Abstract

We consider scale transformations (q, p) → (λq, λp) in phase space. They induce transformations of the Husimi functions H(q, p) defined in this space. We consider the Husimi functions for states that are arbitrary superpositions of n-particle states of a harmonic oscillator. We develop a method that allows finding so-called stretched states to which these superpositions transform under such a scale transformation. We study the properties of the stretched states and calculate their density matrices in explicit form. We establish that the density matrix structure can be described using negative binomial distributions. We find expressions for the energy and entropy of stretched states and calculate the means of the number-ofstates operator. We give the form of the Heisenberg and Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relations for stretched states.

Some properties of the Husimi function

John E. Harriman

The Husimi function provides a phase-space view of quantum systems. This paper considers a number of its properties, including ways in which it can be expanded in terms of basis functions. A spectral or ‘‘natural’’ expansion and an expansion analogous to the Carlson–Keller expansion in terms of coordinate-density momentum-density products are considered, as is a method for separating the angular dependence of the momentum. There is a set of functions in phase space having the same overlap properties as the initial orbital basis in terms of which the charge density matrix is expressed. A Husimi matrix is defined and a scalar product in the space containing such matrices as elements is introduced. The connection with the vector space of density matrices is examined. The Husimi function is related to the Husimi matrix in a way analogous to the relationship between a density matrix and a density, but there is a major difference in that this map can always be inverted. For a harmonic oscillator basis the phase space basis functions, in terms of which the Husimi function is expressed, span a linear space but do not provide a complete set; their products provide a linearly independent set that is complete. It is suggested that similar behavior can be expected for other basis sets.

The Wigner function of aq-deformed harmonic oscillator model

E I Jafarov, S Lievens, S M Nagiyev +1 more

The phase space representation for a q -deformed model of the quantum harmonic oscillator is constructed. We have found explicit expressions for both the Wigner and Husimi distribution functions for the stationary states of the q -oscillator model under consideration. The Wigner function is expressed as a basic hypergeometric series, related to the Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials. It is shown that, in the limit case h → 0 ( q → 1), both the Wigner and Husimi distribution functions reduce correctly to their well-known non-relativistic analogues. Surprisingly, examination of both distribution functions in the q -deformed model shows that, when q ≪ 1, their behaviour in the phase space is similar to the ground state of the ordinary quantum oscillator, but with a displacement towards negative values of the momentum. We have also computed the mean values of the position and momentum using the Wigner function. Unlike the ordinary case, the mean value of the momentum is not zero and it depends on q and n . The ground-state-like behaviour of the distribution functions for excited states in the q -deformed model opens quite new perspectives for further experimental measurements of quantum systems in the phase space.

HARMONIC OSCILLATOR AND RELATED STATES WITH LARGE VALUE OF UNCERTAINTY

V. A. Andreev

A review is given of the properties of two types of quantum states, which have great uncertainty in the coordinate and momentum. Both are obtained from the states of a harmonic oscillator by means of certain transformations. The first type is correlated states, they are obtained from coherent states with a help of the Bogolyubov transform. The variances of the coordinate and momentum of such a state depend on the Bogolyubov transform parameters and can, in general, take arbitrarily large values.Their specific values are determined by the physical processes with which the Bogolyubov transform is realized.A concrete example of such physical process is considered.Another type are stretched states.Formally, they arise when the n-partial state of a harmonic oscillator undergoes a transform associated with a scale transformation of the phase space. The dispersion of the coordinate and momentum of these states depends on the scale transformation parameter and can also take arbitrarily large values.Physically stretched states can be obtained by passing n-photon states through a quantum amplifier. The role of the scale transformation of the phase space is played by the gain of the quantum amplifier.

The Husimi distribution function and superposition of q-harmonic oscillator stationary states

Natig M. Atakishiyev, E. I. Jafarov, A. M. Jafarova +1 more

We study a superposition of four stationary states of the q-deformed quantum harmonic oscillator in phase space, through the Husimi quasi-distribution function. This function is analytically computed and it consists of 16 parts, which are explicitly given in terms of q-shifted factorials. Our results are consistent with the known observation that the smoothing of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution through a filter of a size larger than h-bar restricts the appearance of any sub-Planck structures when q -> 0.

Husimi representation for stationary states

John E. Harriman, Mark E. Casida

Abstract This paper considers a Husimi representation of quantum mechanics in which the (stationary) state of a system or ensemble is described by a Husimi function and an observable is described by a phase space function or distribution such that the expectation value of the observable is given by an integral over phase space of the product of that function or distribution and the Husimi function. The density matrix, Wigner function, and Husimi function are considered to be alternative ways of describing the state of a system or ensemble, and methods of recovering the Wigner function or density matrix from the Husimi function are discussed. The classical limits of the Wigner and Husimi functions and of the relationship between them are considered. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Symmetry Transformation in Extended Phase Space: the Harmonic Oscillator in the Husimi Representation

Samira Bahrami

In a previous work the concept of quantum potential is generalized into extended phase space (EPS) for a particle in linear and harmonic potentials. It was shown there that in contrast to the Schrödinger quantum mechanics by an appropriate extended canonical transformation one can obtain the Wigner representation of phase space quantum mechanics in which the quantum potential is removed from dynamical equation. In other words, one still has the form invariance of the ordinary Hamilton-Jacobi equation in this representation. The situation, mathematically, is similar to the disappearance of the centrifugal potential in going from the spherical to the Cartesian coordinates. Here we show that the Husimi representation is another possible representation where the quantum potential for the harmonic potential disappears and the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation reduces to the familiar classical form. This happens when the parameter in the Husimi transformation assumes a specific value corresponding to Q-function.
