Universal ( 1+2 )-body bound states in planar atomic waveguides

Ludovic Pricoupenko, P. Pedri

Shallow heteronuclear trimers are predicted for mixtures of two atomic species strongly trapped in a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) atomic waveguide. The binding energies are functions of the 2D scattering length and of the mass ratio and can be thus tuned by various ways. These universal trimers are composed of two identical noninteracting particles and of a third particle of the other species. Depending on the statistics of the two identical particles, the trimers have an odd (fermions) or even (bosons) internal angular momentum. These results permit one to draw conclusions on the stability issue for the quasi-2D gaseous phase of heteronuclear dimers.

Trimer formation in ultracold gases of bosonic and fermionic molecules

Bout Marcelis, Dmitry S. Petrov, S. J. J. M. F. Kokkelmans +1 more

We consider weakly bound bosonic and fermionic heteronuclear molecules (dimers) in ultracold atomic gases, where the interspecies interaction is characterized by a large positive scattering length. We develop a new theoretical approach to solve the four-body scattering problem, which is valid when the mass ratio between the constituent atoms is sufficiently large. This approach is then used to study elastic and inelastic dimer- dimer scattering processes in the case that the light constituent atoms are fermions, while the heavy atoms can be either fermions or bosons. Due to the Fermi statistics of the light atoms, the heavy atoms experience a strong repulsion at large intermolecular distances. This leads to suppression of the collisional relaxation to universal trimer (Efimov) states and/or deeply bound molecular states. We present the formation rate of Efimov trimers as a function of the three-body parameter for several experimentally interesting systems. The competition between the formation of trimers and relaxation to deeply bound molecules is analyzed, and prospects for future studies of these systems are discussed.

Few-boson system with a single impurity: Universal bound states tied to Efimov trimers

D. Blume

Small weakly bound droplets determine a number of properties of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. For example, Efimov trimers near the atom-atom-atom and atom-dimer thresholds lead to enhanced losses from bosonic clouds. Generalizations to four- and higher-body systems have also been considered. Moreover, Efimov trimers have been predicted to play a role in the Bose polaron with large boson-impurity scattering length. Motivated by these considerations, the present work provides a detailed theoretical analysis of weakly bound $N$-body clusters consisting of $N\ensuremath{-}1$ identical bosons (denoted by ``B'') of mass $m$ that interact with a single distinguishable impurity particle (denoted by ``X'') of mass $M$. The system properties are analyzed as a function of the mass ratio $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ (values from $\ensuremath{\kappa}=1$ to 50 are considered), where $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ is equal to $m/M$, and the two-body $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{\text{BX}}$ between the bosons and the impurity. To reach the universal Efimov regime in which the size of the BBX trimer as well as those of larger clusters is much larger than the length scales of the underlying interaction model, three different approaches are considered: resonance states are determined in the absence of BB and BBX interactions, bound states are determined in the presence of repulsive three-body boson-boson-impurity interactions, and bound states are determined in the presence of repulsive two-body boson-boson interactions. The universal regime, in which the details of the underlying interaction model become irrelevant, is identified.
