Double-image storage optimized by cross-phase modulation in a cold atomic system

Abstract

A tripod-type cold atomic system driven by double-probe fields and a coupling field is explored to store double images based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). During the storage time, an intensity-dependent signal field is applied further to extend the system with the fifth level involved, then the cross-phase modulation is introduced for coherently manipulating the stored images. Both analytical analysis and numerical simulation clearly demonstrate a tunable phase shift with low nonlinear absorption can be imprinted on the stored images, which effectively can improve the visibility of the reconstructed images. The phase shift and the energy retrieving rate of the probe fields are immune to the coupling intensity and the atomic optical density. The proposed scheme can easily be extended to the simultaneous storage of multiple images. This work may be exploited toward the end of EIT-based multiple-image storage devices for all-optical classical and quantum information processings.

Efficient images storage via modulating the atomic spin coherence in a N-type system

Tianhui Qiu, Hongyang Ma, L. X. Xia

A four-level N-type cold atomic system is proposed for optimizing images storage based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Both analytical analysis and numerical simulation clearly show that the application, during the storage time, of an additional intensity-modulated signal field and an additional microwave field can impose an intensity and a phase-dependent factors on the atomic spin coherence in a controlled manner, then the amplitude of the retrieved images can be increased or decreased with an enhancement in the visibility. Our results are very promising for the realization of all-optical information processing of images coherently stored in EIT media in the future.

Manipulating stored images with phase imprinting at low light levels

Lu Zhao, Guojian Yang, Wenhui Duan

Coherent manipulation of stored images is performed at low light levels based on enhanced cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level N-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. Using intensity masks in the signal pulse, quadratic phase shifts with low nonlinear absorption can be efficiently imprinted on the Fraunhofer diffraction patterns already stored in the EIT system. Fast-Fourier-transform-based numerical simulations clearly demonstrate that the far-field images of the retrieved probe light can be flexibly modulated by applying different signal fields. Our studies could help advance the goals of nonlinear all-optical processing for spatial information coherently stored in EIT systems.

Quantum storage of optical signals and coherent manipulation of quantum states based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Hai Wang, Changde Xie, Kunchi Peng

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) techniques are important tools for the storage of the quantum states of light fields in atomic ensembles and for enhancement of the interaction between photons. In this paper, we briefly summarize the recent experimental studies conducted by our group on enhanced cross-phase modulation based on double EIT effects, the quantum interference of stored dual-channel spin-wave excitations and the coherent manipulation of the spin wave vector for the polarization of photons in a single tripod atomic system. The work presented here has potential application in the developing field of quantum information processing.

Enhanced Cross-Phase Modulation Based on a Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four-Level Tripod Atomic System

Shujing Li, Xudong Yang, Xuemin Cao +3 more

We report experimental observations on the simultaneous electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effects for probe and trigger fields (double EIT) as well as the enhanced cross-phase modulation (XPM) between the two fields in a four-level tripod EIT system of the D1 line of 87Rb atoms. The XPM coefficients (larger than 2 x 10(-5) cm2/W) and the accompanying transmissions (higher than 60%) are measured at a slight detuning of the probe field from the exact EIT-resonance condition. The system and enhanced cross-Kerr nonlinearities presented here can be applied to quantum information processes.

Low-Light-Level Cross-Phase-Modulation Based on Stored Light Pulses

Yong‐Fan Chen, Chang-Yi Wang, Shih-Hao Wang +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate a low-light-level cross-phase-modulation (XPM) scheme based on the light-storage technique in laser-cooled 87Rb atoms. The proposed scheme can achieve a similar phase shift and has the same figure of merit as one using static electromagnetically induced transparency under the constant coupling field. Nevertheless, the phase shift and the energy loss of a probe pulse induced by a signal pulse are neither influenced by the coupling intensity nor by the atomic optical density in the light-storage XPM scheme. This scheme enhances the flexibility of the experiment and makes possible conditional phase shifts on the order of pi with single photons.

Storage and retrieval of vector optical solitons via double electromagnetically induced transparency

Yang Chen, Zhiming Chen, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to realize storage and retrieval of two-component optical soliton in a coherent atomic system. The system under consideration is a cold, lifetime-broadened four-level atomic gas with a tripod configuration working at the condition of double electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that due to the existence of two dark states, the optical absorption of the probe pulse can be largely reduced. In addition, the two orthogonal polarization components of the probe pulse with a form of vector optical soliton cannot only be slowed down substantially but also be stored and retrieved robustly by switching a control laser field off and on. We also show that it is possible to achieve a memory of $N$-component optical soliton by using the $N$ dark states in a $(N+1)$-pod system $(N>2)$. The results reported here may have promise in applications for light information processing in a weak nonlinear regime.
