Observation of the Pairing Gap in a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas

Cheng Chin, M. Bartenstein, A. Altmeyer +4 more

We studied fermionic pairing in an ultracold two-component gas of 6Li atoms by observing an energy gap in the radio-frequency excitation spectra. With control of the two-body interactions through a Feshbach resonance, we demonstrated the dependence of the pairing gap on coupling strength, temperature, and Fermi energy. The appearance of an energy gap with moderate evaporative cooling suggests that our full evaporation brought the strongly interacting system deep into a superfluid state.

Evolution of the Normal State of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas from a Pseudogap Phase to a Molecular Bose Gas

Andrea Perali, F. Palestini, P. Pieri +5 more

Wave-vector resolved radio frequency spectroscopy data for an ultracold trapped Fermi gas are reported for several couplings at T(c), and extensively analyzed in terms of a pairing-fluctuation theory. We map the evolution of a strongly interacting Fermi gas from the pseudogap phase into a fully gapped molecular Bose gas as a function of the interaction strength, which is marked by a rapid disappearance of a remnant Fermi surface in the single-particle dispersion. We also show that our theory of a pseudogap phase is consistent with a recent experimental observation as well as with quantum Monte Carlo data of thermodynamic quantities of a unitary Fermi gas above T(c).

Spin-gap phenomenon in a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas

Hiroyuki Tajima, Ryo Hanai, Yoji Ohashi

We investigate magnetic properties of a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas. Within the framework of an extended T -matrix approximation, we calculate the spin susceptibility χ in the unitarity limit. We show that effects of pairing fluctuations on this magnetic quantity are quite different in between the normal state and the superfluid phase. In the normal state, pairing fluctuations cause spin-gap phenomenon near the superfluid phase transition temperature T c , where χ is anomalously suppressed. In the superfluid phase, on the other hand, the ordinary suppression of χ by the BCS energy gap is weakened by pairing fluctuations, because they induce finite density of states inside the gap. Our results indicate that the spin susceptibility is a useful quantity for the study of pairing fluctuations in the BCS-BEC crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas.
