The coupling of single-photon exciton–biexciton quantum dot and cavity

Abstract

We investigate the influence of multiple excitons on the photon emission properties of a quantum dot (QD)-cavity system via the master equation for the density matrix. We show that in the intermediate to strong coupling regimes, the multiple excitons lead to the suppressed QD emissions as well as the absence of anti-crossing near zero detuning, arising from the interaction between the multiple excitons and cavity. Furthermore, we analyze the role of the cavity-biexciton detuning in the photon emission properties of cavity and exciton through the second-order correlation function. The small cavity-biexciton detuning yields the significant Purcell effect and the high probability of single photon emissions. The proposed model offers the fundamental approach in developing efficient single-photon emitting devices.

Polarization-entangled twin photons from two-photon quantum-dot emission

Dirk Heinze, A. Zrenner, Stefan Schumacher

Semiconductor quantum dots are promising sources for polarization-entangled photons. As an alternative to the usual cascaded biexciton-exciton emission, direct two-photon emission from the biexciton can be used. With a high-quality optical resonator tuned to half the biexciton energy, a large proportion of the photons can be steered into the two-photon emission channel. In this case the degree of polarization entanglement is inherently insensitive to the exciton fine-structure splitting. In the present work we analyze the biexciton emission with particular emphasis on the influence of coupling of the quantum-dot cavity system to its environment. Especially for a high-quality cavity, the coupling to the surrounding semiconductor material can open up additional phonon-assisted decay channels. Our analysis demonstrates that with the cavity tuned to half the biexciton energy, the potentially detrimental influence of the phonons on the polarization entanglement is strongly suppressed---high degrees of entanglement can still be achieved. We further discuss spectral properties and statistics of the emitted twin photons.

Two-photon emission in coupled biexciton quantum dot—cavity system: Phonon-assisted model

Yiwei Peng, Zhongyuan Yu, Yumin Liu +2 more

We theoretically analyze the steady state emission spectrum and transient temporal dynamics in a coupled biexciton quantum dot (QD)—cavity system. For steady state, a phonon-assisted biexciton—exciton cascade model under continuous wave (CW) excitation is presented to explain the asymmetric QD—cavity emission spectrum intensities (intensities of cavity, exciton, and biexciton emission peak) in off-resonance condition. Results demonstrate that the electron—phonon process is crucial to the asymmetry of emission spectrum intensity. Moreover the transient characteristics of the biexciton—exciton cascade system under pulse excitation show abundant nonlinear temporal dynamic behaviors, including complicated oscillations which are caused by the four-level structure of QD model. We also reveal that under off-resonance condition the cavity outputs are slightly reduced due to the electron—phonon interaction.

Photon antibunching in strongly coupled exciton–semiconductor cavity systems: Role of off-resonant coupling to multiple excitons

E. Illes, Stephen Hughes

We present a master equation approach to study the second-order quantum autocorrelation functions for up to two quantum-dot excitons, coupled to an off-resonant cavity in a semiconductor-single quantum-dot cavity system. For a single coupled off-resonant exciton, we observe unusual oscillatory behavior in the early time dynamics of the cavity autocorrelation function, which leads to decreased antibunching relative to the exciton mode. With a second coupled exciton in the system, we find that the magnitude and the lifetime of these oscillations greatly increases, since the cavity is then able to exchange photons with multiple excitonic resonances. These results demonstrate that for incoherent pumping, the ubiquitous two-level atom model completely breaks down and that multiple excitonic resonances act in concert to spoil the antibunching characteristics of the cavity quasimode. We connect these findings to a series of recent surprising experimental results for single quantum dot-semiconductor cavity systems, including photonic crystal systems and micropillar cavities.

Cavity QED effects with single quantum dots

A single quantum dot embedded in a photonic crystal defect cavity allows for the investigation of cavity quantum electrodynamics effects in a solid-state environment. We present experiments demonstrating the quantum nature of this fundamental system in the strong coupling regime. Photon correlation measurements are used to characterize the fundamental properties of this unique system: through these experiments, we identify an unexpected, efficient sustaining mechanism that ensures strong cavity emission and is quantum correlated with the exciton resonance, even when all the quantum dot resonances are far detuned from the cavity mode.

Cavity-enhanced simultaneous dressing of quantum dot exciton and biexciton states

Fabian Hargart, Markus A. Müller, Kaushik Roy‐Choudhury +6 more

We demonstrate the simultaneous dressing of both vacuum-to-exciton and exciton-to-biexciton transitions of a single semiconductor quantum dot in a high-Q micropillar cavity, using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Resonant two-photon excitation of the biexciton is achieved by spectrally tuning the quantum dot emission with respect to the cavity mode. The cavity couples to both transitions and amplifies the Rabi frequency of the likewise resonant continuous wave laser, driving the transitions. We observe strong-field splitting of the emission lines, which depend on the driving Rabi field amplitude and the cavity-laser detuning. A dressed state theory of a driven 4-level atom correctly predicts the distinct spectral transitions observed in the emission spectrum, and a detailed description of the emission spectra is further provided through a polaron master equation approach which accounts for cavity coupling and acoustic phonon interactions of the semiconductor medium.

Multi-Photon Lasing Phenomena in Quantum Dot-Cavity QED

Lavakumar Addepalli

Multi-photon lasing has been realized in systems with strong nonlinear interactions between emitters and cavity modes, where single-photon processes are suppressed. Coherence between the internal states of a quantum emitter, or among multiple emitters, plays a key role. Such continuous nonclassical sources of light can find applications in quantum computation, quantum sensing, quantum metrology, and quantum communication. This thesis explores the multi-photon lasing phenomena in various quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity quantum electrodynamic (QED) setups. Exciton-phonon interactions are inevitable in such systems and are incorporated using the polaron-transformed master equation. The Born-Markov approximation is employed to obtain the reduced density matrix rate equation. Using quantum laser theory, we derived the Scully-Lamb laser rate equations and evaluated the single- and multi-photon excess emission rates defined as the difference between emission and absorption rates into the cavity mode without mean-field approximations. We investigated cooperative two-photon lasing, correlated emission lasing, hyperradiant lasing, non-degenerate two-mode two-photon lasing, and continuous variable entanglement in open quantum systems with single or multiple semiconductor quantum dots (two-level, three-level, and four-level) driven coherently/incoherently and coupled to single/ bimodal cavities.
