Fulde-Ferrell-Like Molecular States in Spin-Orbit Coupled Ultracold Fermi Gases*

Abstract

Abstract We study the molecular state in three-component Fermi gases with a single impurity of 6 Li immersing in a no-interacting Fermi sea of 40 K in the presence of an equal weight combination of Rashba-type and Dresselhaus-type spin-orbit coupling. In the region where the Fermi sea has two disjointed Fermi surfaces, we find that there are two Fulde–Ferrell-like molecular states with dominating contributions from the lower helicity branch. Decreasing the scattering length or the spin-orbit coupled Fermi energy, we find the Fulde–Ferrell-like molecular state with small center-of-mass momentum is always energy favored and the other one will suddenly disappear.

Three-Component Ultracold Fermi Gases with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Lihong Zhou, Xiaoling Cui, Wei Yi

We investigate the pairing physics in a three-component Fermi-Fermi mixture, where a few fermionic impurities are immersed in a noninteracting two-component Fermi gas with synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and interact attractively with one spin species in the Fermi gas. Because of the interplay of SOC and the spin-selective interaction, the molecular state intrinsically acquires a nonzero center-of-mass momentum, which results in a new type of Fulde-Ferrell (FF) pairing in spin-orbit coupled Fermi systems. The existence of the Fermi sea can also lead to the competition between FF-like molecular states with different center-of-mass momenta, which corresponds to a first-order transition between FF phases in the thermodynamic limit. As the interaction strength is tuned, a polaron-molecule transition occurs in the highly imbalanced system, where the boundary varies nonmonotonically with SOC parameters and gives rise to the reentrance of polaron states. The rich physics in this system can be probed using existing experimental techniques.

Topological Fulde-Ferrell superfluid in spin-orbit-coupled atomic Fermi gases

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

We theoretically predict a topological matter---topological inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell superfluid---in one-dimensional atomic Fermi gases with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling near $s$-wave Feshbach resonances. The realization of such a spin-orbit-coupled Fermi system has already been demonstrated recently by using a two-photon Raman process and the extra one-dimensional confinement is easy to achieve using a tight two-dimensional optical lattice. The topological Fulde-Ferrell superfluid phase is characterized by a nonzero center-of-mass momentum and a nontrivial Berry phase. By tuning the Rabi frequency and the detuning of Raman laser beams, we show that such an exotic topological phase occupies a significant part of parameter space and therefore it could be easily observed experimentally, by using, for example, momentum-resolved and spatially resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy.

Three-component Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in a two-dimensional Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling

Fang Qin, Fan Wu, Wei Zhang +2 more

We investigate the pairing physics of a three-component spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas in two spatial dimensions. The three atomic hyperfine states of the system are coupled by the recently realized synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which mixes different hyperfine states into helicity branches in a momentum-dependent manner. As a consequence, the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and the hyperfine-state-dependent interactions leads to the emergence of Fulde-Ferrell (FF) pairing states with finite center-of-mass momenta even in the absence of the Fermi-surface asymmetry that is usually mandatory to stabilize an SOC-induced FF state. We show that, for different combinations of spin-dependent interactions, the ground state of the system can either be the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing state with zero center-of-mass momentum or be the FF pairing states. Of particular interest here is the existence of a three-component FF pairing state in which every two out of the three components form FF pairing. We map out the phase diagram of the system and characterize the properties of the three-component FF state, such as the order parameters, the gapless contours, and the momentum distributions. Based on these results, we discuss possible experimental detection schemes for the interesting pairing states in the system.

Fulde–Ferrell superfluidity in ultracold Fermi gases with Rashba spin–orbit coupling

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

We theoretically investigate the inhomogeneous Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluidity in a three-dimensional atomic Fermi gas with Rashba spin–orbit coupling near a broad Feshbach resonance. We show that within mean-field theory the FF superfluid state is always more favorable than the standard Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superfluid state when an in-plane Zeeman field is applied. We present a qualitative finite-temperature phase diagram near resonance and argue that the predicted FF superfluid is observable with experimentally attainable temperatures (i.e. T ∼ 0.2 T F , where T F is the characteristic Fermi degenerate temperature).

Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in an asymmetric three-component Fermi Gas

Yuhan Lu, Lihong Zhou, Yongping Zhang

An asymmetric three-component Fermi gas, featuring Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling between the first and second components and contact interaction only between the first and third components, introduces both spin-orbit coupling and population imbalance-two mechanisms known to stabilize the Fulde-Ferrell superfluids. We systematically study Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in an asymmetric three-component Fermi gas { in two dimensions and at zero temperature} by finding the global minima of the thermodynamic potential. We reveal a new class of composite Fulde-Ferrell superfluids that emerges when strong spin-orbit coupling generates a double-well structure in momentum space within the lower spin-orbit-coupled band. The key features of these composite superfluids are identified.

Exotic pairing states in a Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

Xiang-Fa Zhou, Guang‐Can Guo, Wei Zhang +1 more

We investigate properties of exotic pairing states in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. The interplay of spin-orbit coupling, effective Zeeman field, and pairing can lead to first-order phase transitions between different phases, and to interesting nodal superfluid states with gapless surfaces in the momentum space. We then demonstrate that pairing states with zero center-of-mass momentum are unstable against Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, with a finite center-of-mass momentum opposite to the direction of the effective Zeeman field. Unlike conventional FFLO states, these FFLO states are induced by the coexistence of spin-orbit coupling and Fermi surface deformation, and have intriguing features like first-order transitions between different FFLO states, nodal FFLO states with gapless surfaces in momentum space, and exotic fully gapped FFLO states. With the recent theoretical proposals for realizing three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases, our work is helpful for future experimental studies and provides valuable information for the general understanding of pairing physics in spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems.
