Fundamentals of Optics

Publisher

Abstract

J. R. Klauder and E. C. G. Sudarshan New York: W. A. Benjamin. 1968 Pp. xi + 279. Price $15–50. This book is one of the first to appear on the new activity in optical coherence theory stimulated by the advent of the laser. The authors are well known for their original work in the subject; they have been particularly concerned with the development of formalism for the description of an arbitrary free field in a 'classical like' form or 'diagonal representation'.

Coherence of Light

Edward R. Pike

J Perina London: Van Nostrand 1972 pp 315 price £6 This book brings under one cover in a clear presentation much of a stream of work which has appeared in the literature over the last decade or so, concerned with the interrelation between classical and quantum theories of optical coherence. Only in the 11th of 18 chapters, however, is the optical field quantized so that there is at first a very extensive treatment of classical results.

Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics – Particles, Waves and Wave Mechanics

Edward J. Burge

S. Borowitz New York: W. A. Benjamin. 1967 Pp. xiv + 401. Price $13.90. The introduction of the Hamiltonian to students is made in a variety of ways and at different levels, and for many the first mention is in connexion with wave mechanics. This volume, however, sets out to provide a thorough understanding of the basic concepts and methods of wave theory, of the variational principles in optics and of Hamiltonian mechanics, before the introduction of wave mechanics.

Optical Coherence and Quantum Optics

L. Mandeļ, E. Wolf

This book presents a systematic account of optical coherence theory within the framework of classical optics, as applied to such topics as radiation from sources of different states of coherence, foundations of radiometry, effects of source coherence on the spectra of radiated fields, coherence theory of laser modes, and scattering of partially coherent light by random media. The book starts with a full mathematical introduction to the subject area and each chapter concludes with a set of exercises. The authors are renowned scientists and have made substantial contributions to many of the topics treated in the book. Much of the book is based on courses given by them at universities, scientific meetings and laboratories throughout the world. This book will undoubtedly become an indispensable aid to scientists and engineers concerned with modern optics, as well as to teachers and graduate students of physics and engineering.

Intermediate Quantum Mechanics 2nd Edn

Ken J. Barnes

H A Bethe and B Jackiw New York: Benjamin 1968 pp ix + 393, price $11.00 This book is designed to meet the needs of students working through a second course of quantum mechanics. It is not a textbook on the fundamental theory, but is rather a down to earth treatment of the main applications to atomic physics.

Coherent States

Christopher C. Gerry, P. L. Knight

This established textbook provides an accessible but comprehensive introduction to the quantum nature of light and its interaction with matter. The field of quantum optics is covered with clarity and depth, from the underlying theoretical framework of field quantization, atom–field interactions, and quantum coherence theory, to important and modern applications at the forefront of current research such as quantum interferometry, squeezed light, quantum entanglement, cavity quantum electrodynamics, laser-cooled trapped ions, and quantum information processing. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and would be an ideal main text for a course on quantum optics. This long-awaited second edition builds upon the success of the first edition, including many new developments in the field, particularly in the area of quantum state engineering. Additional homework problems have been added, and content from the first edition has been updated and clarified throughout.
