Abstract

Uncertainty relations are the hallmarks of quantum physics and have been widely investigated since its original formulation. To understand and quantitatively capture the essence of preparation uncertainty in quantum interference, the uncertainty relations for unitary operators need to be investigated. Here, we report the first experimental investigation of the uncertainty relations for general unitary operators. In particular, we experimentally demonstrate the uncertainty relation for general unitary operators proved by Bagchi and Pati [ Phys. Rev. A94, 042104 (2016)], which places a non-trivial lower bound on the sum of uncertainties and removes the triviality problem faced by the product of the uncertainties. The experimental findings agree with the predictions of quantum theory and respect the new uncertainty relation.

Experimental demonstration of strong unitary uncertainty relations

Dengke Qu, Kunkun Wang, Lei Xiao +2 more

Uncertainty relations are one of the most important foundations of quantum physics. In the textbook literatures, uncertainty relations usually refer to the preparation uncertainty. Its original formulation based on variances of two observables limits on the ability to prepare an ensemble of quantum systems for which non-commuting observables will have arbitrary uncertainty. The preparation uncertainty relation has been widely investigated. On the other hand, a unitary operator is a fundamental tenet of quantum theory. Every evolution of a closed quantum system is governed by acting unitary operators on the state of the system and the evolution of an open system can be represented by acting unitary operators on an enlarged system consisting of the quantum system as a subsystem. Therefore, naturally, to understand and quantitatively capture the essence of uncertainty relations for unitary operators is important and timely. Here we report an experimental investigation of a set of uncertainty relations for two unitary operators, which are theoretically derived by using a sequence of fine-grained inequalities. We test these uncertainty relations with single photons and interferometric networks. The unitary uncertainty relation is saturated by any pure qubit state. For higher-dimensional states, it is stronger than the best known bound introduced in the previous literatures. The lower bounds of the unitary uncertainty relations can be even further strengthened by the symmetry of permutation. The experimental findings agree with the predictions of quantum theory and respect the new uncertainty relations.

Tighter sum unitary uncertainty relation

Xia Zhang, Xue Wang, Haitao Ma +2 more

Abstract Unitary uncertainty relations provide a theoretical framework that enhances our understanding of the principles underlying quantum mechanics and its applications in quantum information science. In this study, we derive both the unitary uncertainty relation and the weighted unitary uncertainty relation based on the sum variance for arbitrary pairs of unitary operators. By applying the arithmetic geometric mean inequality, we obtain a lower bound that is tighter than the one provided by Bagchi and Pati. [Physical Review A 94,042104] for two unitary operators. To illustrate our results, we include examples of both the unitary uncertainty relation and the weighted uncertainty relation based on sum variance.

Uncertainty Relations of Non-Hermitian Operators: Theory and Experimental Scheme

Xinzhi Zhao, Chengjie Zhang

The theoretical framework for the uncertainty relation of Hermitian operators is perfect and has been applied in many fields. At the same time, non-Hermitian operators are also widely used in some other fields. However, the uncertainty relation of non-Hermitian operators remains to be explored. K.W. Bong and his co-workers proposed the theory of unitary uncertainty relation and verified it in the experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 230402 (2018)]. In this work, we generalized this unitary uncertainty relation theory and proposed uncertainty relations of non-Hermitian operators. Due to the difficulties in the direct measurement of non-Hermitian operators in the uncertainty relations, we simplified the uncertainty relation of two non-Hermitian operators with pure states and proposed a realizable experimental measurement scheme by using the Mach–Zehnder interferometer. When the two non-Hermitian operators are unitary, our result can reduce to Bong et al.’s result. Furthermore, for two non-Hermitian operators but not unitary, we obtained a generalized and analogous result of theirs.

Uncertainty relations for general unitary operators

Shrobona Bagchi, Arun Kumar Pati

We derive several uncertainty relations for two arbitrary unitary operators acting on physical states of a Hilbert space. We show that our bounds are tighter in various cases than the ones existing in the current literature. Using the uncertainty relation for the unitary operators, we obtain the tight state-independent lower bound for the uncertainty of two Pauli observables and anticommuting observables in higher dimensions. With regard to the minimum-uncertainty states, we derive the minimum-uncertainty state equation by the analytic method and relate this to the ground-state problem of the Harper Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the higher-dimensional limit of the uncertainty relations and minimum-uncertainty states are explored. From an operational point of view, we show that the uncertainty in the unitary operator is directly related to the visibility of quantum interference in an interferometer where one arm of the interferometer is affected by a unitary operator. This shows a principle of preparation uncertainty, i.e., for any quantum system, the amount of visibility for two general noncommuting unitary operators is nontrivially upper bounded.

Stronger sum uncertainty relations for non-Hermitian operators

Xiao-Feng Song, Yi-Fang Ren, Shuang Liu +2 more

The uncertainty relations (URs) of two arbitrary Hermitian and non-Hermitian incompatible operators represented by the product of variances have been confirmed theoretically and experimentally in various physical systems. However, the lower bound of the product uncertainty inequality can be null even for two noncommuting operators, i.e., a trivial case. Therefore, for two incompatible operators over the measured system state, the associated URs regarding the sum of variances are valid in a state-dependent manner, and the lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial. Although the sum URs formulated for Hermitian and unitary operators have been affirmed, the general forms for arbitrary non-Hermitian operators have not yet been investigated. This study presents the sum URs for non-Hermitian operators acting on system states using an appropriate Hilbert-space metric. The compatible forms of our sum inequalities with the conventional quantum mechanics are also provided via the $G$-metric formalism. Concrete examples illustrate the validity of the proposed sum URs in both $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. The developed methods and results can help give an in-depth understanding of the usefulness of $G$-metric formalism in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and the sum URs of incompatible operators within.

Experimental investigation of the stronger uncertainty relations for all incompatible observables

Kunkun Wang, Xiang Zhan, Zhihao Bian +3 more

The Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation quantitatively expresses the impossibility of jointly sharp preparation of incompatible observables. However, it does not capture the concept of incompatible observables because it can be trivial even for two incompatible observables. We experimentally demonstrate that the new stronger uncertainty relations proposed by Maccone and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 260401 (2014)] relating to the sum of variances are valid in a state-dependent manner and that the lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial when two observables are incompatible on the state of the system being measured. The behavior we find agrees with the predictions of quantum theory and obeys the new uncertainty relations even for the special states which trivialize the Heisenberg-Robertson relation. We realize a direct measurement model and perform an experimental investigation of the strengthened relations.
