Permutation symmetry and entanglement in multipartite quantum states of unequal subsystem dimensions

Abstract

Permutation symmetries of multipartite quantum states are defined only when the constituent subsystems are of equal dimensions. In this work we extend this notion of permutation symmetry to heterogeneous systems, that is, systems composed of subsystems having unequal dimensions. Given a tensor product space of $k$ subsystems (of arbitrary dimensions) and a permutation operation $\sigma$ over $k$ symbols, these states are such that they have identical decompositions (up to an overall phase) in the given tensor product space and the tensor product space obtained by the permuting the subsystems by $\sigma$. Towards this, we construct a matrix whose action is to simultaneously permute the subsystem label and subsystem dimension of a given state according to permutation $\sigma$. Eigenvectors of this matrix have the required symmetry. We then examine entanglement of states in the igenspaces of these matrices. It is found that all nonsymmetric eigenspaces of such matrices are completely entangled subspaces, with states being equally entangled in both the given tensor product space and the permuted tensor product space.

Entangled subspaces and quantum symmetries

Anthony J. Bracken

Entanglement is defined for each vector subspace of the tensor product of two finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, by applying the notion of operator entanglement to the projection operator onto that subspace. The operator Schmidt decomposition of the projection operator defines a string of Schmidt coefficients for each subspace, and this string is assumed to characterize its entanglement, so that a first subspace is more entangled than a second, if the Schmidt string of the second majorizes the Schmidt string of the first. The idea is applied to the antisymmetric and symmetric tensor products of a finite-dimensional Hilbert space with itself, and also to the tensor product of an angular momentum $j$ with a spin $1∕2$. When adapted to the subspaces of states of the nonrelativistic hydrogen atom with definite total angular momentum (orbital plus spin), within the space of bound states with a given total energy, this leads to a complete ordering of those subspaces by their Schmidt strings.

Multipartite Quantum Systems and Representations of Wreath Products

Vladimir V. Kornyak

The multipartite quantum systems are of particular interest for the study of such phenomena as entanglement and non-local correlations. The symmetry group of the whole multipartite system is the wreath product of the group acting in the “local” Hilbert space and the group of permutations of the constituents. The dimension of the Hilbert space of a multipartite system depends exponentially on the number of constituents, which leads to computational difficulties. We describe an algorithm for decomposing representations of wreath products into irreducible components. The C implementation of the algorithm copes with representations of dimensions in quadrillions. The program, in particular, builds irreducible invariant projectors in the Hilbert space of a multipartite system. The expressions for these projectors are tensor product polynomials. This structure is convenient for efficient computation of quantum correlations in multipartite systems with a large number of constituents.

Certifying separability and entanglement classes of not-completely-permutation-symmetric qudit states

Artur Barasiński, Mateusz Nowotarski

We analyze the entanglement properties for the not-completely-permutation-symmetric states of quantum systems composed of two subsystems with an equal but arbitrary finite local Hilbert space dimension. We investigate both pure and mixed states with such a symmetry obtained by relaxing the symmetry requirement of the axisymmetric states. For such states we discuss the entanglement classification with respect to stochastic local operations and classical communication and establish the entanglement quantitatively by means of concurrence and negativity. In particular, we determine the separability criterion in the frame of various methods, including the $k$-positive map witness, optimal Schmidt-number witnesses, and entanglement measures.

Construction and Characterization of Symmetrical States for Multiqubit Systems

P. J. Lin‐Chung

A general method in constructing a complete set of wave functions for multipartite identical qubits is presented based on the irreducible representations of the permutation group and the nth rank tensors. Particular examples for n =2, 3, and 4 are derived and the entanglement behavior for each state is examined from several criteria. It is found that the states so constructed are all bound entangled states. For the case of even n, all the states are found to have maximum "n-tangle". The symmetry in spin space is found to increase the n-tangle in general. The "n-tangle" for n = 4 is found not always representing 4-way entanglement. It measures the degree of spin-space symmetry instead. A useful relationship in the classification between systems containing different number of qubits is given in terms of the Young's Tableaux based on our analysis.

Symmetries of finite Heisenberg groups for multipartite systems

Miroslav Korbelář, J. Tolar

A composite quantum system comprising a finite number k of subsystems which are described with position and momentum variables in , i = 1, ..., k , is considered. Its Hilbert space is given by a k -fold tensor product of Hilbert spaces of dimensions n 1 , ..., n k . The symmetry group of the respective finite Heisenberg group is given by the quotient group of certain normalizer. This paper extends our previous investigation of bipartite quantum systems to arbitrary multipartite systems of the above type. It provides detailed description of the normalizers and the corresponding symmetry groups. The new class of symmetry groups represents a very specific generalization of symplectic groups over modular rings. As an application, a new proof of existence of the maximal set of mutually unbiased bases in Hilbert spaces of prime power dimensions is provided.
