Optical Free Induction Decay in Cold85Rb Atoms

Unyob Shim, S. B. Cahn, Anantharaman Kumarakrishnan +2 more

We have observed optical free induction decay (FID) in cold 85 Rb atoms. The shortening of the FID lifetime with increasing optical depth of the trap has been found. This shortening is explained by an anomalous absorption for FID propagating in a homogeneous and resonant sample. Theoretical calculations are consistent with experimental results. The Rabi oscillations of FID amplitude have been observed by increasing the pulse area.

Effects of magnetic fields on magnetic grating free induction decay (MGFID) in a cold Rb vapor

S. B. Cahn, Anantharaman Kumarakrishnan, Unyob Shim +1 more

Summary form only given. The magnetic grating free induction decay (MGFID) may be produced in a sample of room temperature (300 K) /sup 35/Rb, demonstrating the coherence between alternate magnetic sublevels. The decay rate of this coherence is dominated by the dispersal of the atoms and proportional to the most probable velocity u of the atoms. By slowing and confining the atoms in a magnetooptic trap, the decay rate may be reduced by several orders of magnitude.

Optical free-induction decay of laser-cooled 85 Rb

K. Toyoda, Yoshiro Takahashi, Kiyoshi Ishikawa +1 more

Optical free-induction decay (FID) of laser-cooled ${}^{85}$Rb has been observed. Considerably good agreements are obtained between experiments and theoretical calculations in the condition of no inhomogeneous broadening. The possibility to apply optical FID measurements to the studies of phase relaxation in a dense atom trap is discussed.
