Abstract

The study of the evolution of quantum states performed with photonic techniques, commonly requires the use of complex interferometric schemes. Here we present a novel setup based on multipass bulk interference that allows to recreate and measure different kinds of quantum state evolutions, passing from sequential maps to quantum walks.

A Novel Bulk-Optics Scheme for Quantum Walk with High Phase Stability

Andrea Geraldi, L. D. Bonavena, Carlo Liorni +2 more

A novel bulk optics scheme for quantum walks is presented. It consists of a one-dimensional lattice built on two concatenated displaced Sagnac interferometers that make it possible to reproduce all the possible trajectories of an optical quantum walk. Because of the closed loop configuration, the interferometric structure is intrinsically stable in phase. Moreover, the lattice structure is highly configurable, as any phase component perceived by the walker is accessible, and finally, all output modes can be measured at any step of the quantum walk evolution. We report here on the experimental implementation of ordered and disordered quantum walks.

A versatile setup for the observation of different quantum phenomena

Daniel Esteban Ochoa Tamayo

We propose an experimental setup capable of constructing and monitoring quantum evolutions. In addition, applications that use the proposed scheme to implement quantum random walks and the quantum Zeno effect are briefly explained, showing this way both the capabilities and versatility of our scheme. Finally, the setup is arranged to establish a configuration in which, by means of weak measurements, a measurement of non-commuting operators can be achieved.

Andrea Geraldi, Luós Diego Bonavena, Carlo Liorni +2 more

We present a bulk-optics setup for discrete quantum walks, based on a novel multipass displaced Sagnac geometry. It is phase stable, reconfigurable and allows to meausure the output radiation at each step. The experimental results of both ordered and disordered one-particle evolutions are reported.

Quantum interferometric generation of polarization entangled photons

Haruka Terashima, Satoshi KOBAYASHI, Takaho Tsubakiyama +1 more

Quantum interference, like Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, has played an important role to test fundamental concepts in quantum physics. We experimentally show that the multiple quantum interference effects enable the generation of high-performance polarization entangled photons. These photons have a high-emission rate, are degenerate, have a broadband distribution, and are postselection free. A quantum interferometric scheme, based on a round-trip configuration of a double-pass polarization Sagnac interferometer, makes it possible to use the large generation efficiency of polarization entangled photons in the process of parametric down-conversion and to separate degenerate photon pairs into different optical modes with no requirement of postselection. We demonstrate experimentally that multiple quantum interference is not only an interesting fundamental quantum optical phenomenon but can be used for novel photonic quantum information technologies.

Multiphoton interference in a single-spatial-mode quantum walk

Kate L. Fenwick, Baker, Jonathan, Guillaume Thekkadath +6 more

Multiphoton interference is crucial to many photonic quantum technologies. In particular, interference forms the basis of optical quantum information processing platforms and can lead to significant computational advantages. It is therefore interesting to study the interference arising from various states of light in large interferometric networks. Here, we implement a quantum walk in a highly stable, low-loss, multiport interferometer with up to 24 ultrafast time bins. This time-bin interferometer comprises a sequence of birefringent crystals which produce pulses separated by 4.3\,ps, all along a single optical axis. Ultrafast Kerr gating in an optical fiber is employed to time-demultiplex the output from the quantum walk. We measure one-, two-, and three-photon interference arising from various input state combinations, including a heralded single-photon state, a thermal state, and an attenuated coherent state at one or more input ports. Our results demonstrate that ultrafast time bins are a promising platform to observe large-scale multiphoton interference.
