Abstract

Abstract We develop a wave‐function‐based method for the simulation of quantum dynamics of systems with many degrees of freedom at finite temperature. The method is inspired by the ideas of Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD). As TFD, our method is based on the doubling of the system's degrees of freedom and thermal Bogoliubov transformation. As distinct from TFD, our method implements the doubling of thermalized degrees of freedom only, and relies upon the explicitly constructed generalized thermal Bogoliubov transformation, which is not restricted to fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom. This renders the present approach computationally efficient and applicable to a large variety of systems.

Thermal Bogoliubov transformation in nuclear structure theory

A. I. Vdovin, A. A. Dzhioev

Thermal Bogoliubov transformation is an essential ingredient of the thermo field dynamics—the real time formalism in quantum field and many-body theories at finite temperatures developed by H. Umezawa and coworkers. The approach to study properties of hot nuclei which is based on the extension of the well-known Quasiparticle-Phonon Model to finite temperatures employing the TFD formalism is presented. A distinctive feature of the QPM-TFD combination is a possibility to go beyond the standard approximations like the thermal Hartree-Fock or the thermal RPA ones.

Finite temperature quantum dynamics of complex systems: Integrating thermo‐field theories and tensor‐train methods

Raffaele Borrelli, Maxim F. Gelin

Abstract This review provides the fundamental theoretical tools for the development of a complete wave‐function formalism for the study of time‐evolution of chemico‐physical systems at finite temperature. The methodology is based on the non‐equilibrium thermo‐field dynamics (NE‐TFD) representation of quantum mechanics, which is alternative to the commonly used density matrix representation. TFD concepts are extended and integrated with the tensor‐train (TT) numerical tools leading to a novel and powerful theoretical and computational framework for the study of complex quantum dynamical problems. In addition, NE‐TFD techniques are extended to enable the study of dissipative open systems via a new formulation of the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) fully integrated with TT methodologies. We demonstrate that the combination of the TFD machinery with computational advantages of TTs results in a powerful theoretical and computational framework for scrutinizing dynamics of complex multidimensional electron‐vibrational systems. We illustrate the validity and the computational advantages of the developed methodologies by applying them to the study of quantum coherence effects in the energy‐transfer processes in antenna systems, to the analysis of fingerprints of vibrational modes in electron‐transfer and charge‐transfer processes in various model and realistic multidimensional molecular systems, as well as to simulation of other fundamental models of physical chemistry. A Generalized Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator at Finite Temperature

Hiroki Majima

We show how a generalized time‐dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) is extended to a finite temperature case by using thermo field dynamics (TFD). We derive the general time‐dependent annihilation and creation operators for the system, and obtain the time‐dependent quasiparticle annihilation and creation operators for the GTHO by using the temperature‐dependent Bogoliubov transformation of TFD. We also obtain the thermal state as a two‐mode squeezed vacuum state in the time‐dependent case as well as in the time‐independent case. The general formula is derived to calculate the thermal expectation value of operators.

A thermofield-based multilayer multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree approach to non-adiabatic quantum dynamics at finite temperature

Eric W. Fischer, Peter Saalfrank

We introduce a thermofield-based formulation of the multilayer multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method to study finite temperature effects on non-adiabatic quantum dynamics from a non-stochastic, wave function perspective. Our approach is based on the formal equivalence of bosonic many-body theory at zero temperature with a doubled number of degrees of freedom and the thermal quasi-particle representation of bosonic thermofield dynamics (TFD). This equivalence allows for a transfer of bosonic many-body MCTDH as introduced by Wang and Thoss to the finite temperature framework of thermal quasi-particle TFD. As an application, we study temperature effects on the ultrafast internal conversion dynamics in pyrazine. We show that finite temperature effects can be efficiently accounted for in the construction of multilayer expansions of thermofield states in the framework presented herein. Furthermore, we find our results to agree well with existing studies on the pyrazine model based on the ρMCTDH method.
