An Application of the Extended Global SO(3) × SO(3) × U(1) Symmetry of the Hubbard Model on a Square Lattice: The Spinon, η-Spinon, and c Fermion Description

J. M. P. Carmelo, M. J. Sampaio

In this paper we review recent results on the preliminary applications of the new-found extended global SO(3) × SO(3) × U(1) symmetry of the Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice. Our results refer to the particular case of the bipartite square lattice. Specifically, we review a general description for such a model with nearest-neighbor transfer integral t and on-site repulsion U on a square lattice with N2a 1 sites consistent with its extended global symmetry. It refers to three types of elementary objects whose occupancy configurations generate the state representations of the model extended global symmetry. Such objects emerge from a suitable electron-rotated-electron unitary transformation. An application to the spin spectrum of the parent compound La2CuO4 is shortly reviewed.

d-wave superconductivity in the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid

J. M. P. Carmelo

We find evidence that for zero spin density $m=0$, intermediate $U/4t$ values, and a range $x\in (x_c,x_*)$ of finite hole concentrations the ground state of the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid obtained from perturbing the square-lattice quantum liquid of Ref. \cite{companion2} by weak three-dimensional (3D) uniaxial anisotropy and intrinsic disorder has long-range d-wave superconducting order. Here $t$ is the effective nearest-neighbor transfer integral and $U$ the effective on-site repulsion. The long-range d-wave superconducting order emerges below a critical temperature $T_c$ for a hole concentration range centered at $x_{op}= (x_c+x_*)/2$. It results from the effects of the residual interactions of the charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral two-spinon $s1$ fermions of Ref. \cite{companion2}, as a by-product of the short-range spin correlations. Rather than the U(1) symmetry contained in the $η$-spin SU(2) symmetry of the $SO(4) = [SU(2)\times SU(2)]/Z_2$ symmetry, the U(1) symmetry broken at $T_c$ is the $c$ fermion U(1) symmetry of Ref. \cite{bipartite}. It is contained in the extended global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)=[SO(4)\times U(1)]/Z_2$ symmetry of the Hubbard model on the square lattice. Our preliminary results seem to indicate that combining the electronic correlations described by the square-lattice quantum liquid perturbed by 3D uniaxial anisotropy with the very weak effects of intrinsic disorder or superfluid-density anisotropy leads for the hole-concentration range $x\in (x_c,x_*)$ to a successful description of the universal properties of the hole-doped cuprate superconductors.

Fermion bag study of the two-dimensional Majorana-Hubbard model at finite hopping

Mark Johnston, Emilie Huffman

The two-dimensional Majorana-Hubbard model on the $π$-flux lattice involves the most local interaction possible for a lattice with one relativistic Majorana fermion per site. It is predicted to host a Majorana semimetal, dimerized phases, and quantum-critical points with an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry. Nonperturbative lattice calculations for this model remain a major open challenge, thus far limited to zero hopping. We present quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the model at finite hopping using Hamiltonian fermion bags, which are based on a continuous-time expansion with Boltzmann weights that are Pfaffians of a matrix with dimension set by the expansion order, and which give the sign of the weight. Sign problem severity is related to the location of zero modes in the free hopping matrix, and for couplings $g\lesssim 0.7$ and $β=L/4$ it is fully removed for lattices up to at least $256$ sites. The interaction strength $g>0$ enhances the $U(1)$-charged dimerization doublet and suppresses the neutral channel, as the renormalization group predicts. Increasing the interactions also restores $U(1)$ symmetry in the component of the dimerization correlator that is even under bond orientation exchange, but not its odd component. There is a persistent anisotropy in the odd component with the symmetry of a lattice nematic. The data is consistent with a gapless semimetal throughout the sign-problem-minimal window.
