Abstract

Abstract We investigate the properties of gap solitons in spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in mixed linear–nonlinear optical lattices. The mixed linear–nonlinear optical lattices can support parity-time (PT)-symmetric soliton solutions, and these PT-symmetric solitons can stably exist in the semi-infinite gap of linear optical lattices. The PT-symmetric gap-stripe solitons are found by increasing the strength of the spin–orbit coupling. It is found that the amplitude of the nonlinear optical lattices can significantly affect the stability of these gap and gap-stripe solitons. With an increase of the amplitude of the nonlinear optical lattices, the stable domains of the gap and gap-stripe solitons are shrunk. The unstable solitons can show unique evolution characteristics and the stability analyses are also confirmed by the evolution simulations.

Gap solitons of spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in PT periodic potential

S Wang, Y. H. Liu, T.F. Xu

We numerically investigate the gap solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in the parity–time ( P T )-symmetric periodic potential. We find that the depths and periods of the imaginary lattice have an important influence on the shape and stability of these single-peak gap solitons and double-peak gap solitons in the first band gap. The dynamics of these gap solitons are checked by the split-time-step Crank–Nicolson method. It is proved that the depths of the imaginary part of the P T -symmetric periodic potential gradually increase, and the gap solitons become unstable. But the different periods of imaginary part hardly affect the stability of the gap solitons in the corresponding parameter interval.

Vector gap solitons of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in square optical lattice

Qingqing Wang, Pu Tu, Jin-Ping Ma +5 more

Abstract Vector gap solitons in quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate loaded in a square optical lattice with spin-orbit and Rabi coupling are investigated theoretically. The solitons are obtained by the Newton-Conjugate-Gradient method for various physical parameters. The stability properties of gap solitons are theoretically analyzed by direct nonlinear dynamical evolution. It is found that the existence of gap solitons is sensitive to the spin-orbit and Rabi coupling strength. Smaller Rabi coupling strength is beneficial for the excitation of solitons in the semi-infinite gap. Conversely, larger Rabi coupling strength is beneficial for the soliton excitation in the first gap. The dynamical stability of these gap solitons depends on the spin-orbit and Rabi coupling strength, and the location of the soliton in the bandgap. These findings may contribute to understanding the topological excitations in condensed matter systems.

Vector gap solitons of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in honeycomb optical lattices

Hongjuan Meng, Jing Wang, Xiaobei Fan +5 more

The combination of the two hot topics of spin-orbit coupling and honeycomb lattices leads to the appearance of fascinating issues. In this paper, we investigate the existence and stability of vector gap solitons of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in honeycomb optical lattices. The existence and stability of vector gap solitons are highly sensitive to the properties of interspin and intraspin atomic interaction. We numerically obtain the parametric dependence of the existence of vector gap solitons both in the semi-infinite gap and in the first gap. Since only dynamically stable localized modes in nonlinear systems are likely to be generated and observed in experiments, we examine the stability of the vector gap solitons by using the direct evolution dynamics, and obtain the phase diagram of stable and unstable vector gap solitons on the parameter plane of interspin and intraspin atomic interactions.

Gap Solitons in a Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate

Yaroslav V. Kartashov, V. V. Konotop, F. Kh. Abdullaev

We report a diversity of stable gap solitons in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a spatially periodic Zeeman field. It is shown that the solitons can be classified by the main physical symmetries they obey, i.e., symmetries with respect to parity (P), time (T), and internal degree of freedom, i.e., spin (C), inversions. The conventional gap and gap-stripe solitons are obtained in lattices with different parameters. It is shown that solitons of the same type but obeying different symmetries can exist in the same lattice at different spatial locations. PT and CPT symmetric solitons have antiferromagnetic structure and are characterized, respectively, by nonzero and zero total magnetizations.

Gap solitons in quasi-1D Bose–Einstein condensate with three-body interactions under PT symmetry

Jin-Ping Ma, Qingqing Wang, Pu Tu +6 more

Abstract The existence and stability of gap solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate with three-body interactions loaded in a PT-symmetric potential are investigated numerically. Under the mean-field approximation, the dynamical behaviors of the system are described by a cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii equation. Firstly, we obtained the band-gap structures via linearizing the GPE. The PT-symmetric of the system will be broken if the magnitude of the imaginary part of the external potential exceeds a critical value. Secondly, various of gap solitons were found by the Newton-Conjugate-Gradient method. Finally, the stability properties of gap solitons were investigated through the linear stability analysis and the direct long-time nonlinear dynamical evolution. The results indicated that the stability of on-site and off-site solitons was remarkably influenced by three-body interactions. There exists unstable on-site gap solitons when the PT-symmetric potential is taken into account. Additionally, the magnitude of the imaginary part of the potential also affects the profile and stability of the gap solitons. When it increases, the symmetry of the solitons will be broken.

Matter-Wave Gap Solitons and Vortices in Three-Dimensional Parity-Time-Symmetric Optical Lattices

Jiawei Li, Yanpeng Zhang, Jianhua Zeng

Past decades have witnessed the emergence and increasing expansion of parity-time (PT )-symmetric systems in diverse physical fields and beyond as they license entirely all-real spectra, although being non-Hermitian. Nonlinear waves in low-dimensional PT -symmetric non-Hermitian systems have recently been explored broadly, whose understanding in higher dimensions remains abstruse and has yet to be revealed. We survey, theoretically and numerically, matter-wave nonlinear gap modes of Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interparticle interactions in three-dimensional PT optical lattices with emphasis on multidimensional gap solitons and vortices. Relying on direct perturbed simulations, we address the stability and instability areas of both localized modes in the underlying linearband gap spectra. Our study provides deep and consistent understandings of the formation, structural property, and dynamics of coherent localized matter waves supported by PT optical lattices in multidimensional space, opening a way for exploring and stabilizing three-dimensional localized gap modes in non-Hermitian systems.
