Abstract

We demonstrate the emission of polarization-entangled photons from a single semiconductor quantum dot in the telecom C-band (1530 nm–1565 nm). To reach this telecommunication window, the well-established material system of InAs quantum dots embedded in InGaAs barriers is utilized with an additional insertion of an InGaAs metamorphic buffer to spectrally shift the system to the desired wavelengths. For the observation of polarization-entangled photon pairs, the biexciton-exciton cascade of a quantum dot displaying an intrinsically low fine-structure splitting is investigated by means of polarization-dependent cross-correlation measurements. A complete set of tomography measurements enables us to reconstruct the two-photon density matrix and therefore to calculate a corresponding fidelity f+ to the maximally entangled Bell state Ψ+ of 0.61 ± 0.07, a concurrence of 0.74 ± 0.11, a tangle of 0.55 ± 0.14, and a negativity of 0.63 ± 0.12, clearly proving the entanglement of the states. Finally, the development of the concurrence is studied in dependency of the post-selected time-gate of the emission events and the progression of the time-delay dependent fidelity to distinct Bell states is displayed.

Generation of C-band entangled photon pairs by biexciton-exciton cascade from symmetric InAs/InP quantum dots

Anna Musiał, Maja Wasiluk, Katarzyna Roszak +6 more

Hereby, we study the generation of pairs of polarization-entangled photons at telecom C-band by biexciton-exciton cascade from non-resonantly excited epitaxial InAs/InP quantum dots (QDs). It is realized without external tuning of the fine structure splitting (FSS), which does not exceed 10 $μ$eV in as-grown nanostructures, due to their high in-plane symmetry. Excitonic complexes are identified by means of excitation power-dependent and polarization-resolved magneto)microphotoluminescence. Their origin from different carrier configurations confined in the same QD is confirmed by time correlations of emitted photons. Experimental results are supported by 8-band kp calculations, followed by the configuration interaction method to include excitonic effects. This comparison reveals the structure of higher energy states, allowing for the reconstruction of the QD structural parameters. To verify and quantify the entanglement, we perform quantum state tomography and reconstruct the two-photon density matrix. Its diagonalization allows a detailed analysis of the entangled state and reveals an unfavourable interplay between phase accumulation and decoherence, pointing to a clear route for boosting entanglement by using a XX resonant, pulsed excitation scheme and shortening the radiative lifetimes.

A Quantum Light Source for Quantum Information Applications in the Telecom C-Band

Anderson, Matthew

Semiconductor quantum dot (QD) quantum light sources have long been established as suitable candidates for many quantum information applications, due to the on-demand emission of highly pure and highly indistinguishable single and entangled photons. A key factor in the development of this technology is the operation over the standard telecommunication optical fibre network infrastructure, where the minimum absorption wavelength window is centred on the telecom C-band (1530 – 1565 nm). Initial experiments in this work demonstrated single-photon emission of a QD light source emitting directly in the telecom C-band, under both continuous wave (CW) and 1-GHz pulsed excitation regimes. The QDs were further characterised in terms of fine-structure splitting (FSS) and coherence time, in order to determine their suitability for quantum entanglement and interference-based applications. Long coherence times were observed in the majority of the QDs considered, allowing the demonstration of Hong-Ou-Mandel-type two-photon interference of subsequently emitted photons under CW excitation. The post-selected interference visibility was found to be limited by only the detector resolution and single-photon purity. A further demonstration of high-visibility interference under the same limitations was then made using QD photons and dissimilar photons from a laser, forming the basis of a fibre-based quantum relay. Working further towards a quantum relay, polarisation-entangled photon pairs in the telecom C-band were then generated using the radiative cascade of the biexciton, where a record high fidelity to the ©+ Bell state was observed under both CW and 1-GHz pulsed excitation regimes. While an anomalous effect of the FSS was observed in a majority of the studied QDs, a further characterisation of the FSS in terms of the QD polarisation eigenstates confirmed the emission of entangled photon pairs from such an anomalous-splitting QD. Finally, the work of this thesis was combined to demonstrate a proof-of-principle quantum relay using a QD light source in the telecom C-band. The relay was operated first under CW excitation where polarisation encoded laser input qubits were used and high-fidelity quantum teleportation was observed. In an effort to demonstrate a more technologically relevant application, the quantum relay was subsequently operated at 1 GHz in order to demonstrate the teleportation of initially time-bin encoded laser input qubits. A high mean teleportation fidelity was again observed, demonstrating the potential of this telecom C-band QD quantum light source in the future of long-distance quantum information applications.

Entangled Photon Pair Generation in the Telecom O-Band from Nanowire Quantum Dots

Mohammed K. Alqedra, Chiao-Tzu Huang, Edith Yeung +6 more

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Entangled photon pairs at telecom wavelengths are essential for quantum communication, distributed computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing. The telecom O-band offers low chromatic dispersion and fiber loss, which is ideal for long-distance networks. Site-controlled nanowire quantum dots have emerged as a promising platform for generating single and entangled photons, offering high extraction efficiency and scalability. However, their operation has largely been restricted to the visible and first near-infrared (NIR-I) windows. Here, we demonstrate a bright source of entangled photon pairs in the telecom O-band based on site-controlled nanowire quantum dots. We measure a fine-structure splitting of 4.6 μeV, confirming suitability for high-fidelity polarization entanglement. Quantum-state tomography of the biexciton–exciton cascade reveals a maximum fidelity of 85.8 ± 1.1% to the Φ + Bell state and a maximum concurrence of 75.1 ± 2.1%. This work establishes nanowire quantum dots as viable entangled photon sources at telecom, advancing scalable quantum technologies for fiber-based networks.

Biexciton cascade in telecommunication wavelength quantum dots

M. B. Ward, P. M. Intallura, Chandra M. Natarajan +11 more

We report on polarisation correlation from the cascaded recombination of biexcitons in a quantum dot emitting at a telecommunication wavelength. The fine structure splitting of the exciton state in this InAs/GaAs quantum dot is of the order of 100 μeV and polarisation correlation is expected. Strong polarisation correlation between the biexciton and exciton emission lines is observed under both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed laser excitation so telecom wavelength quantum dots with lower energy splittings could be suitable for entangled photon pair generation. Measurements were performed using nanowire superconducting single photon detectors (SSPDs). SSPDs offer low time-jitter and improve the resolution of features in the correlation spectra, including the asymmetric dip and peak resulting from the cascaded emission with the peak extending more than an order of magnitude above the Poissonian level.

Coherent control and high purity single-photon emission from telecom quantum dots on metamorphic InGaAs

Beatrice Costa, Bianca Scaparra, Hubert Riedl +5 more

Semiconductor quantum dots emitting in the telecommunication O- and C-bands are promising candidates as single-photon sources for fiber-based quantum communication. In this work, we show how coherent quasi-resonant and phonon-assisted excitation help reveal the intrinsic optical properties of InAs quantum dots embedded in relaxed InGaAs matrices on top of metamorphic InGaAs layers for achieving emission in the telecom bands. By systematically comparing excitation schemes, we separate excitation-induced effects from intrinsic emitter properties. This allows us to observe linewidths as narrow as 21 $μ$eV, the disappearance of slow decay channels, and single-photon purity reaching second-order autocorrelation values in the order of $10^{-2}$. Photoluminescence excitation reveals higher excited states, enabling coherent control of trion transitions and the observation of Rabi-like oscillations in both telecom bands. These results confirm the promising potential of these quantum dots for applications in quantum technologies.

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Entangled photons are an integral part in quantum optics experiments and a key resource in quantum imaging, quantum communication, and photonic quantum information processing. Making this resource available on-demand has been an ongoing scientific challenge with enormous progress in recent years. Of particular interest is the potential to transmit quantum information over long distances, making photons the only reliable flying qubit. Entangled photons at the telecom C-band could be directly launched into single-mode optical fibers, enabling worldwide quantum communication via existing telecommunication infrastructure. However, the on-demand generation of entangled photons at this desired wavelength window has been elusive. Here, we show a photon pair generation efficiency of 69.9 ± 3.6% in the telecom C-band by an InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot on a metamorphic buffer layer. Using a robust phonon-assisted two-photon excitation scheme we measure a maximum concurrence of 91.4 ± 3.8% and a peak fidelity to the Φ + state of 95.2 ± 1.1%, verifying on-demand generation of strongly entangled photon pairs and marking an important milestone for interfacing quantum light sources with our classical fiber networks.
