Measuring atomic oscillator strengths by single atom spectroscopy

Jianwei Lee, Syed Abdullah Aljunid, Meng Khoon Tey +3 more

We propose a method for assessing the oscillator strengths of atomic transitions based on single atom spectroscopy. The method is based on a direct measurement of an AC Stark shift of atomic energy levels for the single atom trapped in an optical tweezer. The method is independent on a knowledge of the trapping field at the atom. The results can be applied to obtaining the previously unknown oscillator strengths for dipole transitions involving the first excited state of alkali metals.

Phase-conjugated mirror-induced oscillations outside the rotating-wave approximation

Saad S. M. Hassan, O. M. Frege

Dynamical behaviour of a single harmonic oscillator (HO) and of a single and two cooperative atoms in front of a phase-conjugated mirror is investigated without using the rotating-wave approximation. The mean photon number of the HO shows transient oscillation of frequency (2?0) and O(?/?0), the ratio of the free-space decay rate to the oscillation frequency, and the fluorescent spectrum becomes asymmetric due to additional resonant and non-resonant dispersive terms. In the single-two-level-atom case, the mean atomic inversion and the fluorescent intensity show steady oscillation O(?0/?0), the ratio of the A-coefficient to the atomic transition frequency. The amplitude of this steady oscillation at frequency (2?0) is larger in the case of two cooperative atoms.

Vacuum-field Rabi oscillations of atoms in a cavity

G. S. Agarwal

The quantum electrodynamics of an atom in a cavity is reexamined from the view point of the vacuum-field Rabi oscillations. Many features of such oscillations in a single atom as well as in a cooperative system are discussed. Various physical quantities that carry the signature of these vacuum-field oscillations are calculated. Even oscillator systems are shown to exhibit such vacuum-field Rabi oscillations, which is in contrast to the external-field-induced Rabi oscillations. Such oscillations are found to occur in situations involving both single-photon and multiphoton transitions.
