Abstract

One of the important code of modern coding theory, the protograph LDPC code technology has been gained more and more attention due to its low encoding complexity, fast decoding speed, low BER, and simple optimization analysis process etc. the quasi-cyclic expansion algorithm of the protograph LDPC codes, named as PQCE algorithms, can complete the extension of protograph and eventually get the protograph LDPC codes. However, the existing PQCE algorithms may be with a low convergence rate, or exist many short cycles in the check matrix. To solve the above problem, a Quasi-cyclic expansion algorithm for protograph LDPC codes based on PEG and PH is proposed in this paper, referred as PEG-PH-PQCE algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, base matrix is acquired by PEG parallel edges elimination expansion algorithm during the first-step expansion of protograph. Then, the second-step expansion is completed, in which the initial index matrix is obtained by PEG quasi-cyclic expansion algorithm, and the check matrix is acquired by using the Hill Climbing algorithm to optimizing the initial index matrix. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness the validity of the proposed algorithm, such as, a small number of short cycles and high convergence rate, etc.

Optimized Construction of Short and High Rate Protograph QC-LDPC Codes

Jianrong Bao, Xiaorong Xu, Chao Liu +2 more

To obtain efficient and pragmatic channel codes high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), an optimized construction of short and high rate protograph quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is presented. Based on an optimized protograph template, the code framework is firstly produced by the extensions of the variable nodes. By enlarging the dimension of the sub-matrices related to the protograph framework, the base quasi-cyclic (QC) matrix is generated with required code rate and length. Then, the elements in the base matrix are split with even smaller square sub-matrices of the same row and column weights. In this procedure, a progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm is employed to find the optimized positions of the QC submatrices, which brings larger girth for better code performance. Also the circulant offsets in all QC sub-matrices are optimally searched by a QC improved approximated cycle extrinsic message degree (QCI-ACE) algorithm, which improves the relationship of the unavoidable loops in the code's Tanner graph and thus it improves the error floor. Simulation results show that the codes produced by the proposed method demonstrate quite good bit error rate (BER) performance. In addition, they exhibit good properties of high spectrum efficiency by the high code rate, as well as the low complexity by the short code length. Therefore, the proposed code construction can be efficiently applied in the design of short and high rate protograph QC-LDPC codes with high rate and rational complexity.

Modified PEG algorithm for large girth Quasi-cyclic protograph LDPC codes

Xueqin Jiang, Moon Ho Lee, Hui-Ming Wang +2 more

For a given base graph, the protograph can be obtained by a copy-and-permute procedure. If the permutation is cyclic, the protograph corresponds to a quasi-cyclic (QC) protograph LDPC code. The girth of the QC protograph LDPC code is determined by the girth of the base graph and the permutation shifts. Progressive edge-growth (PEG) construction builds up a Tanner graph, or equivalently a parity-check matrix, for an LDPC code by maximizing the local girth at symbol nodes in a greedy algorithm. In this paper, we introduce a modified version of the PEG algorithm which can construct large girth base graph and determine the optimal permutation shifts, simultaneously, for QC protograph LDPC codes. Simulation results show that the QC protograph LDPC codes constructed by the proposed modified PEG algorithm have good frame error rate (FER) performance over the AWGN channel.

Quasi-cyclic expansion and encoding algorithms for protograph LDPC codes

Zhongliang Li, Guojiang Xia

Recently, a new class of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes constructed from a template was introduced. This kind of codes were called protograph codes. The protograph serves as a blueprint for constructing LDPC codes of arbitrary size whose performance can be predicted by analyzing the protograph. Protograph LDPC codes perform very well and suit for high-speed encoding and decoding. However, there are few researches on expansion and encoding algorithms for them. In this paper, using isomorphism between matrix ring and polynomial ring, we propose efficient quasi-cyclic expansion and encoding algorithms for protograph LDPC codes. Simulation results show that the protograph LDPC codes which were constructed by the algorithm proposed in this paper, outperform the best known unstructured irregular LDPC codes with the same maximum node degrees.

An improved algorithm for constructing QC-LDPC codes based on the PEG algorithm

Zhiyong Fan, Weibo Zhang, Xingcheng Liu +1 more

The Progressive edge-growth (PEG) algorithm was proven to be a simple and effective approach in designing Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. However, the Tanner graph constructed with the PEG algorithm is non-structured, which leads to random distributions of the positions of 1's in the corresponding parity-check matrix. In this paper, an improved algorithm based on the PEG algorithm for constructing quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed algorithm can eliminate short cycles efficiently and gain low error-floors. What is more important, the proposed QC-LDPC codes construction method is hardware-friendly because of its quasi-cyclic structure. Our simulation results demonstrate that the codes constructed with the proposed algorithm has better performance than the PEG algorithm over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and Rayleigh flat fading channel.

An Improved Construction Method of QC-LDPC Codes Based on the PEG Algorithm

Liqun Huang, Yuliang Wang, Ping Gong

Due to quasi-cyclic structure of parity-check matrices, Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes reduce hardware requirements, and thus they have a higher practical value than random LDPC codes. This paper proposes an improved construction method of QC-LDPC based on PEG Algorithm, and the girth of the QC-LDPC codes has an increase of 2. Firstly, a base matrix is generated by the PEG algorithm, and then the base matrix is expanded using the unit circle permutation matrix, at the same time, the short loop of the base matrix is eliminated. This approach has the advantages of the PEG algorithm and the QC-LDPC codes, and simulation results show that bit error rate (BER) performance of the QC-LDPC codes presented in this paper is the same as or exceeds the one of randomly constructed LDPC codes.

A Method for Constructing Quasi-Cycle Extension LDPC Codes with Low Encoding Complexity

Wei Li

Progressive-Edge-Growth(PEG) algorithm is an efficient method for constructing LDPC codes with short and intermediate block lengths. However, the complexity of codes produced directly by this algorithm is proportional to quadratic length of the codes, which restricts the implementation of the LDPC codes. To solve the problem,a method was proposed for constructing quasi-cycle extension LDPC codes with low encoding complexity and good error performance.Based on PEG algorithm,a base matrix with an approximate lower triangular was constructed, then all its elements were replaced by circulation permutations. The new method could eliminate the short cycles effectively without changing the degree distribution fraction of the basic matrix. The simulation results show that: compared with LDPC codes generated by PEG algorithm, the LDPC codes presented here have lower encoding complexity and better error performance, which is easy for implementation with hardware.
