Off-resonant many-body quantum carpets in strongly tilted optical lattices

Manuel H. Muñoz-Arias, Javier Madroñero, Carlos A. Parra-Murillo

A unit filling Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian embedded in a strong Stark field is studied in the off-resonant regime inhibiting single- and many-particle first-order tunneling resonances. We investigate the occurrence of coherent dipole wavelike propagation along an optical lattice by means of an effective Hamiltonian accounting for second-order tunneling processes. It is shown that dipole wave function evolution in the short-time limit is ballistic and that finite-size effects induce dynamical self-interference patterns known as quantum carpets. We also present the effects of the border right after the first reflection, showing that the wave function diffuses normally with the variance changing linearly in time. This work extends the rich physical phenomenology of tilted one-dimensional lattice systems in a scenario of many interacting quantum particles, the so-called many-body Wannier-Stark system.

Bose-Einstein condensates on tilted lattices: Coherent, chaotic, and subdiffusive dynamics

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Edgar A. Gómez, Hans Jürgen Korsch

The dynamics of a (quasi-) one-dimensional interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice is studied in a discrete mean-field approximation, i.e., in terms of the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. If the static field is varied, the system shows a plethora of dynamical phenomena. In the strong field limit, we demonstrate the existence of (almost) nonspreading states which remain localized on the lattice region populated initially and show coherent Bloch oscillations with fractional revivals in the momentum space (so-called quantum carpets). With decreasing field, the dynamics becomes irregular, however, still confined in configuration space. For even weaker fields, we find subdiffusive dynamics with a wave-packet width growing as ${t}^{1/4}$.

Quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional tilted optical lattices

Andrey R. Kolovsky

We discuss the quantum phase transition between the Mott-insulator state and the density-wave state of cold Bose atoms in a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice as the lattice is adiabatically tilted along one of its primary axes. It is shown that a small misalignment of the tilt drastically changes the result of the adiabatic passage and, instead of the density-wave state, one obtains a disordered state. An intrinsic relation of the problem to Bloch oscillations of hard-core bosons in a 2D lattice is illuminated.
