Abstract

Nonlinear wavelength conversion is essential for many classical and quantum pho-tonic applications. The underlying second-order nonlinear optical processes, however, generally exhibit limited spectral bandwidths that impact their application potential. Here we use a high-Q X-cut lithium niobate microdisk resonator to demonstrate both second-harmonic generation and spontaneous parametric down-conversion on chip. In particular, our lithium niobate microresonator, with its wide-range cyclic phase matching and rich optical mode structures, is able to achieve ultra-broadband spontaneous parametric down-conversion, with a bandwidth over 400 nm, inferred from recorded spectra of the down-converted photons. The produced biphoton pairs exhibit strong temporal correlation, with a coincidence-to-accidental ratio measured to be 43.1. Our device is promising for integrated quantum photonics where optical frequency could be used as a degree of freedom for signal processing.

Efficient parametric frequency conversion in lithium niobate nanophotonic chips

Chip-integrated nonlinear photonics holds the key for advanced optical information processing with superior performance and novel functionalities. Here, we present an optimally mode-matched, periodically poled lithium niobate nanowaveguide for efficient parametric frequency conversions on chip. Using a 4-mm nanowaveguide with subwavelength mode confinement, we demonstrate second harmonic generation with efficiency over 2200% W −1 c m −2, and broadband difference frequency generation over a 4.3-THz spectral span. These allow us to generate correlated photon pairs over multiple frequency channels via spontaneous parametric down conversion, all in their fundamental spatial modes, with a coincidence to accidental ratio as high as 600. The high efficiency and dense integrability of the present chip devices may pave a viable route to scalable nonlinear applications in both classical and quantum domains.

Enhanced Nonlinear Frequency Conversion Bandwidth through Birefringence induced Mode Hybridization

Tingge Yuan, Jiangwei Wu, Xueyi Wang +3 more

On-chip quantum information network requires qubit transfer between different wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement, which needs broadband up-conversion available. Herein, we demonstrate a mode-hybridization based broadband nonlinear frequency conversion on X-cut thin film lithium niobate. With the spontaneous quasi-phase matching and quasi groupvelocity matching being simultaneously satisfied, broadband second harmonic generation with a 3-dB bandwidth up to 13 nm has been achieved in a micro-racetrack resonator. The same mechanism can work on the frequency conversion of the ultra-short pulse in the bent waveguide structure. This work will be beneficial to on-chip tunable frequency conversion and quantum light source generation on integrated photonic platforms, and further enable on-chip large-capacity multiplexing, multichannel optical information processing, and large quantum information networks.

Spectrally multiplexed and ultrabright entangled photon pairs in a lithium niobate microresonator

Boyu Xu, Likun Chen, Jintian Lin +10 more

Abstract On-chip bright quantum sources with multiplexing ability are extremely high in demand for the integrated quantum networks with unprecedented scalability and complexity. Here, we demonstrate an ultrabright and broadband biphoton quantum source generated in a lithium niobate microresonator system. Without introducing the conventional domain poling, the on-chip microdisk produces entangled photon pairs covering a broad bandwidth promised by natural phase matching in spontaneous parametric down conversion. Experimentally, the multiplexed photon pairs are characterized by 30 nm bandwidth limited by the filtering system, which can be furthered enlarged. Meanwhile, the generation rate reaches 5.13 MHz/μW with a coincidence-to- accidental ratio up to 804. Besides, the quantum source manifests the prominent purity with heralded single photon correlation g(2)H(0)=0.0098±0.0021 and energy-time entanglement with excellent interference visibility of 96.5%±1.9%.
