Highly entangled photon pairs generated from the biexciton cascade transition in a quantum-dot–metal-nanoparticle hybrid system

Tara Moradi, M. Bagheri Harouni, M. H. Naderi

The entanglement between photon pairs generated from the biexciton cascade transition in a semiconductor quantum dot located in the vicinity of a metal nanoparticle is theoretically investigated. In the model scheme, the biexciton-exciton and exciton--ground-state transitions are assumed to be coupled to two principal plasmon modes of orthogonal polarizations. For a broad spectral window, because the horizontal and vertical spectra overlap, the biexciton and exciton photons are degenerate in energy. This allows us to overcome the natural splitting between the intermediate exciton states. Moreover, the degree of entanglement depends on the geometrical parameters of the system, i.e., the radius of the metal nanoparticle and the distance between the quantum dot and the nanoparticle. The results reveal that such a hybrid system profoundly modifies the photon entanglement even in the absence of strong coupling between the emitter and the metal nanosphere.

A diode nanocavity for fast, efficient and tunable emission of highly entangled photon pairs and Fourier-transform-limited single photons

Deterministic sources of entangled photon pairs and indistinguishable photons are expected to play a key role in photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates due to their on-demand emission and compatibility with nanophotonic structures. However, current implementations face trade-offs between extraction efficiency, Purcell enhancement, as well as charge noise that causes blinking and degrades indistinguishability. Here we demonstrate a tunable nano-optoelectronic device based on a quantum dot embedded in a p-i-n diode circular-Bragg-grating-resonator and featuring extraction efficiencies up to 0.55(6) and Purcell-factor of $\sim$8. The device generates wavelength-tunable entangled photon pairs with suppressed blinking and raw (corrected) concurrence > 0.89 (0.91) over a range of 1.6 nm. The very same source also emits single, nearly Fourier-limited and highly indistinguishable photons with raw (corrected) $\mathcal{V}_{\text{HOM}}$ = 0.951(4) (0.988(6)). These results demonstrate a viable platform for semiconductor quantum photonics.

Enhancement of the second-harmonic generation in a quantum dot–metallic nanoparticle hybrid system

Mahi R. Singh

We have investigated the second-harmonic generation (SHG) and dipole-dipole interaction in a quantum dot and metallic nanoparticle hybrid system. A strong probe field is applied to create two-photon absorption in the quantum dot and metallic nanoparticle. SHG photons and SHG surface plasmon polaritons are emitted by the quantum dot and metallic nanoparticle, respectively. Induced dipoles are created in the quantum dot and the metallic nanoparticle due to two-photon absorption and hence both systems interact with each other via the dipole-dipole interaction. It is found that SHG signals produced by the quantum dot and nanoparticle are enhanced by the dipole-dipole interaction and also that the SHG signal can be switched on and off by applying a control field. The theoretical findings of this paper are supported by recent experimental studies. The present hybrid system can be used to fabricate nano-sensors and all-optical nano-switching devices.
