing the basic theories of PLS, including the wiretap channel, information-theoretic security, and a brief discussion of the cryptography security technique. Furthermore, an overview of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication is provided. The main focus of our review is based on the existing key-less PLS optimization techniques, their limitations, and challenges. The paper also looks into the promising key research areas in addressing these shortfalls. Lastly, a comprehensive overview of some of the recent PLS research in 5G and 6G technologies of wireless communication networks is provided.

Physical Layer Security Techniques for Wireless Communication Systems

Manish Nagpal, Sampa Chau Pattnaik, Paramjit Baxi +3 more

One of the most important issues for secure communication in the physical layer is developing physical layer security techniques to provide confidentiality and data integrity in wireless communication systems. The properties of the physical channel are used in these methodologies to safeguard communication from eavesdropping and some other security threats. This article presents physical layer security methods that can be implemented in wireless communication systems. Artificial Noise (AN) is one of the most popular techniques. The original signal is combined with a generated by the transmitter in such a way that eavesdroppers cannot easily decode the data. Cooperative Anti-jamming: Yet another strategy for jammer localization is to employ cooperative jamming, where multiple friendly users can add noise signals over the signal in an effort to confuse potential eavesdroppers. In addition, additional technologies such as multi-input multi-output beamforming and transmit power control can further improve the security of wireless communication systems. In this regard, strategies based on game theory have been proposed as a viable alternative to enhancing physical layer security. Viewing the interaction between the transmitter, receiver, and eavesdropper as a game allows us to reveal their optimal strategies and security levels.

Physical Layer Security in Wireless Networks – Concept, Performance and Perspectives

Vasilije Lutovac, Enis Kočan

Ensuring secure wireless communications is crucial, given their vulnerability to a wide range of risks and attacks. Physical Layer Security (PLS) techniques offer an excellent complement to traditional cryptographic algorithms, enhancing overall security. This paper provides a brief overview of the theoretical foundations of PLS techniques, and presents the basic concept. Three models are simulated and analyzed: a basic model and two cooperative models involving one and two jammers. The performance for these models, in terms of secrecy rate and bit error rate, are evaluated. Finally, the paper concludes with insights into potential applications and the future prospects of PLS techniques in modern wireless communication systems.
