Abstract

We demonstrate an efficient and inherently ultra-low noise frequency upconverter, suitable for hybrid quantum systems. We employed a transition edge sensor and implemented a dark count reduction algorithm to accurately measure this unprecedentedly low count rate.

Coherent quantum frequency bridge: phase preserving, nearly noiseless parametric frequency converter

Ivan A. Burenkov, Yu‐Hsiang Cheng, Tim O. Thomay +7 more

We characterize an efficient and nearly-noiseless parametric frequency upconverter. The ultra-low noise regime is reached by the wide spectral separation between the input and pump frequencies and the low pump frequency relative to the input photons. The background of only ≈100 photons per hour is demonstrated. We demonstrate phase preservation in a frequency upconversion process at the single-photon level. We summarize our efforts to measure this ultra-low noise level, and discuss both single-photon avalanche photodiode measurements and a photon-counting transition edge sensor (TES) measurements. To reach the required accuracy, we supplemented our TES with a dark count reduction algorithm. The preservation of the coherence was demonstrated by simultaneously upconverting the input of each arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer through high interference fringe contrast. We observe fringe visibilities of ≥0.97 with faint coherent input.

Quantum frequency bridge: high-accuracy characterization of a nearly-noiseless parametric frequency converter

Ivan A. Burenkov, Thomas Gerrits, Adriana E. Lita +3 more

We demonstrate an efficient and inherently ultra-low noise frequency conversion via a parametric sum frequency generation. Due to the wide separation between the input and pump frequencies and the low pump frequency relative to the input photons, the upconversion results in only ≈100 background photons per hour. To measure such a low rate, we introduced a dark count reduction algorithm for an optical transition edge sensor.

Efficient mid-infrared single-photon frequency upconversion detection with ultra-low background counts

Xiaorong Gu, Kun Huang, Haifeng Pan +2 more

We demonstrate an efficient mid-infrared single-photon detection system with ultra-low background counts based on the frequency upconversion detection technique. The signal photons of 3.39 μm came from a He–Ne laser and the pump beam was provided by a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Taking into account the pulsed pumping and continuous-wave signaling scheme, the peak conversion efficiency of 64% was achieved at an average pump power of 28.3 mW. The corresponding detection efficiency was inferred to be 6.1% with ultra-low background counts of 400 s −1 .

Efficient single-photon frequency upconversion at 1.06 μm with ultralow background counts

Huafang Dong, Haifeng Pan, Yao Li +2 more

We demonstrated an efficient single-photon frequency upconversion system for the infrared photons at 1.06 μm with ultralow background counts. By pumping the system at a longer wavelength than that of the single-photon signal, the background counts caused by the pump-induced parametric fluorescence in the nonlinear crystal were reduced markedly. We achieved so far the lowest noise of ∼150/s for a near unity conversion efficiency.
