Abstract

This paper studies a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system in which the transmitter not only sends data and energy to many types of wireless users, such as multiple information decoding users, multiple hybrid power-splitting users (i.e., users with a power-splitting structure to receive both information and energy), and multiple energy harvesting users, but also prevents information from being intercepted by a passive eavesdropper. The transmitter is equipped with multiple antennas, whereas all users and the eavesdropper are assumed to be equipped with a single antenna. Since the transmitter does not have any channel state information (CSI) about the eavesdropper, artificial noise (AN) power is maximized to mask information as well as to interfere with the eavesdropper as much as possible. The non-convex optimization problem is formulated to minimize the transmit power satisfying all signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) and harvested energy requirements for all users so that the remaining power for generating AN is maximized. With perfect CSI, a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique is applied, and the optimal solution is proven to be tight. With imperfect CSI, SDR and a Gaussian randomization algorithm are proposed to find the suboptimal solution. Finally, numerical performance with respect to the maximum SINR at the eavesdropper is determined by a Monte-Carlo simulation to compare the proposed AN scenario with a no-AN scenario, as well as to compare perfect CSI with imperfect CSI.

Max-min energy based robust secure beamforming for SWIPT

Muhammad R. A. Khandaker, Kai‐Kit Wong

This paper considers simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink systems in which a multi-antenna transmitter sends a secret message to a single-antenna information receiver (IR) and power to multiple single-antenna energy receivers (ERs) in presence of external eavesdroppers. We aim to maximize the harvested energy by the ERs while maintaining the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) threshold at the IR and keeping the message secure from possible eavesdropping by the malicious attackers by interfering their reception. Both scenarios of perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter are studied. Using semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques, we show that a rank-one optimal beamforming solution can always be constructed for the IR.

Robust Beamforming for AN Aided MISO SWIPT System with Unknown Eavesdroppers and Non-Linear EH Model

Miao Zhang, Kanapathippillai Cumanan, Lei Ni +3 more

This work studies a beamforming design for down-link transmission of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) system where each legitimate user employs a power splitting (PS) based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique. The transmitter intends to send confidential information to its legitimate users in the presence of purely unknown eavesdroppers. Since the transmitter does not have any knowledge of the eavesdroppers' channel state information (CSI), we consider an artificial noise (AN) approach to establishing secure communication. This beamforming design is developed by maximizing the AN power to interfere with the eavesdropper as much as possible. Based on the assumption of imperfect CSI of legitimate users at the transmitter, two robust design approaches for the joint beamforming and PS ratio have been studied to maximize the AN power under both energy harvesting (EH) and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirements at each legitimate user. In the first robust design, we consider the bounded channel uncertainties, and employ semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and a linear matrix inequality (LMI) representation to transform the original problem into a semidefinite program (SDP). In the second robust design, we consider the statistical channel uncertainties, and show that the proposed problem can be reformulated into another form of SDP through both SDR and Bernstein-type inequality. In addition, the non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model is incorporated in this work as it could reflect the characteristics of practical radio frequency(RF)-EH conversion circuit. Simulation results have been provided to demonstrate the performance of our proposed robust designs.

Robust Beamforming for Secure Communication in Systems With Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Derrick Wing Kwan Ng, Ernest Sze-Yuen Lo, Robert Schober

This paper considers a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. In particular, we focus on secure communication in the presence of passive eavesdroppers and potential eavesdroppers (idle legitimate receivers). We study the design of a resource allocation algorithm minimizing the total transmit power for the case when the legitimate receivers are able to harvest energy from radio frequency signals. Our design advocates the dual use of both artificial noise and energy signals in providing secure communication and facilitating efficient wireless energy transfer. The algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem. The problem formulation takes into account artificial noise and energy signal generation for protecting the transmitted information against both considered types of eavesdroppers when imperfect channel state information (CSI) of the potential eavesdroppers and no CSI of the passive eavesdroppers are available at the transmitter. Besides, the problem formulation also takes into account different quality of service (QoS) requirements: a minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the desired receiver; maximum tolerable SINRs at the potential eavesdroppers; a minimum required outage probability at the passive eavesdroppers; and minimum required heterogeneous amounts of power transferred to the idle legitimate receivers. In light of the intractability of the problem, we reformulate the considered problem by replacing a non-convex probabilistic constraint with a convex deterministic constraint. Then, a semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation approach is adopted to obtain the optimal solution for the reformulated problem. Furthermore, we propose a suboptimal resource allocation scheme with low computational complexity for providing communication secrecy and facilitating efficient energy transfer. Simulation results demonstrate the close-to-optimal performance of the proposed schemes and significant transmit power savings by optimization of the artificial noise and energy signal generation.

Secure Beamforming Design for SWIPT in MISO Broadcast Channel With Confidential Messages and External Eavesdroppers

Haiyang Zhang, Yongming Huang, Chunguo Li +1 more

This paper studies the secure beamforming design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in a multiple-input single-output broadcast channel with confidential messages and external eavesdroppers, where each receiver adopts the power splitting (PS) scheme to decode information and harvest energy concurrently, and it is also seen as a potential eavesdropper for messages not intended for it. Our objective is to minimize the total transmit power while guaranteeing the individual secrecy rate and energy harvesting constraints at each receiver by jointly optimizing transmit beamforming vectors, artificial noise covariance, and receive PS ratios. Both scenarios of perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter are considered. For the perfect CSI case, we propose a two-stage optimization approach to solve the original non-convex problem global optimality, and also provide a low-complexity suboptimal solution based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Furthermore, we also extend the above result to the colluding eavesdroppers scenario. For the imperfect CSI case, we propose a worst-case-based robust formulation, where the CSI errors are norm-bounded. With the aid of S-Procedure, we derive the equivalent forms for constraints and then transform the non-convex robust design into a convex optimization problem. Simulation results are finally presented to demonstrate the performance of our proposed schemes.
