Abstract

We study the feasibility of generating photon pairs in a resonant Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) as a result of a third-order non-linear, four wave mixing interaction. We focus on degenerate four wave mixing in the spontaneous regime where two pump photons are annihilated to create a pair of signal and idler photons. Using the methods of quantum optics, we calculate the two-photon production rate, the spectrum of the generated photons, and the signal-idler cross-correlations. We highlight how the dispersion of the medium in the VCSEL cavity (a regular GaAs configuration) significantly diminishes the two-photon production rate. Based on our results, we enumerate the characteristics of a VCSEL that would be suitable for photon pair generation.

Generation of intensity squeezed light with VCSELs: theory and experiment

Wolfgang E. Elsaesser, Jean-Luc C. Vey, Karsten Auen +1 more

We present comprehensive investigations on the polarization resolved quantum noise behavior of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with various cavity designs. These experiments are accompanied by detailed studies using a semiclassical approach, first, to calculate and model theoretically the amplitude fluctuations and correlations of a two orthogonal polarization-mode semiconductor laser as realized by a VCSEL, and second, to explore theoretically the squeezing potential of VCSELs. First, we find that the possible amount of squeezing with VCSELs should be superior as compared to edge emitting lasers for ideal single mode operation and under comparable pumping conditions. Second, we demonstrate that there exists the possibility of squeezing also in the two-mode regime besides sub-shot noise emission in the well known ideal single-mode operation regime configuring the recently published first experimental demonstration of the generation of amplitude squeezed light with VCSELs. Third, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of amplitude squeezed light by a lateral and polarization single mode VCSEL with the achievement of a maximum squeezing of 0.9 dB. Finally the future trends, the applications and the limitations of these non-classical states of light with respect to metrology applications are discussed.

Quantum noise and polarization properties of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Jean-Luc C. Vey, Christian Degen, Karsten Auen +1 more

We present theoretical and experimental results on the quantum noise performances of vertical-cavity-surface-emitting-lasers (VCSELs). Using a semiclassical laser noise approach, we demonstrate that the ratio $M=\overline{S}/\overline{P}$ of the powers in the two polarization modes of the laser is one of the essential parameters governing the VCSELs quantum noise behavior. The generation of amplitude squeezed states of light is only possible for two well-selected cases which are the ideal two-polarization-mode laser $(M\ensuremath{\approx}1)$ and the ideal single-polarization-mode laser $(M\ensuremath{\approx}0),$ respectively. Furthermore, we show that gain suppression, as well as other relevant semiconductor parameters, have also to be taken into account to model realistically the VCSEL's quantum noise. These theoretical investigations are very well supported by our experimental results. We demonstrate experimentally that indeed there exists a direct link between the parameter M and the shot noise normalized amplitude noise. In a two-polarization-mode laser as, e.g., represented by a large diameter air-post VCSEL, squeezed states could not be generated because of insufficiently low values of M even though a strong anticorrelation between the two modes exists. With a single-polarization-mode laser, as realized with small diameter oxide confined VCSELs, we have been able to demonstrate the generation of single-mode squeezed light with a VCSEL. A squeezing level of 0.9 dB has been measured, which with the detection efficiency corrected, results in 1.3 dB at the VCSEL upper facet.

Quantum spin-flip model of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Jean‐Pierre Hermier, Mikhail I. Kolobov, Isabelle Maurin +1 more

We present a theoretical and experimental investigation of quantum fluctuations in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) having one longitudinal and transverse linearly polarized mode above threshold. We develop the quantum version of the broadly used four-level spin-flip model to take into account the quantum statistics of the pumping process of the active atoms. Our theory allows for arbitrary pumping statistics varying from Poissonian to regular. We compare experimental results obtained with single-mode VCSELs with predictions of our theory and find very good agreement. We demonstrate that the quantum fluctuations of the subthreshold field component polarized orthogonally to the lasing mode have to be taken into account for adequate description of quantum fluctuations in VCSELs. In particular, we show that when the laser light passes through a polarizer, the two orthogonal polarization components of the light wave after passing through the polarizer can be strongly anticorrelated.

Bistable output of an optically pumped vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser

Matthew J. Bohn, John Gerard McInerney

We report optically bistable output of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The GaAs–AlGaAs VCSEL was optically pumped with a cw Ti:sapphire laser that was tuned near a cavity resonance of the VCSEL. Using a simple Fabry–Perot model, we demonstrate that the bistability is primarily dispersive and not absorptive. Although the threshold power is high because of poor sample quality, the contrast is very large; in fact, it approaches infinity.

Polarization squeezing in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Yu. M. Golubev, T. Yu. Golubeva, Mikhail I. Kolobov +1 more

We further elaborate the theory of quantum fluctuations in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL's), developed by [Hermier et al. Phys. Rev. A 65, 053825 (2002)]. In particular, we introduce quantum Stokes parameters to describe the quantum self-correlations and cross correlations between two polarization components of the electromagnetic field generated by this type of laser. We calculate analytically the fluctuation spectra of these parameters and discuss experiments in which they can be measured. We demonstrate that in certain situations VCSEL's can exhibit polarization squeezing over some range of spectral frequencies. This polarization squeezing has its origin in sub-Poissonian pumping statistics of the active laser medium.

Theoretical study on phase conjugation in weakly injected vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Zhang Wei-Li, Wei Pan, Luo Bin +3 more

This paper gives a detailed theoretical investigation on phase conjugation induced by nearly degenerate four-wave mixing in single mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with weak optical injection. Considering VCSELs that can work in linearly polarized or elliptically polarized states, it derives the theoretical expression of the conjugated field by small signal analysis based on the vectoral rate equations—the spin-flip model. For linearly polarized state, VCSELs show similar conjugate spectra to edge-emitting semiconductor lasers. For the elliptically polarized state, dichroism and birefringence parameters as well as the spin-flip rate can change the conjugate spectra. Especially, when frequency detuning of the probe and pump waves is between the positive and negative relaxation oscillation frequency, changes are evident. For specific values of parameters, conjugate efficiency between 20dB to 40dB are obtained.
