Magnetic Field-Induced Spectroscopy of Forbidden Optical Transitions with Application to Lattice-Based Optical Atomic Clocks

А. В. Тайченачев, Valeriy I. Yudin, Chris W. Oates +3 more

We develop a method of spectroscopy that uses a weak static magnetic field to enable direct optical excitation of forbidden electric-dipole transitions that are otherwise prohibitively weak. The power of this scheme is demonstrated using the important application of optical atomic clocks based on neutral atoms confined to an optical lattice. The simple experimental implementation of this method--a single clock laser combined with a dc magnetic field--relaxes stringent requirements in current lattice-based clocks (e.g., magnetic field shielding and light polarization), and could therefore expedite the realization of the extraordinary performance level predicted for these clocks. We estimate that a clock using alkaline-earth-like atoms such as Yb could achieve a fractional frequency uncertainty of well below 10(-17) for the metrologically preferred even isotopes.

First spectroscopy of the 1S0 →3P0 transition in Lamb-Dicke confined magnesium atoms

A. P. Kulosa, Steffen Rühmann, Klaus Zipfel +4 more

104magnesium atoms have been trapped in an optical lattice at the predicted magic wavelength of 469 nm. The trap depth of the lattice sites is 16 Ercorresponding to a Lamb-Dicke parameter of η = 0.51. The temperature of atoms in the lattice is 10 μK. We performed magnetic field-induced spectroscopy on the strongly spin-forbidden clock transition and observed for the first time a 50 kHz broad carrier signal together with a 80 kHz broad red sideband.

Spektroskopie des 1S0 → 3P0 Uhrenübergangs von 24Mg in einem optischen Gitter bei der vorhergesagten magischen Wellenlänge

Temmo Wübbena

As the 1 S 0 → 3 P 0 clock transition of 24 Mg is a J = 0 → J = 0 transition, it is forbidden for single photon processes. Therefore, magnetic field induced spectroscopy was performed. In this spectroscopy method, the 3 P 0 state is coupled to the 3 P 1 state by a magnetic field, whereby the clock transition becomes weakly allowed.Using this method it was possible to de-excite 25 % of the atoms trapped in the optical lattice in the 3 P 0 state via the clock transition.
